This farm is a typical 19th century homestead, first established in 1820 during the golden days of this coastal fishing and farming community. The farm is perched up on a set of glacially smoothened plateaus growing with the most magical hay-grasses and wildflowers, on one of the many peninsular fingers pointing out into Cobscook Bay– looking eastwards to the protected estuarine Pennamaquan River. Most of the farm is a protected forest of spruce, balsam fir, larch, maple, birch, with patches of oaks and elms and some queenly White pines that escaped the epoch of lumber-cutting. On a chart you’ll see that Pembroke is the heart of Cobscook Bay. Leighton Point adjoins a sheltered cove equidistant between Eastport and Lubec, two cities/towns built on the sardine and lumber trades, with a good legacy of naval warfare and smuggling– just to the south of the Canadian border line, which cuts like a zigzag across the bay– Franklin Roosevelt wanted to put in a massive tidal power installation here, but he didn’t. So you’ll be happy to get out and watch the whales, seals, porpoises and puffins– not to mention the whirlpools.

Highly Recommend!
I had a wonderful stay at Smithereen Farm Platforms! I was kindly welcomed upon arrival, given a brief overview of the property, and had the option to choose which platform to stay at. The platforms are tucked in along the treeline allowing views of the farm while also providing privacy. I would highly recommend booking a stay with Smithereen Farm!

We want your money, not you.
Property is lovely, but a subpar experience. You only learn after booking and paying that the communal kitchen advertised in the listing is closed “due to COVID,” that the outdoor shower isn’t actually closed off so “you should shower in a swimsuit or clothes,” that you have to pee under a tree, and the sauna is not set up for use. This should all be clear prior to booking in the listing. The host is not particularly welcoming given the confusion and unclear status around everything-upon asking if we could use the kitchen, we were told “well no. But you can cook here. But you can’t. But you can.” Insert blank stare. We don’t want to socialize, we want to understand the disconnect between what we were sold and what is the actual situation. Furthermore, the fire pits by the sites are tiny and overgrown, so also not usable for cooking. We ended up with a case of food poisoning after trying. There’s no picnic table or place to prepare food or eat at the sites, with the kitchen closed. Sites are distant and super buggy. This feels very much like the owners like the idea of someone paying to camp on their land, without actually having to assist in even the most minimal fashion. I would recommend you go to the state park campground- cheaper, bathrooms, and clarity around boundaries.

Truly love this place. We stayed at Severine’s land in August 2020 and knew we had to come back again. This past August we spent four days in Baxter State Park then drove across the state to Severine’s land. We set up camp at tent site 3. Very secluded with a great view of the sky. Excellent stars. We visited Riverside Takeout in Machias. These guys are lovely and make great food! Highly recommend it. We did the cutler hike, reversing falls, a few farmers markets, Lubec and the cove walk at Severine’s. Can’t wait to come back and do it all over again !

A Far Flung Seaside Haven
We loved the scene at Smithereen Farms, the community centered folks there are doing great work in this farflung locale! The hilltop tent platforms are nicely set under the protection of spruce forest but fairly easy to access from parking area. It's true the little black dog is intense but definitely adds some spark to the introduction and seems used to lots of folks coming n' going. The view of the ocean and walk down to the tidal flats does not disappoint! I do recommend taking time to read the 13-page document that they send after confirming the booking(it's true the farmers/hosts don't really want to chit-chat for very long). This handy guide is full of so much thorough information and would be extremely helpful to orientate oneself in the area. Unfortunately, we received it once we were already on our road trip so I did not have a chance to go over it and was kinda clueless upon arrival...... That being said, they recommend showing up by 4pm if it's your first time(which we did not realize) and were in a bit of a rush to beat darkness setting up camp. The timber framed outdoor kitchen is super charming and the local sights as well as their farm store provide plenty to do while visiting Pembroke. Next time we intend to have at least 3 nights and a few days to fully explore much more of what is being offered at this sweet seaside haven. Thanks Severine and Terran for sharing your homeland with us! Azure from Vermont

Had a beautiful time camping on Severine's land. Enough privacy on the edge of the forest, but close to the farm (worth checking out any cool Greenhorns/Smithereen workshops that may be going on during your stay), and there is lovely access to the ocean for some sublime downeast cold swimming! Can't wait to return.

