Nestled just 5 miles south of Harlan, the Nishna Bend Recreation Area stands out as a unique destination for outdoor enthusiasts, offering a blend of recreational activities and natural beauty. This expansive 80-acre park features over 30 acres of wetlands, a result of past gravel mining operations, making it a haven for wildlife and a perfect spot for nature lovers. Visitors can enjoy a variety of amenities, including two cozy camping cabins and 24 modern campsites equipped with 50-amp electric hookups. The campground, which opened in 2007, has expanded to include 20 additional sites, all available for just $20 per night. A newly constructed shower house and restroom facility, opened in May 2009, enhances the camping experience. Fishing enthusiasts will delight in the five sandpit fishing ponds, which are home to bass, crappie, catfish, bluegill, and bullhead. River fishing is also available, providing ample opportunities for anglers of all skill levels. The park features scenic hiking trails, a nature learning center, and an arboretum, showcasing a diverse array of wildflowers and native grasses.
