The Hamakua Guesthouse is located on the south end of Hawaii's breathtaking Hamakua Coast. Established in 2012 we are easily accessible to all the Big Island attractions such as Volcanoes National Park (1 hour South), Waipio Valley (1 hour North), and the countless sights and adventures along the Hamakua Coast, it is the perfect location to base your Big Island adventure vacation. The legendary Akaka Falls State Park is only 4 miles away from the Hamakua House. Onomea Bay is only 4 miles away, which is the home of the Hawaii Botanical Gardens. It is an unforgettable drive to get there and the bay is a wonderful place to have a picnic. We are only 1 mile (easily walkable) from the quaint main street of Honomu, HI. This town was established in the sugar cane plantation era and remains today boasting some wonderful gift shops, two restaurants, a coffee house, and the Island's best Zip Line Tours. Guests have access to our open air full bathroom with running water and a stunning rainfall shower (located at the main house). They also have access to our covered outdoor kitchen with grills, a sink, prep space, dining area, dishes, cups, silverware, and cookware (also located at the main house).

Mixed feelings with this stay, but leaning positive considering the affordable price. In short: this feels like a great idea with lots of effort, but the maintenance and execution fell a bit short. The good: the hammocks were comfortable and sturdy, we slept great. The main house is beautiful, kitchen well stocked, and someone took the time to fill a billboard with information about the area. The waterfall is a bit out of the way but worth a visit. The bad: we didn't have a light in the cabana. There was a lightbulb, but it didn't work. We texted one of the caretakers, but they never replied. There is quite a bit of people for only two bathrooms. The propane was very very low in the kitchen, so boiling a pot of water really wasn't possible. We used the stoves outside. Most crucially, there was no power in the morning! Don't know what happened, but that meant no light and no water! Bad luck if you wanted to shower in the morning.

Rustic, private, secluded, beautiful. Loved being so close to a waterfall. Great geko roomates. Crazy thing, one lilicoi fell in our path each day we were there. Awesome! But the waterfall water was colder than I expected. Definitely recommend

The land is very well maintained. You access to two bathroom,kitchen and a tv room . The cabana itself it spacious and the hammocks are comfortable. Overall a great place to camping.

Great cabañas, friendly staff, clean showers. Only downside was the kitchen was a bit dirty and fridge was small and full of previous campers food. But nice pretty spot with a good location and friendly cats

Deluxe Glamping Hammock Cabana
We enjoyed the cabana because it was like sleeping outside, but with a roof over your head to protect from the rain. Also the hammocks were better than sleeping on the ground. It was handy to have shared kitchen facilities and bathrooms. Best of all it was a very reasonable price!

Aloha My son and friend and I live on islsnd and came for a Hamakua getaway ~ We enjoyed everything about our experience ~ extremely clean ~ organized ~ comfortable ~ included all we needed including super sweet kitty love ~ incredible view ~ waterfall bliss and filled with aloha 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 highly recommend!!

Deluxe Glamping Hammock Cabana
We just had a quick one night stay, but enjoyed our cabana. Good view of the distant ocean on a nice piece of property. The shower and toilet areas are very clean and convenient to our Cabana #1. The facilities were more than accommodating. Most spaces are shared spaces. Not a problem for us, but you will likely encounter other travelers, sort of hostel-style. Would recommend. Will need to stay longer next time to experience the nearby town. Not far from Akaka Falls.

Single Hammock in a Coed Dormitory
If you want to experience Hawaii in a more relaxing environment to enable you to reconnect with nature, and even yourself, then this is exactly where you want to be! I went to Hawaii on a vacation by myself to get away and it was perfect! Disconnect from all the electronics and enjoy the beautiful views of the property! I honestly think staying here made me get out and explore more of the island, even when I was tired, because I didn’t have any electronics to distract me. The location is wonderful because you can see the sunrises from the top of the driveway every morning and all the stars at night. I actually forgot how amazing the stars are at night without any light pollution. Perfect place to either spend time alone relaxing or go up to the common area and chat with the girls that help run everything. They are all amazing ladies and one of them saved my life when a HUGE bee/hornet got in my cabana! She was brave enough to get the broom and get it on the floor to somehow get that thing back outside! I could never! It buzzed and I ran away screaming lol. The hammock was surprisingly very comfortable to sleep in considering my lower back hurts at times but no pain during this trip! The perfect temperatures at night keep you cool and comfortable. I can’t express how happy I am by making the decision to stay at the Hamakua Guest House and Cabanas! Thanks so much for making my trip to Hawaii more special than I imagined!