A little less friendly than we thought might be the case — especially since the farm is on a mission to support a good and sustainable alternative. While we were invited to be part of the communal dinner table, we did not feel especially welcome there. All in all, this is a very beautiful area, and we should all be supportive of the farm’s mission and vision.

Best Maine Camping Experience!
This was the most amazing camping experience! Outdoor amenities, beautiful views, and surprisingly not too many mosquitoes where we were (platforms) One suggestion, we were very confused by the map when we pulled in not realizing it was the entire area and not specifically the farm. A smaller map of just the farm area and where everything is would be helpful! Thanks for a great time, we’ll be back!!!

Wonderful Spot to Wander
Wonderful for wonder and wandering. The trip began before I even arrived with a thoughtful guidebook of recommendations for towns to stop in along the way. When to Go: Any time is great but Greenhorns hosts a series of events in Pembroke from foraging to yurt building and I’d highly recommend planning your trip around one of those events. Before Arriving: Load up on goods from local farmers markets and local shops/farm stands along the way. This part of Maine doesn’t offer much in terms of dining options so picking things up ahead of time is a good idea. You also may have the option of purchasing some of Smithereen Farm’s product which I’d recommend doing. The Hipcamp: 3 secluded platforms sheltered by trees. Wonderful kitchen to sit by and bird watch. A short trail to the cove. Groovy hosts. And a perfect spot to see what regenerative ag is all about. The Area: Put your phone down and wander around. Walk to reversing falls. Along the way you can look up for birds and look down for wild strawberries (if it’s the season) or whatever forage is in season (blueberries, mushrooms, kelp, etc). Bring a book. Bring a sketchpad. Do some doodling.

our stay at smithereen was a dream! severine, malcolm and evangeline were welcoming and kind and the campsites were gorgeous, clean, private. the farm is a sweet oasis - shoreline to visit on three sides, woods full of moss and chanterelles, towering sunflowers and even a chestnut tree with gorgeous spiky seed pods!! lots of new plant friends to meet as well as sheep, oxen and the shy gentle sea doggies. activities in the area are abundant, too many for a three day stay. DO NOT miss the reversing hall library. it is a true gem. thank you thank you we will return!

Lovely, but read reviews beforehand
As others have said, there are quirks that people should know before camping at the farm. It is a lovely place to stay, and we enjoyed our time there, but I'm glad I read the reviews to know what to expect! There was a lot of conflicting information between the hipcamp listing, the handbook that was provided, and the information I found on their website - what's available (COVID and otherwise), the layout, etc. The directions to parking were clear, but I saw no map of where any of the sites were (which was mentioned in the handbook). When I booked on hipcamp, it said it was the car camping site, #4. But when we arrived, we were told they don't use the number system anymore, someone with a camper already had the site, and we would have to hike in. It wasn't the end of the world (they have a cart available to haul everything), but it was quite warm and we had two young kids who were hungry and not interested in walking to find our new spot (which is why I booked the car camping spot in the first place). The walk-in sites have nice platforms, but there's not much more room than that. Plan to cook on the platform or find somewhere else to eat - we did one dinner at the beach at the end of the road, and another dinner at Reverse Falls! Composting toilet was great, and I appreciated having a sink with soap outside to wash hands! As long as you understand what to expect and know that this is a working farm/you'll be on your own, I highly recommend camping here. Maybe confirm things ahead of time - cell service is spotty and seeing someone to help when you get there isn't guaranteed (again, working farm).

