It’s chill! For the price it’s definitely worth it. You do get some fan noise from the farm next door thru the night but I sleep with a fan so I appreciated it. Dan is prompt and helpful throughout your stay!

Grass Campsite—Peaceful and Scenic

Dan’s campsite is hands down one of the best camping experiences we’ve ever had! From making the reservation to the moment we arrived, everything about our stay was seamless and stress-free. He stayed close in contact, responded immediately to any questions we had and offered thoughtful recommendations for places to explore nearby. His communication was top-notch and made us feel well taken care of! The site itself was immaculate, spacious, and surrounded by beautiful scenery that makes you instantly relax. Whether you’re pitching a tent or parking a camper, Dan has clearly put so much thought and care into creating a space that balances rustic charm with comfort, making it feel welcoming and accessible. We loved the firepit area and the fact that Dan offers a wheelbarrow of firewood that he cuts himself for just $10 via Venmo! It was such a great deal, super convenient to have right at our site, and it lasted us the entire two-night stay. There are also beautiful lakes and walking trails nearby, and Dan provided easy-to-follow instructions on how to access them. Bonus: his neighbors were just as friendly and kind, making sure we were all set and felt welcomed. What really sets this place apart is Dan himself. He’s responsive, clear with giving directions, and goes above and beyond to make sure guests have everything they need. We can tell he truly loves hosting and sharing his land—it shows in every detail! Truly a hidden gem! We can’t wait to return! Thank you, Dan! 😊

Lovely getaway with some noise

Campsite was the perfect size, nice and level for our tent. Good location. Having water and electricity at the site was much appreciated. Public toilets were easy to find and clean. We felt safe. Only downside was the intermittent noise from the farm buildings across the way, but it didn’t disturb our sleep.

No privacy

The camp was very clean and stocked with fire wood. We thought they had a leash law. We found out maybe they do???? Sophies spot is not private at all. The tent site next to us had noisy kids and adults. We put up with screaming kids for two days.Had it not been a holiday weekend we would have moved to a KOA. They have rules to prevent others from poor behavior. Leashes are important to protect everyone.

Pristine site

The site is pristine. It is great for car camping, which I did, and I'm sure would be great for tent camping. There are two gravel-covered levels (small gravel) separated by an ~2 foot slope with medium-sized rocks (a 4WD could traverse the slope). Tent stakes for my privacy shelter were easy to tap in, held well during medium winds, and were also easily removed manually (there is dirt under the gravel, which is good for holding stakes). The site is surrounded on three sides by woods and the fourth by an old road, but it is literally at the end of the road (so you don't have to worry about vehicular traffic). It is quite lush in the Spring with dense foliage, very quiet and you can see just one other campsite through the dense trees, but just barely (it is hundreds of feet away). The site is very private and I slept like a baby. Dan was responsive in messaging and rode by on his mountain bike late in the morning (clearly going somewhere) and slowed down to say hello and confirm everything was good: "Perfect", I responded, which it was. I'll be back!

Awesome campground with gorgeous trails, convenient hook ups and an “off the beaten path” ambiance. The road is narrow and the gravel is soft in spaces, so if you’re a heavy 2 wheel drive vehicle be spatially aware! There are no toilets as advertised (perhaps it is seasonal?) but you can walk up the trail a ways to the community center and use their bathrooms if needed. The lake is beautiful! I saw deer, beavers and lots of incredible birds just minutes away from the site.

Auburn Lake access and trails

I stayed at Sophia's Camp which was private, with water and electricity, and right next to trails around Lake Auburn and the surrounding fields. Water and electricity was readily available, my dogs and I enjoyed exploring the trails, Auburn Lake is beautiful, and the host, Dan, was helpful and accessible. I would definitely recommend staying at this campground and getting to know this wonderful area of Maine.

It is a GREAT location. I reserved Sophie’s site because it looked like the best true “ camping “ site for our needs. Apparently “upgraded “ to another site and was approached at 8 pm thinking they were in the wrong but it was me.. never realized we were “upgraded “. The incoming party was great about taking the “upgraded “ site. I would not have chosen the upgrade and wish there was a conversation regarding the change. There is a grow center abutting the property that has loud equipment that cycles off and on 24/7.. it tends to be annoying. The grounds are beautiful, lots of trails and exploring available. There is an extra fee for using electricity beyond what the owner feels is reasonable for the site fee, not disclosed when booking. Beautiful picnic table and fire pit. Can’t go wrong with Sophie’s site.💕

I had a great time staying here. The site is well put together, had plenty of space, and the surroundings are beautiful. I hiked some of the trails down by the lake and really enjoyed it. Would stay again if I'm back in the area!

Peaceful Camping in Auburn

We needed to have a stop between Acadia and NH for a day and Dan’s place was perfect for us. Very quiet and woodsy, we had a peaceful resting day. Dan was nice enough to place us at a full hookup site (1b) so we had more space. The walk down to the lake was also very nice (15 min walk down).

If you like privacy this is the place, on a beautiful well maintained property, basically a short walk from a huge lake. Dan the host went above and beyond to make us comfortable and acquainted with the area. We will definitely be coming back!!

Awesome site, host is great. Campsite very clean well maintained. Area hiking is nice and you can start right from camp. Stores and reasturants are near by but far enough not to hinder the camping experience. I would stay here again when in area. Thank you for a peaceful weekend.

We loved camping at Sophie’s site. It’s a beautiful, peaceful spot. Wonderful proximity to walking trails, great for our dogs! Dan is friendly and super communicative with quick response time when we asked him questions. His entire property is well maintained, easy to access and very comfortable. Dan is a wonderful host and his sites have everything you could need and more. We feel at home here more than we ever have at any RV campground or site. Although the site is in his driveway, Dan and his family make our privacy a priority. I highly recommend taking on the invitation to his outdoor “lounge” for good company over a beverage. We couldn’t be happier, thanks for having us, Dan!

When we first saw Dan's sites on Hipcamp, they looked too good to be true -- but holy moly they were even MORE AMAZING than the beautiful photos and shining reviews expressed! WE LOVED LOVED LOVED everything about our stay here at Dan's oasis on Lake Auburn! The sites are beautifully designed--incredibly private, easy to get in and out of and access hookups. Everything worked perfectly. And the walking trails right outside your door are fantastic -- our doggo will never forgive us for leaving. Dan is the perfect host -- tremendously helpful, generous, kind, and welcoming, while simultaneously extremely respectful of our space. We enjoyed our conversations with him tremendously. He's a true gem. The towns of Auburn and Lewiston are also fantastic -- full of beautiful parks and hikes, along with super convenient shopping. We just love this stay so much -- can't recommend it enough <3