Deluxe Glamping Hammock Cabana
We had a wonderful experience at Glamping Cabana. Common areas were clean and easy to access. Showers and restrooms clean and hot water was a welcome after days of hiking. Loved sleeping in hammock- new experience- slept perfectly being serenaded by frogs. Matthew was responsive with communication and made us feel welcome. Cabanas were well built- screened in and had curtains that we could close at night when it was cooler. Great location!

Great, budget, hostel style accommodations. No power in the cabanas, but the main house has places to charge your things. Has the feel of a hostel, people from all over and of all ages coming together and mixing. It was a nice base for our Hilo adventures.

The cabin is exactly as pictured & described. It is challenging to locate, but they provide thorough directions. The area is relatively private, and its feels like a hidden gem.

We had a bad experience at this place and we initially booke 2 nights but left after one. Unfortunately, we really tried to make it work but a lot of things were not great. We were in Cabana 4 and one of the hammock was half broken, making it impossible to sleep. Even with the good hammock, sleeping was so unconfortable. My husband ended up sleeping on the ground. Add to this the plastic roof and the palm tree right on top of Cabana 4, wich made the rain (it rained all night) so loud because the water drops from the tree sounded pretty much like we were in a war. The ground was wet from the rain. The shower and bathrooms were nice and good. Kitchen was a mess and it felt like we couldn’t really use it because the staff filled the sink with dirty dishes. Our reserved space for food was already full of stuff. After the first night, we decided to go elsewhere to have a nice night of sleep.

Deluxe Glamping Hammock Cabana
This is the second time I’ve stayed here, would highly recommend! Amenities are top tier, location is beautiful and secure. Close enough to Hilo and attractions for quick, easy access, but tucked away enough to still feel embedded in the natural beauty of the big island. Will be back, thanks again for another great stay!

For the low price, this place is okay if travelling on a budget, and sleeping in a hammock is a cool idea. The communal areas really let this place down though, as the kitchen was pretty gross. You’re reminded to remove shoes before entering the kitchen, but the floor was covered with crumbs and other bits of food which was gross when walking around barefoot. The sink was also constantly filled to the brim with dirty dishes from the staff working there, so whenever we tried to cook, the hobs were covered with dirty pans and most of the dishes were unclean. There are only 2 showers and toilets for everyone, so you need to wait a while to shower. The safe in our cabana also wasn’t working when we arrived (staff hadn’t checked if the previous guest had reset the lock) so we had to carry our passports and laptops around everywhere with us. Overall, with the standard of the kitchen it felt like we were paying to stay in student accommodation, and there are plenty of budget places on the Big Island that are much cleaner than this place.

We absolutely enjoyed our stay and it was a true experience. Hammocks were cozy and sounds of nature lulled us to sleep. It was easy to get together with other guests and chat in the morning or evening. Liked the a little of the grid experience.

I absolutely loved the authentic atmosphere. Very thoughtful details. Welcoming directions, signs and amenities. I will be back! I woke up with a full heart and feeling an amazing. Everyone should glamp in a hammock at least once in their life - multiple times for extra happy. Mahalos!!!

Great amenities and feels like staying in true Hawaii! Definitely recommend for those who seek more out of Hawaii than an all inclusive resort. It was great not having to pack a tent on this trip!

Everything was good; the only issue is that if you are in a cabana, there are only two toilets for I don’t know how many people, potentially 10+ i think, and they are both in the same rooms as showers, so especially in the morning there is a bathroom line, and waits are long because people are showering, so if you are the kind of person who sometimes needs to use the bathroom now and not in 10/15/20 minutes, you might have a problem here. Just a warning.
