Steve was an awesome host. After we got parked he explained some things he had to offer. I got lavender bunches, honey, and a book written by Steve himself. I teared up when he was explaining the true story of a princess he met at the age of 95, who has an incredible story… I am looking forward to reading it. We spent Halloween night here, without any scary stuff happening, and we lived to tell another story. Thanks Steve.

The Commons Oak Savannah is a beautiful property and was the perfect setting for our 1930's themed camp-out. The hilly 1/2 mile cow lane from the highway back to the campsite passes through fields and woodlands and lends a feeling of travelling to a distant place and time, and we had no problem negotiating it our 1928 Model A Ford. The site itself is surrounded by woods with ancient oaks to the north, east and south, and we enjoyed the magnificent sunset over the open fields to the west. Darkness brought the sounds of screech owls and even the distant yips and howls of coyotes. The site itself was large and well mowed, and we found an abundance of wood in the brush pile concealed in the tall grass next to the lane. Prospective campers may want to note that there is a small group of well-maintained honey bee hive boxes adjacent to the site, but they ignored us completely and did not even stray into our camp. The host, Steve, was very congenial, with excellent communication via both hipcamp messaging and phone texting, and his interest in helping us enjoy our experience was readily apparent. I heartily recommend The Commons Oak Savannah to campers seeking a tranquil and authentic experience and hope to return many times myself.

Steve was a great host. Great with communication. The property was very pretty. Had to cut down and process our own dead wood. The path to the wooded area is grass with very tall thick grass/plants in the center. If you have a vehicle with a nice (painted) front lower bumper, keep scratching in mind. I plan on staying again.

My son and I enjoyed our 2-day campout along with our dog. The site was quiet and very private. There were no other campsites nearby, a huge bonus. It was a bit overgrown when we arrived, but we were able to quickly clear an area for our tent and tarp. I’m sure we will try go back in the future. The location was convenient to my NW suburban home.

Had a quick overnight stay with my kids in the site closer to the farm. It was easy to access, well kept and adjacent to a large field with a beautiful sunset. Steve is a super nice host, and was very great with communication. We'll go stay again!

Poor experience; host was friendly and well meaning, but the 2 tent sites did not exist. Tall grass and weeds over hilly ground with holes that will break your ankle. Had to pitch my canvas tent in parking area. Gunfire from neighbors all day on Saturday. Grass road half mile long to sites was covered in branches, broken trees, and large wood splinters from a brush removal project. Cannot access site by car, only 4WD truck. If it rains hard or snows, you will be stuck a half mile from pavement without help. A 6 inch wood splinter (from the brush removal project) punctured my f-350 large tire and caused a flat that is not repairable. Have to buy a new $300 tire. Nice host but horrible camping experience for $45 per night. No fire pit or ash disposal area if running a wood stove in your tent. The Hipcamp listing did not match the experience I had. Maybe yours will be better…….

Lovely spot on the edge of the woods. It’s a short and pretty drive off of the main road to the spot. The sunset was beautiful as were the birds in the morning.

What a great spot to unwind. A nice peaceful spot behind the barns with big fire pit. It was great to see the sun go down and all the fireflies come out from the soy bean fields. Thank you for a cozy, quiet and safe place to reset my clock.

We had a great time camping on Steve's property. It is very secluded and beautiful out there. My daughter loved it. Not too far for us to travel so we will probably return in the future.

Lovely area! I stayed here with a friend and his kids just overnight in a tent. Steve greeted me and handed us some dried lavender (it smelled amazing), showed me to the site, and let us know that he would be around to answer any questions. We checked out at 11:59 the next day and he didn’t hassle us at all. The campsite was excellent, with plenty of firewood available. Will definitely be back!

We stayed here over Memorial Day weekend. We took a cow path off the road to the campsite. It was very secluded, but you can also drive right up to the site which is nice, especially with kids/a lot of stuff. This is not a campsite that has been used a lot (I think the site is new) so we had to walk on the grasses a bit to make our own walkways. It was nice that it provided more padding for sleeping, but definitely check for ticks! Some logs were provided, we needed to get quite a bit more from the woods for the duration of our time, but the brush piles made it decently easy.
Steve was a great host. He took the time to give us a tour of the whole property, including some of the history which was fun to learn. He is proud of his land and trying to do right by the native species, getting rid of the invasive ones, and restoring the glory of the beautiful oak tree savanna. Steve was easy to reach and had quick response time. We were able to use the animal trails on the property to explore a bit with Steve’s direction and permission. It was nice to have some space to adventure in with our kids instead of being confined to a small campsite. You will need to come prepared to pack out your own trash and dig your own poo holes which is always an adventure!
