Set on 11 wooded acres along the scenic Rose Lake Byway, Black Lake Overlook Retreat offers breathtaking views, peaceful seclusion, and a perfect home base for exploring one of the Pacific Northwest's most beautiful outdoor destinations. Whether you're seeking adventure or simply a place to slow down, you'll find both here. Wake to birdsong and lake views, spend your days exploring North Idaho's forests, lakes, trails, and mountain towns, then return for colorful sunsets and evenings beneath a sky full of stars. Explore the Property While Black Lake Overlook Retreat spans 11 private acres, guests have access to thoughtfully designated areas designed for relaxation and exploration. A property map is provided upon arrival. Enjoy peaceful walks along the tree-lined private roadway, where ferns and seasonal thimbleberries grow beneath towering pines. Wander through the spacious campsite, relax in one of several seating areas, follow the private trail to the hammock overlooking the lake, or enjoy the picnic overlook perched above the property. As we continue developing the retreat, additional trails and guest access areas will be added over time. Discover North Idaho Black Lake Overlook Retreat is ideally located for experiencing the very best of North Idaho. Just minutes away, the Trail of the Coeur d'Alenes offers more than 70 miles of scenic paved biking through wetlands, forests, rivers, and lakes, with trail access near the north end of Black Lake. Launch your kayak from the public access on the north end of Black Lake and enjoy peaceful paddling surrounded by abundant wildlife. Great blue herons, flocks of American white pelicans, osprey, bald eagles, deer, and even the occasional moose are commonly seen throughout the area. A short drive brings you to Lake Coeur d'Alene, where you'll find world-class boating, fishing, swimming, waterfront dining, scenic cruises, and unforgettable sunsets. Spend the day exploring the nearby communities of Harrison and Conkling Park, both offering sandy public beaches, swimming areas, marinas, restaurants, parks, live summer music, and local shops. Start your morning with coffee overlooking the lake, spend the day biking the Trail of the Coeur d'Alenes, kayaking Black Lake, fishing, boating on Lake Coeur d'Alene, hiking, or exploring nearby mountain towns, then return for colorful sunsets and peaceful evenings around the pellet stove. Wildlife is part of the experience here. Great blue herons, flocks of American white pelicans, deer, osprey, eagles, and even the occasional moose are regularly spotted in the surrounding wetlands, forests, and along the lake. The Terrace is best suited for couples, solo travelers, and families with older children who are comfortable in a natural outdoor environment. The campsite sits on a bench above Black Lake with steep natural terrain along portions of the property. For safety, it is not recommended for young children or guests who have difficulty navigating uneven ground. The Terrace isn't luxury glamping—it's thoughtfully designed off-grid camping with a few extra comforts, incredible views, and the privacy to truly disconnect. A clean, professionally serviced portable restroom is located a short walk from camp in a private area out of sight. Please bring your own drinking water, as potable water is not currently available onsite. Unplug and Enjoy the Serenity

The Terrace | Private Off-Grid Bell Tent with Epic Lake Views

I camped out at this lovely site for two nights with my sons, and we enjoyed every minute! The simple-yet-elegant amenities, combined with the site's location and atmosphere, allow for a perfect balance of comfort and solitude. The convenience of a pre-assembled, family sized tent, cooking stations, and a wood pellet stove enabled us to set up quickly and allowed for minimal distractions in disconnecting from civilization and becoming immersed in nature. My sons particularly enjoyed the hiking trails carved out of the hillside and the our wonderful host's generous offer to explore their property. I particularly enjoyed the breathtaking, panoramic views of Black Lake and its surrounding verdant countryside, and the quiet serenity of nature far removed from anything urban. The hammock provided beneath the primary campsite was a great way to enjoy these sensory wonders in comfort. Another wonderful highlight was the majestic night sky, unfettered by any nearby light pollution, and the candlelit ambience of the low wattage solar powered lights fencing the site perimeter. Kara was a very gracious host, and she answered all my questions promptly and thoroughly. 10/10, would highly recommend. I plan on returning with my wife for a romantic getaway sometime soon!

A unique stay, peaceful & beautiful

The Terrace | Private Off-Grid Bell Tent with Epic Lake Views

We had such a memorable stay at Kara's Black Lake Overlook Retreat! So much work has gone into carving out this sweet camp spot on a terrace nestled into the side of the mountain with spectacular views. It was the perfect balance of conveniences (large tent you can stand up in, great three burner camp stove with fuel, super clean porta potty, tables and chairs, hammock) and simplicity (we like it to feel like camping, and that we are spending time in our natural surroundings!) which made our stay so peaceful and relaxing. It's not often that we get to slow down and be away from the distractions of every day life without a lot of planning and preparation involved. The set up there made it so easy for us to plan a last minute getaway. I've never seen such thorough and clear information about what to expect and what to explore when there. The owners have clearly poured their hearts into this project and we feel lucky to be one of the first to experience it. We enjoyed paddle on the lake and had it all to ourselves. We played cribbage, had epic star viewing and felt we discovered a hidden gem.

The Terrace | Private Off-Grid Bell Tent with Epic Lake Views

I want to start off this review by kindly disagreeing with the description of the property. In their welcome kit they describe The Terrace as "it isn’t luxury, and we don’t really want it to be. It’s intentionally simple". Much like beauty is in the eye of the beholder & so is what we see as luxurious. True - this isn't the Hilton of campgrounds but I found this to be one of the most well thought out sites we've stayed at. Not only are the hosts two of the kindest people, they really did carve out a little slice of heaven up here. The photos don't quite capture how peaceful & beautiful our stay was. Our chance to connect as a family was made possible because of The Terrace. It's cozy enough to keep everyone close but spacious enough for two queen mattresses to nestle into the tent & the abundance of seating options was a bonus. My only regret about this weekend is that we didn't stay two nights. I cannot wait to visit again & tell all our friends that we had the pleasure of being the first family campers at The Terrace. I highly recommend making your next family vacation or weekend date night to be at The Terrace. *** You & your family will LOVE camping here ***
