Goldie is open for the summer! Goldie is an original early 1900's wooden caboose that ran on the DMIR railroad. She was re-designed in 1912 to be safer on the tracks (and her length extended so she wouldn't fall over). She ran the tracks of the Iron Range until retirement in 1968. She's been fully renovated with a few modern conveniences. We've re-used as much of the original wood as possible, and repurposed many things into other things so that we could keep the history alive. My husband is the carpenter that brought her to life and I'm the one that gave her some paint and design. Now, she's ready for people again, and to keep telling her story to others. Please...be our guest...and let Goldie be your host. The caboose sits about 50 yards from the house, but it tucked into the trees and feels very private. There is a private trail that leads from the caboose to the lake. Goldie has a max occupancy of 2 people due to space constraints. Please no pets since there are wooden floors. If you have a service dog, of course it is welcome - please reach out to me about that detail. She also offers: ~ 1 very generous bundle of firewood included with stay (extra may be purchased for $5) ~ Hot and cold running water ~ A shower ~A/C and heat ~Hot water kettle for coffee, tea and cocoa (or oatmeal, etc) ~Paper dishes, plastic utensils and ceramic mugs ~Microwave ~Mini fridge ~One queen sized memory foam bed ~ Bath Towels, hand towels and wash towels ~Flush Toilet ~Fire ring, picnic table and lake access (kayaks available to use for free) ~Wifi access ** There is no cable TV, but we have a DVD player and some movies to choose from. Also there are some games to play. We do have pets and they do run around the yard freely. There are two dogs that love to romp and say hi (a female Golden Retriever and a female Griffon mix) and a female cat that does the same. They are super friendly, but they will come to visit you at the lake. Our lake is an "environmental lake" so while we keep a small beach area that you are welcome to use, it is not free of lily pads or weeds. It's simple, but fully swimm-able (the Golden Retriever keeps the first 8 feet of water weed free with her swimming!). You are welcome to use the dock and chairs we keep there for breezy evenings or to take a dip to cool off. We are only 2i-sh miles from town with gas, food, ice cream, coffee shop, resaturants, small town shopping and a donut shop. There is a paved rail trail just down our street that runs both directions for many miles. Bikes are welcome! (please leave ATVs at home).2 night minimum stay so you can fully enjoy and appreciate the experience. No pets please unless they are documented service animals due to the hard wood floors. One firewood bundle is included in the price. Additional generous bundles are $5. This caboose experience is best suited for 1-2 adults due to space constraints. The caboose has:  Air conditioning, heat, hot and cold water, shower, flush toilet, dedicated parking, microwave, fridge, hot water kettle and toaster, TV with DVD player (no cable) and wifi access as well as a private fire ring with picnic table and private path down to the lake where you will find chairs and possibly a hammock. Bring your own beach towels if you'd like to dip in the lake. Goldie was born in 1905, remodeled by the DMIR (Duluth Missabe Iron Rail) in 1911, and had her last run on the tracks in 1968, but has since been brought back to life after many years of neglect. Her roof is metal so if it rains you are in for a treat! The sound is divine. Our house is on the property, but Goldie is out of sight, in the woods, giving her a great deal of privacy. She's about fifty yards from the main house. There is an entrance with stairs on the front side to get in, and more stairs on the back for private access to the fire ring. Motion lights will help you navigate the stairs, but only stay on a short time. Near the fire ring behind the caboose, there is a trail that runs alongside the marsh, down the length of our wooded property and pops out by the lake. And by the lake, there are Adirondack chairs, kayaks and a dock. The sunsets are gorgeous and the sun sends dappled light to the caboose as it goes down. Birds and frogs and loons will sing to you while you enjoy the evening air.

*Service Animals Are Welcome* We are very much pet lovers and have pets of our own. We have two medium sized dogs that are incredibly friendly. A silly Golden Reteiever and an even sillier Griffon mix. Also a funny cat. They will be out and about, since this is their home too, so we ask that you please let your pets play at your house.

Tap. The water from the sink and shower in the caboose is safe to drink. There is also a spigot on the outside near the fire ring that is also potable. Our water comes from a well.

Hot water , cold water only. There is a hot water shower inside the caboose. We have both hot and cold water so you can adjust the shower temp.

Recycling bin, trash bin. There are both trash and recycling bins inside the caboose.
Cooking equipment present
Grill over firepit, private, fridge, freezer, dishware, cutlery. Microwave, mini fridge with tiny freezer (good for ice cubes or popsicles), hot water kettle (for coffee, tea or hot chocolate), french press for coffee, toaster for breakfast and basic utensils (cutlery, glassware and mugs) are provided.

Peaceful Stay in a Cozy Caboose

Amy’s place was beautiful and peaceful. The caboose sits on a quiet, wooded part of the property and feels totally private — you can’t even see her house from it. There’s a private trail that leads down to the lake, passing a picnic table and a fire pit with a built-in grill. It’s a perfect spot to relax, cook out, or just sit and enjoy the view. The whole setup has a cozy, tucked-away vibe that makes it easy to unwind and enjoy nature.

