Welcome ; Located in southeast Minnesota's Driftless region of hills, valleys, fields and forests, we are a grass based working dairy farm with over 100 acres of woodland, including an extensive trail system and campsites in our wooded acres. What makes this woodland special is it's quiet, secluded setting and over 6 miles of hiking / skiing trails. Our farmstead sits three quarter of a mile off the paved county highway on our well maintained gravel driveway. Each of our campsites are secluded from the others with their own sawdust compost toilets, picnic tables, fireplaces, and firewood. Two of our sites require 4WD with a minimum of 6 inches ground clearance to access, and two are accessible with 2WD. If you do not have 4WD we can help transport your gear while you enjoy the walk in. There are plenty of woodland birds, deer, turkeys, raccoons and squirrels sharing the woods with you. At night it is common for owls to visit the campsite area to say hello, and coyotes talking in the distance. The winding trails through 100 acres of woodland offer a variety of woodland habitats, from Old growth Maple to mixed hardwood, to dense brush, to the edges of open pastureland. Bring your fat bike or mountain bike for an enjoyable ride. For winter users there is a mix of easy, moderate, and challenging winter cross country skiing or snowshoeing / hiking on the property. However the Rock Bottom Cabin is our only heated and insulated site and is available for winter booking. Winter access is walk in only with snow on the ground or in the forecast. We can help transport gear. This property is part of a working pasture-based dairy farm and guided tours of the dairy and cattle are available when scheduling allows. Children 12 and younger are free at our campsites. No need to be counted as guests , but please let us know when requesting to book. We do not allow non-booked visitors to our campsites due to the secluded, remote location, and accessibility.

Pitch your tent or park your small to medium sized motorhome or camper trailer at a secluded site at the edge of a woodland, next to green pastures. The site is a short drive on a primitive, bumpy, road through pastureland from our farmstead. The Round Mound campsite is 3 miles from the nearest Interstate 90 exit. NOTE: We do have a parking spot near our buildings with electricity - 30/50 amp RV hookup - space for larger RV's. This would be for highway travelers with self contained RV's, looking for an overnight spot to stay at. This is available as part of the Round Mound listing as an option. Please message us for details. This RV electric hookup can be used for charging EV's, and is an easy hike from the remote Round Mound location. This site is accessible by 2WD vehicles and pull behind campers. Please message us if you have questions on size limits and access road conditions. There are plenty of woodland birds, deer, turkeys, raccoons and squirrels sharing the woods with you. ROCK BOTTOM CABIN

ROCK BOTTOM CABIN is a primitive sleeper cabin, (NO electricity, plumbing, or AC), in a hardwood forest setting. The Cabin is in a very secluded location. Vehicle access to the RBC requires 4WD with at least 6 inches of ground clearance, OR, we will help transport you and your gear with a tractor or utility vehicle. Let us know your needs when you book with us, and we will help you with getting to the site. We will escort you to the site upon arrival and provide maps of our hiking trails. WINTER USE: Access to the site is walk in only with snow on the ground or in the forecast. We have sleds for gear or may be able to use a tractor if the snow is not too deep. The Rock Bottom Cabin is 10 ft. wide by 20 ft. long and sleeps four comfortably on either a full size futon, or an extra length full size bed, this bed can be split into two extra length single beds. If your family is larger than 6 please message us for exceptions to the listed capacity. There is room at the site for extra tents (please inquire). The cabin consists of two small semi rooms with a partition and curtain dividers on each end, and a small entry area that contains a wood stove, for winter heating, in the middle. The cabin is fully insulated and well ventilated. It has two large windows with insulated curtains in the sleeping rooms, as well as screened wall and eve vents. We provide drinking water in a thermos and wash water in a barrel. We also provide mattresses, sheets, and pillows, but please bring your own sleeping bags or blankets, and favorite pillow, to suit your needs. Guests also need to bring cooking / eating utensils. There is an outhouse on site with toilet paper, a picnic table, and a fireplace to cook on. Firewood is provided, no charge, donations accepted. Our rock Bottom Cabin campsite is ideal for those looking for a quiet woodland setting, with a few comforts. Please bring good flashlights with you for night time excursions to the outhouse. For winter users there is a mix of easy, moderate, and challenging winter cross country skiing or snowshoeing / hiking on the property. This property is part of a working pasture-based dairy farm. We do not allow non-booked visitors to our campsites due to the secluded, remote location, and accessibility.

