Mormon Island State Recreation Area stands out as a unique campground due to its historical significance as a winter stopover for Mormon emigrants traveling westward, combined with its modern amenities that cater to campers and travelers along Interstate 80. Nestled within Nebraska's distinctive "Chain of Lakes," this area was the first to be developed, making it a popular destination for those seeking both comfort and adventure. Each spring, Mormon Island SRA becomes a spectacular site as it welcomes hundreds of thousands of sandhill cranes, which stop to rest and engage in their captivating courtship rituals. This location marks the eastern edge of the cranes' migration route, with their arrival beginning in early to mid-February and peaking around mid to late March. Visitors flock to witness these magnificent birds as they feed and perform colorful dances during the day. By early April, the cranes begin their journey to northern breeding grounds, typically leaving by mid-April. Additionally, a variety of geese, ducks, and other waterfowl can be spotted in the area before they continue their migration northward. For the best viewing opportunities, park personnel are available to provide guidance on timing and locations. Mormon Island SRA also offers a range of recreational activities, including fishing, non-powered boating, and electric motor boating.