Nice location, but expected more
I camped for two nights at Smithereen farm with a friend, and for the most part we had a very nice time and would recommend, although it does feel a little expensive for what you get. Smithereen did provide a comprehensive welcome packet, although we found a few things to note for future campers that might be worth including: The camp sites are pretty far from where you park, and there wasn’t always a cart available to carry our gear to/from the site. Eventually someone said we could drive down, which was very easy in our Rav4. It would have been nice if they’d mentioned that as an option, although I’m sure some cars might not be able to make it. If people are camping, a cart should always be available to them. Two of the three camping platforms were probably 12x12, the other was longer, maybe 16x12 which we needed for our larger tent. There aren’t any picnic tables (this wasn’t advertised, would just have been nice to have) and only one of the three had a stone ring for having a fire. More signage would be helpful - directing to the camp sites, potable water, and we read that there was an outdoor shower that we never saw. It really wasn’t clear where we were welcome to be – there’s an open-air kitchen and seating, and we felt like we weren’t supposed to be walking around there, even though that’s where the water was. Lastly, we didn’t find the staff to be very friendly. One of the guys helped us find our site once we flagged him down, and chatted a bit during the day, but for the most part the farm staff ignored us. If camping is going to be part of the farm’s business model, it would be nice if the staff was more pleasant towards the campers. We didn’t need a lot of help, but being welcoming and answering a few questions/asking if we were finding things okay would have been appreciated. The view on our last day out to the water was amazing, and the animals on the farm (some dogs, chickens, ducks) were cute. We did enjoy our stay, but for the money would have expected more.

Blueberry Land was lovely! We found the directions accurate, just follow the route to the address they give and the camp spot is just beyond that point. There were several spots in the field to choose from, and we weren't expecting the platforms, so they were a pleasant surprise. Would 100% come back here again!

peaceful, quiet and private...
This was my 2nd time staying on Blueberry Land. Love love love it. Plan to go back but I understand the location will soon be converted to a glamping sort of vibe. There are beautiful platforms that have been added to the field and those will be upgraded so expect rates to go up substantially. Which means I'll be looking elsewhere. But it is a 5 star location.

Blueberry Land Camping
Disappointing experience
Shocked by the positive reviews. This was a last minute booking (2 hours before arriving) and we were excited for the stay based on earlier reviews. We followed the step by step directions to the farm and were pointed to an overgrown field behind an older barn or the option of a knee high weedy field in front of the main home. Before we began to set up camp, the host visited us and let us know we were in the wrong place and we should head to a spot a couple of miles down the road. He went on to say that this happens with almost every hipcamp reservation, despite the fact that it’s the host site’s step by step directions we followed. We found the the next spot a few miles down the road and were incredibly disappointed. It was described as a blueberry field with fire rings at each site. What we found was yet another overgrown field, with bare black patches where someone else had burned a fire in the grass. There were overgrown piles of lumber under tarps, run down pads where someone may have setup a tent at one time and a general feeling that this property was not kept up with. The high grass wasn’t conducive for our trailer and there was no question this wasn’t where we wanted to spend the evening with our family. We immediately messaged the host letting him know we would not be staying due to the high grass and asked at that time about a refund. While the host did offer for us to come back to the original location (again, the initial spots were too overgrown) we declined and did not hear a response about a refund. We therefore reached out to hipcamp who said the host declined our refund. We’ve stayed at hipcamp properties all over the US and had already visited 4 others before this one on this trip alone. This was hands down the most disappointing property we have ever booked and were even more disappointed that the host was not understanding or willing to work with us, considering it was a last minute booking and the fact that only 1 other tent was on the property for the night (this was just before sundown). Maybe we visited on an off week but I cannot recommend this property.

Much more than a place to camp
This was our first Hipcamp experience and it set a very high bar. We stayed on the Blueberry Land in our truck camper but visited the farm. Before we had even gotten out, Lydia greeted us and asked the kids if they wanted a tour of the farm. Not only is the place gorgeous but we learned about mushroom farming, helped move the sheep to a new section and took a walk down to the private cove. 10 out of 10 We couldn’t leave without buying some jam and frozen berries.
