In January 1851, a unique gathering of farmers came together to establish the Hillsdale County Agricultural Society, aiming to create a platform for showcasing their agricultural achievements. This initiative was designed to foster knowledge sharing among local farmers, allowing them to learn from one another's practices and enhance their farming techniques. The inaugural Hillsdale County Fair took place on October 15-16, 1851, in the Courthouse Square of Hillsdale. The event featured a diverse array of entries, including various livestock such as oxen, beef cattle, sheep, swine, horses, and poultry, alongside an impressive selection of crops, clothing, rugs, quilts, and blankets. The following year, excitement grew as farmers prepared for the next fair, which saw entries double in number and was hosted in Jonesville. The fair's location alternated between the villages of Jonesville and Hillsdale until 1860, when a permanent site was established for this cherished community event. This rich history not only highlights the agricultural heritage of Hillsdale County but also underscores the importance of community collaboration in advancing farming practices. The fair continues to be a significant event, celebrating local agriculture and fostering connections among farmers and residents alike.