COLD SEASON - Please consider our "ROCK BOTTOM CABIN" listing for winter camping.  Wooden Tent site is a primitive site, (NO electricity, plumbing, heat, or AC), in a secluded hardwood forest setting, 300-foot elevation drop from ridge top to valley campsite. Easy walk in / drive in ( 4 wheel drive )  trail access, plus five miles of woodland hiking trails on property, maps provided. The Wooden Tent campsite is accessible by four wheel drive vehicle - minimum clearance 6 inches,  - if the soils are not saturated. If guests do not arrive in a four wheel drive vehicle, we are able to help transport your gear to the site with a UTV while you enjoy the walk in, or a tractor and trailer if conditions are poor.  Let us know your needs when you book with us and we will do our best to help you with getting to the site. The  Wooden Tent sleeps 2 adults comfortably with plenty of room at campsite for additional tents as well, ( please inquire ). This campsite though close to highway access is very quiet and secluded.  The only artificial lights visible from the campsite are the occasional airplane and your own flashlights or lanterns ( strongly recommended because it is very dark in our woods at night). When the sky is clear, the  stars are fabulous.   Our Wooden Tent campsite is ideal for those looking for a quiet woodland setting, with a few comforts - a nice fireplace (with firewood), picnic table, outhouse, and solid shelter. We also provide a 3" - queen size mattress pad, on the floor of the Wooden Tent, and fresh drinking water in Thermos jugs. There are plenty of woodland birds, deer, turkeys, raccoons and squirrels sharing the woods with you. At night it is common for owls to visit the campsite area to say hello, and coyotes talking in the distance. The winding trails through 100 acres of woodland offer a variety of woodland habitats, from Old growth Maple to mixed hardwood, to dense brush, to the edges of open pastureland. Castaway on our Hilltop Queen - sleeper cabin. Salvaged from the depths of the Mississippi, we gutted this houseboat down to the bones and rebuilt it as a simple but cozy, primitive (NO electricity, plumbing, heat, AC), sleeper cabin. Enjoy the treetop view into our woodland from the canopied bow or from the upper fly deck ( complete with helm ). Inside, the primary cabin consists of a full size platform bed and a small loveseat which could be used as a small child's sleeper. There is also a second indoor level set up as a dinette with a folding table and chairs, or can be used as a second sleep area with the folding full size mattress on the floor. This area has windows on three sides, two with screens, providing a dry eating space in the event of a rain shower. There is space at the site to accommodate a small tent as well.  The Hilltop queen has 12 volt solar powered lighting, but please bring good flashlights to navigate the rest of the campsite after dark. The site is a short drive on a primitive, bumpy, road through pastureland from our farmstead.  Our Hilltop Queen campsite is ideal for those looking for a quiet woodland setting, with a few comforts - a nice fireplace (with firewood), picnic table, outhouse, and solid shelter. We also provide the mattresses, sheets, and pillows, but please bring your own sleeping bags or blankets to suit your needs. We also provide fresh drinking water in Thermos jugs. A Magical Place

My boyfriend and I had the greatest time camping at Gilles. Everything was thoughtfully planned and organized by Mike and Joan. We stayed at the campsite and had a magical time enjoying the sounds of the owls and coyotes, looking up at the stars, cooking over an open fire, and enjoying the landscape. We could have talked to them both forever. Their story and personalities are interesting and fun. We’re already planning to go back, scheduling additional days to spend there to simply explore everything we can on their beautiful land. I have no doubt you’ll enjoy your stay and leave with a much-needed peace in your heart.

Mike and Joan's land was lovely. My campsite was completely private. The hosts were warm and hospitable. The many trails on their property were fun to explore and very well marked. This hip camp is a gem.

Unique camping in a boat!

HILLTOP QUEEN
We enjoyed camping at Mike & Joan's farm! The boat was such a unique camping experience. The kids LOVED pretending to drive the boat, and they loved having their own "cabin" at the front of the boat (a curtain separates it from the main bedroom). The site was extremely private, and lovely - so many birds! The mattress was comfortable, and the solar lights were great! There was plenty of water and firewood. We all enjoyed the hiking trails (but check for ticks! They were abundant!), and the riddles and fun destinations kept the kids motivated - they loved the natural playground! The only downside - I think we may have been the first guests this spring, and the boat was quite full of dust and dead bugs, and had a pretty strong musty smell. Those who are sensitive to this may struggle.