The caboose was a unique experience to actually stay in a renovated railroad caboose with ties to the area. It was very relaxing setting and have campfire coffee and close access to the bike trails. The dogs were always happy to say hello and the yoga platform was a perfect place to watch the clear night sky.

Amazing!!! I can not help but say that a million times!!! ANY was very welcoming! The caboose it self breathtaking!! I recommended to at least 12 friends/family that first night!! Would be a romantic weekend getaway for anyone. The caboose has everything you need, it's very homie and comfortable!! I can not say enough how much we enjoyed our stay!!

This was our second time staying at Goldie, which made it even better because we knew how much fun we would have! It’s a perfect get away while still being close to restaurants and outdoor fun. The hosts are super attentive and so friendly. We will be back!

Always be prepared for slack action

Did you know that a caboose is a tiny house, but actually predates that whole idea? Goldie is a super cute, clever, functional and historically-minded redesign that makes for a perfect weekend away living quarters. Sit up by the high windows and see the treetops. Hike through the woods five minutes to Shallow Lake's clear waters and have a kayak ride. Build a fire in your private fire pit. Enjoy the prairie flowers. Nevis is 4 minutes away for anything you need. We got to Itasca State Park in less than half an hour for a day trip.

Amazing lil unique get away!
Goldie the Caboose in the Woods
This place was amazing, tranquil and just a magical experience all around! The hosts were fantastic! Their home is about 50 feet from the cabin, but you really don't feel like they are close at all! The cabin was perfectly clean with towels for use and paper cups and napkins in case one forgets theirs. The campfire is behind the cabin, so it feels very private! And private trail leading to the little beach is enchanting! There's lots of cool stuff to do, but we chose to just hang out and have a zen weekend and it was wonderful! The design that went into making this train into a cabin was so detailed and thoughtful! Amazing place! Will probably.come back next summer! I wanted a weekend away for just my husband and I, and I got exactly what I hoped for!

Goldie Stole our Hearts!

Goldie was the perfect pandemic plan! Amy helped us reschedule when a family event came up. The two of us were so enchanted by Goldie and the book on the inside table of all the renovations. Every detail was well thought out. We had a two night stay, where we had a charming campfire each night. Amy has a picnic table by the big fire pit and some long grill sticks so we roasted hot dogs with crescent rolls on them. We biked the heartland trail to Akeley - it is flat and easy to ride! We loved the overnight rain shower listening to the rain on Goldie’s roof. We rode the kayaks too! Great “Shallow Lake.” The AC in Goldie works great. We loved the hot water maker and French Press coffee. Had 2 bars of LTE for cell reception. And a nice hot shower! And friendly pups. We highly recommend this adventure.

We had an interesting stay at the caboose due to tornado warnings (yikes!) but Amy was wonderful and made us feel very safe. The caboose was adorable and we would happily stay there again.

Wonderful weekend getaway!
Goldie the Caboose in the Woods
My husband, two children (age 5 & 2) and I had a wonderful weekend at Goldie the Caboose. We were greeted by the owner and their sweet dog. Everything was set up and ready when we arrived. Every inch of the caboose has been so carefully restored. It is absolutely beautiful. My husband and I were in awe of the intelligent design and cozy feel. My kids loved sitting in the lofted seats and exploring every nook and cranny. The trail to the beach is a lovely wooded walk. The water is so clear and has a nice sandy bottom. We all enjoyed a little kayak ride and splashing on the shore. We set up 2 cots for the kids. It is a tight fit, but definitely doable at their age. It was very warm when we were there, so we were thankful for the A/C. Goldie has everything you need for a simple comfortable weekend away. We were all sad to leave, and are looking forward to a return visit.

Amy the host was very nice She does have problems with gps so you need to get ahold of her to find it I told her she needs a sign that say like Goldie the caboose this way But other than that is was beautiful, fun, nice, she let us use her kayaks for free so that was awesome. Another thing I could suggest is a wash sink outside The sink in the caboose is very tiny

Goldie the caboose is a wonderful find. Everything you want in camping plus your own shower and toilet in a delightful caboose version of a little house. Location is great: easy access to trails and lakes. Amy is an awesome host, and Goldie has been beautifully restored. We recommend the stay as much to appreciate the caboose as to enjoy the campfire.

A Peace of Time
Goldie the Caboose in the Woods
This was my first stay in a caboose and it was unforgettable! The restoration of this gem was interesting to hear about and my stay was fabulously relaxing! Whether sitting by the fire and listening to the loons on the lake or sitting on the comfy bed in the caboose to read a book, it was very peaceful and quiet and full of nature! The hosts were excellent and furnished the caboose with historical pieces. They are knowledgeable about trails and parks in the area as Chris and Amy are avid outdoor people as well! I will definitely be back to stay longer than a night!

The Perfect Place!

I have stayed at many unique places while traveling over the years and this is my favorite hands down! Amy and Chris are wonderful hosts, making sure I had everything I needed before arriving. Check in was easy, and I loved ending every evening by the fire pit. Walking the trail to the lake each morning with coffee in hand is how I wish I could start every day! Their dogs are so precious and sweet, they make the perfect co-hosts:) The caboose is close to a couple of state parks and trails so day trips to places were easy. I highly recommend staying here. It’s an experience you won’t regret and I can’t wait to come back!
