PRIMITIVE - HIKE IN CAMPSITE
About the campsite:
Camp Palustria is on the edge of a beautiful marsh within 75 feet of a trout stream. It is about 1000ft off of the Superior Hiking Trail. The campsite is primitive which includes fire pit with grill, table, and composting outhouse.
The site is about a 600ft hike from the road where you'll park. The first 400ft of the trail is a swamp with a simple elevated boardwalk through most of it. 95% of the time is it passable with hiking boats or street shoes, but there might be some muddy spots. Dispersed winter camping is also available.

Campsite is closed during hunting season.
About the property:
Trembling Gardens is my 10 acre swamp camp paradise in the rural suburb of Rice Lake. I am currently developing the land as a personal off-grid vacation home with a tent cabin under construction. The property is about 20 minutes away from downtown Duluth and Canal Park and has easy access to the North Shore.
“Oh the swamp is a mystical place all right. It's sacred. You think you're any different from me or your friends or this tree? If you listen hard enough, you can hear every living thing breathing together. You can feel everything growing. We're all living together, even if most folks don't act like it. We all have the same roots and we are all branches of the same tree. In the swamp, we see visions of people we've lost, people we loved, folks we think are gone. But the swamp tells us they're not. We're still connected to them. Time is an illusion and so is death.” -Avatar, The Last Airbender, Book Two: Earth, Chapter 4: The Swamp

Camp Palustria
Very quirky and remote site. Fun entering off side of road and walking on the boardwalks. Site super super private and well put together and maintained. Very unique way to stay in Duluth!

Camp Palustria
Poorly maintained
While the location of the campsite is fantastic, the site is in need of some maintenance. The foliage along the walk-in trail is very thick, the table at the campsite is missing a leg, the fire pit wasn't dug out, and the outhouse was in need of cleaning. I would not recommend this campsite given its current state.

Camp Palustria
Low key spot just outside of Duluth. We were in town for one night and decided to camp.
If you have mobility concerns this is not the camp for you, the hike to the spot is not long but the boardwalk is unstable at points. Good spot if you don’t mind a little work to make camp.

Camp Palustria
The site was very secluded. We did not realize we would be parking directly on the shoulder of the road which made us a bit nervous. The path was clear to find but a bit overgrown so a bit like bushwhacking and very wet when rainy.

Camp Palustria
Duluth camping… kinda
We did not enjoy our stay. It was sketchy, messy, and unorganized. We set up our tent and couldn’t start a fire with the soaked wood and ended up leaving due to the fact that our car was parked on the side of the road. We just did not feel safe. It was quite the story thought.