We had a wonderful two-night stay on these very secluded and beautiful grounds. The cabin was cozy and had everything we needed for a peaceful getaway. Mike and Joan were amazing hosts—so warm and welcoming, and they truly went above and beyond to ensure our stay was perfect. One of the highlights for our family was getting to and from the cabin via UTV with a trailer—it added such a fun and memorable touch to our experience! The huge picnic table and neatly stacked firewood made campfires easy and enjoyable. It was the perfect escape for me, my husband, our 6-year-old son, and our dog. We all had an amazing time and can’t wait to come back!

Another great Mother's Day weekend at the Gillis Dairy Farm & Woodland. Trails were in great condition and communication with Mike/Joan worked great. Campsite was in great shape; the outhouse was clean, wood was stacked, and family left fully content.

Beautiful wooded area; picturesque views on the trails. Nature at its best—birds chirping and nighttime howling from afar, and no neighbors, just you and your family. — The Southwest area of Minnesota is filled with bluffs, rolling hills, fertile farm land and grazing cattle. The drive itself through this part of the state is worth seeing.

Mike and Joan's place is one of our most favorite spots to camp. We've come back for our second year and don't rule out coming again this year. The amenities they provide are an amazing bonus on top of an already wonderful place. We've stayed at the camp site but the cabins look great. The woods and the trail system are unbelievably good too - it could be a state park.

Love the wood stove and outdoor cooking firepit! Mike was AMAZING! The cows and dogs were super cute. The trails were beautiful and very hilly! Honestly they're very private sites also! Bed was comfy, deck was perfect - I enjoyed watching the bird feeder. Really a super great energy here. Would definitely go back!

ROCK BOTTOM CABIN
Rock Bottom Cabin exceeded our expectations in every way. If you don’t like long reviews, then just go ahead and book it - you’ll love it. We were bummed to only be able to stay one night but plan on returning. It’s hard to know where to even begin! Firstly, communication with Mike, our host was excellent. He shared a thorough message of what to except upon arrival, clear directions. When we arrived to his property, we were greeted by many curious cows and then he promptly greeted us on his tractor. With 2-4 inches of snow in the forecast, Mike suggested he give us a ride down to the cabin, rather than us driving our RAV4. We felt confident, but he wanted us to be safe and ultimately glad he offered us the ride. Bonus for a fun tractor ride sitting in the bucket up front. The site is situated on a flat clearing in the woods, surrounded by large oaks and maples, very peaceful. He walked us through the cabin, its amenities, directions on the wood stove and highlighting hiking trails on the paper map he printed for us. From then we were left alone, enjoying the miles of trails around the site. We hiked for about 2.5 hours until sundown and 2 hours in the morning and were able to cover a decent amount of the trails. The hikes were beautiful and all offered their own experiences, views, etc. The cabin was extremely clean, very well constructed and comfortable. We’ve stayed in similar cabins that have bugs or rodents or air gaps but this is built very nicely - not even draft

ROCK BOTTOM CABIN
We loved our stay at Rock Bottom Cabin! You are tucked down into the valley and surrounded by hillsides full of trees. We loved the fire pit with stacked grates for cooking. Waking up with the glass doors in front of you in this beautiful and secluded place felt truly special. There were so many well thought out little details. The 5 miles of well maintained trails throughout the property is such a plus. We also appreciated the good communication and helpful tips. There is no doubt we will be back!

A great site with abundant well hiking trails. Baik was a great host – give us a great briefing. We arrived at the campsite and even helped us move some of our gear to our remote location. Really appreciate any provided a couple of coolers, otable water and plenty of firewood. My daughters and I thank you for a great weekend.

My friends and I stayed a couple of days at Round Mound and what a beautiful site. Mike and Joan were great! They communicated with me every step of the way. The campsite was glorious. They really put a lot of work and love in to that place and it shows. The trails on the property were beautiful, especially in October. Water, firewood, two fire areas, a fantastic outhouse and a beautiful shaded tent pad. Without a doubt a perfect campsite! I hope to be back soon. I would highly recommend staying at Round Mound.

We loved camping at the Round Mound! It's so private, even though there were other campers on the farm we had no idea they were even there. It is a place of beauty and peace, the sunsets are beautiful and you are able to hear all the wildlife. We will be back!

Very neat spot. Lots of trails; great for hiking. Unique from the typical state park cabins/camping. Very private campsites. Also, Mike was very helpful and accommodating. Even spent more than an hour helping us look for our dogs that got away.

