Happy Dwelling

On the way to this site, we had van trouble and could not make it to Happy Dwelling. We had to stop, get the van fixed and then headed home, curbing a four day road trip after two days. Since the promo material for this site promised our credit card would not be used until we checked in, we did not worry. I did not have my laptop so I couldn't contact the site host. Yesterday we got our bank statement and we were charged. Grrrrr.

Get down with Nature!

Site 4 & 5 are both secluded and private. We like site #5 better because our 16ft camper van could easily back up and turn around to exit. There was a trail near our site that was lined with pine trees that gave a fragrant smell through the air. Birds congregated in the trees with soft chatter and at night it was so peaceful. Due to the ban on camp fires here, we cannot add additional comments on what that might have felt like but since we have experienced camp fires before, this probably would have been perfect. We had rain/drizzle over night waking to wet grasses in the morning but the sun quickly popped out later on. Our host was extremely friendly and accomodating upon our arrival the first night and left us with a warm feeling of kindness for our adventures aheaad. If you like the outdoors, plan on a night or two in the woods. Cell coverage was decent (AT&T).

We just needed a place to drop our rig while we were backpacking the Cutler Coast. The two nights that we slept in our rig it was peaceful and our place was undisturbed. The owner made sure to get us a spot big enough to accommodate what we needed. Having a travel trailer instead of a tent. She had to make some arrangements. But she was willing to do it.

Instructions were good enough to find out way after sunset, and the sight was well-maintained, the tent location was out of direct light for a good portion of the morning allowing us to stay cool.

I would definitely pick site 5 next time to have more privacy. I would highly recommend having a small table of sorts at the sites. It would make it so much easier. Overall my stay was pleasant.

Convenient location for adventures

The location was great, and site 3 was open and level with low-cut grass with the communal fire pit in the center. One side of the woods line got AM sun and the other side got afternoon sun, but the campsite area itself was shaded the whole day. The other two sites (4 and 5 - we didn’t see markings for 1 and 2) were unoccupied, but looked like they wouldn’t have morning or afternoon sun as much as the communal area. The outhouse was very convenient, and Katherine was very responsive to my message that the toilet bucket was full. Thanks Katherine for providing a convenient spot for our trips to Jasper Beach and the Bold Coast trails!

Site 2 - Happy Dwelling Tent & RV

We stayed in a spacious clearing surrounded by trees. It was quiet, pleasant, and allowed us access to the area without any fussy extras. We would definitely stay again but would add a massage to the package!

For me the location worked well as I was meeting up with friends in the area for hiking and evening socializing. I situated in Site 2 as it was an easy in and out place, essentially an open meadow. If I was truly having a camping experience, aside was merely pitching a tent, then the more private woodsy sites would be better. I actually was offered the choice as I was the only camper during my time there.

The camp site was very private. The ground is level with grass/ vegetation over firmer ground/ gravel. You can drive into the sites.- not truly a road but grass covered gravel like surface. Dry even with a downpour. Not far outside East Machias so very convenient for the Downeast coast.

The site was simple just as advertised. A fire pit, outhouse and ground to lay your tent. We set up, went to town to eat and then enjoyed the fire pit that night.

Katherine greeted us upon arrival, and was friendly. Site 5 was located just past the first 4 sites and is very private, quiet and peaceful. We were disappointed in the fire pit, being it was rather small, made of a few rocks and sounded by dried grass and didn’t feel it was safe to start a fire.

We had a nice, quiet stay here! Booked very last-minute and Katherine responded quickly and was very helpful. Minimal extras but not a problem as we are self-contained. It was as great launching point for our visit to Cobscook Bay!

Katherine's land was perfect for our needs. Very quiet, well kept, and in a great location. She was very accommodating, especially since we were a bit early for camping season in Maine, and made us feel welcome from the start.

If you are looking for a private, quiet spot for a basecamp in northeastern Maine this is it. The site I chose (site 7) was a ways off the road and perfect to get some rest after exploring all day.

Katherine was an amazing host! Such an affordable rate for a great spot. I did indulge in a chair massage and loved every minute! She made me feel welcome and comfortable. We had fantastic conversations and I hope to see her again. A must stay!

Good base for exploring Down East

Nice, quiet property and good location for exploring Down East Maine. 15 Minute Drive to Machias which has supermarket, gas station, pharmacy, hardware store as well as as decent public wifi hotspot in the Machias Savings Bank HQ Parking Lot.
