The Boone County Fair, a cherished tradition since 1957, stands out as a vibrant celebration of agriculture and community spirit. County fairs have a storied history in the United States, dating back to 1841 when the first agricultural exhibitions were held in Syracuse, NY, and Naper Settlement, Illinois. These local fairs have historically promoted advancements in farming, featuring livestock judging, produce competitions, and displays of innovative agricultural tools and techniques. Various contests, including plowing competitions that evolved into today’s tractor pulls, have been a staple of these events. Harness racing, which gained popularity around 1875, continues to be a highlight at the Boone County Fair. The inaugural county fair in Belvidere took place in 1855 at Big Thunder Park. In 1867, the fair moved to its current location in Spencer Park, coinciding with the founding of the National Grange, the oldest agricultural organization in the United States.