My favorite Hipcamp experience so far. Mike set us up with everything we needed for a great stay at the wooden tent. My dog loved exploring the trails. The drive to the wooden tent is steep, particularly the descent, but in our crossover with AWD it was fine. Thanks for a great stay, Mike and Joan!!

This was our fourth year in a row visiting the Gilles family farm. It is now a tradition we look forward to every year. The rest of the year is spent telling all our friends and family about this place. Finally, this year we took along two friends. To say they fell in love also is an understatement. It was so fun to experience our friends discovering just how special this place is. Mike and Joan take such good care of you. It's got everything you could need, to know they built this with their own hands, put so much care into providing the smallest details. Mike is always there to warmly greet us, and if you don't have a car that can make it down to the campsite he will drive you down in his tractor. Watch out, my friend drove his RAV4 and he did scrape his bottom quite a few times! Feel free to ride on the tractor if you don't want to worry. The cabin is also so well ventilated and stocked. There is always enough drinking water and water to wash hands/dishes. They also make sure you have plenty of firewood to cozy up and cook! What an amazing feeling to be able to disconnect and feel so private and isolated, but know that you are also in such a cared for and taken care of spot. I have a feeling that Mike and Joan do not do this just for the pocket money. They have put their souls into this place, and simply want to sprinkle a bit of joy into others' lives, and I have definitely benefitted from this over the years! Thank you!!!

My wife and I thoroughly loved every second at the round mound site. We were spoiled with privacy and appreciated the bonus amenities provided like the nice outhouse, cleaning water, separate good drinking water, sink and table. Our experience on the land was similar to being at a park reserve except you have the entire park reserve to yourself! We only seen one other campsite occupied while hiking for a couple hours but didn’t even see them - nor did anyone see us. Absolutely amazing! We had dry campfire wood and cooked on the provided steel grates. So peaceful and Mike and Joan are happy and welcoming. Don’t see how any bad review is even possible. I am so grateful they’ve chosen to open their property to share with the lucky few that enter. Highly recommend this experience. Please note I look for opportunities to camp self-sufficiently. The round mound campsite exceeded my expectations and hope to get back to that special place.

The care and connection that Mike and Joan have to this land is apparent. It’s so generous of them to share these beautiful woods and land. We had a sweet overnight at Rock Bottom Cabin. 2 adults and 2 kids. We were grateful for the tractor trailer ride down to the cabin. We saw so many lightning bugs which are a good indicator of a healthy ecosystem! Super quiet all night. It was pretty warm in the cabin, but having all the vents open helped some with that. Mike and Joan have worked out so many details! Everything was super clean and fresh. There was a well stocked wood shed, drinking and washing water. In the morning we went on a beautiful hike on the well maintained and labeled trails. We definitely hope to visit again soon and would love to stay longer! The cows at their grass based dairy look so beautiful and healthy! Thanks Mike and Joan for being such great stewards of the land and hosts!

WOODEN TENT IN THE WOODS
This was the best site of our road trip!!! We had been rained out the previous nights and found this site and it was more than we could have asked for. The host is very nice and accommodating! the space was clean and so fun to hang around in. We went for a hike around the property and it was beautiful, this place is more than just a place to stay you can easily spend a whole day here! Literally the best outhouse I have aver been in :)

Great stay, easy fast camping

HILLTOP QUEEN
What a beautiful area, private, well kept and nice hiking trails + it's close to a few city centres so if you want to get out for food or to see the river - it's just a short trip. There are riddles and things to look out for to solve while hiking which was fun for kids and adults alike. The hilltop queen made for luxurious sleep, much easier for the kids to enjoy their time and organize activities. The solar lighting made it easier to enjoy evenings even later. The outhouse is a total winner, way better than the hole in the ground you usually get + it's got lights for late night visits. Trash cans, firewood and water provided to drink and clean, it really doesn't get much easier to camp. If you have some of your family that struggles to make it more than a day camping, the hill top queen will be a game changer for them. Mike and Joan where a pleasure and very available if anything came up. We were not sure what we would be in for camping here, but definitely glad we made the choice and you will be too. We are looking to make this a yearly event.

ROCK BOTTOM CABIN
We had a nice quick overnight. The hosts are very hospitable. Area was spacious and private. Cabin was perfect for a night. Lovely trails and playground for what we were able to explore in one day.
