Hakalau Springs Campsite
Zak and Katies space is perfectly secluded and private with a nice composting toilet, fire pit, and swimming hole. The location is great for visiting Akaka falls, Honomū Goat Dairy, and Krishna Cow Sanctuary. We would definitely stay again.

Camping at Zak & Kate’s was a five star experience! Their instructions were spot on and the drive there was beautiful! The campsite has a waterfall/swimming hole, fire pit (Zak supplied the firewood!), chairs, covered picnic table, potable water, a composting toilet, and a mosquito netted gazebo. Zak also left us a lantern, citronella candles, and bug spray - it’s the little things! Their dog Sadie was the sweetest and made us feel very welcome! :)
We would recommend this camp 100 times over!

What a beautiful space, thoughtfully set-up for camper's enjoyment. A bunch of great amenities, like firewood, several sheltered areas for inclement weather, but most importantly the animals, Ernie the Goat became our new best friend! The spring was a gem, otherworldly even. Zak and Katie were phenomenal hosts, super communicative, helpful with local knowledge and very genuine.

Definitely enjoyed camping on Zack &Katies land, they made a beautiful spot for campers!
The toilet was very clean and spacious enough to change in.
Easy to find and very secluded, we also felt very safe!
You might hear an occasional moo from the friendly cows nearby but that’s what made it fun. We also made a prawn friend in the swimming hole
Falling asleep to the stream and frogs was my favorite part.

We loved Zak and Katie's land for camping. Slept incredibly well ---the layered sounds of creek, birds, frogs created a perfect ambience for deep sleep!
Zak was super accomodating, there was wood for fire, water to drink. The composing toilet was clean and worked well.
Super happy we stayed here.

Quite simply, this campsite was awesome and another great one for families with kids. Hakalau Springs Campground was the 3rd of seven Hipcamp locations we stayed at during our 17-day excursion to the Big Island with our two young kids (10 & 11) and one of the best in terms of accommodations. Zak and Katie were great, very warm and welcoming. (as was their dog!) We all had a blast swimming in the waterfall on the property and enjoyed two nights of campfires and smores, for which they provided ample firewood and starting materials. The composting toilet was well maintained and very clean. However, the thing that most stood out was the large, heavy duty canopy, under which they provided a picnic table and full cooler of fresh water. If it's your first time to the Big Island, as it was for us, you will quickly learn that it's nearly impossible to predict the weather and this canopy was big enough to fit our tent alongside the picnic table, with space to spare, giving us added rain coverage. When the sun was up it was nice to be able to hang and dry clothes and get out of the sun to cook and eat. The land here is sprawling and beautiful and a great place from which to stage day trips along the coast from Honokaa to Hilo. Highly recommended.

This was our favorite campsite on the island! Pictures do not do it justice!! We had soooooo much fun there playing in the swimming hole, deep enough to jump off the rocks. So much fun! Fire pit was perfect for cooking out and had s’mores. Huge open space was fun to play in and even picked lychee off nearby tree. I was surprised by a beautiful sunrise through the trees. Definitely a gem here, hosts were so awesome and made sure we had everything we needed. Very clean compost outhouse and lights around camp. Zero negative things to say and I hope we can come back someday!!!!

Swimming in the waterfall pool was the most memorable part of our camping experience here. Otherwise, everything was just wet and muddy. We spent most of our time in town.

Zak and Katie have an incredibly beautiful property and a gorgeous waterfall as a bonus. Myself and my partner enjoyed camping here. They are wonderful hosts who are super accommodating. Directions were very clear and Zak provided us with many suggestions on attractions/things to do near by. We definitely recommend staying here🙂

Fabulous stay! The farm is tucked away and very quiet, aside from the choir of birds overnight. Zak provided excellent directions and a great little covered picnic area which was amazing since it rained for most of our stay. We would certainly stay here again!

The campsite was very nice. Surrounded by farm and jungle with views of the distant hills. Very peaceful. It included a picnic table with party-style tent cover, water jug, battery camp light, bug spray and a citronella candle (but I didn't notice any mosquitoes). The composting toilet was clean and odor free and easy to manage. The campsites are separated nicely although I had the place to myself when I stayed. Zak communicated very well with directions and asking if I had what I needed. I never met or saw Zak and Katie so they respect your privacy but are around if you need something. Their dog greeted me like a long lost friend but didn't jump or overstay his welcome - I would call it an understay actually because he's a very loveable dog. Bottom line l had a terrific stay.

We absolutely love this place. This was our second time here. The composting toilet is nice and doesn’t smell at all. The hosts are very accommodating and there is always a lot of fire wood to use. The water hole and waterfall is our favorite to play in. They have cows and a cute, goofy goat named Ernie. Thanks for sharing this special place with us. We will be back!

Wow what can I say! A slice of paradise on the island. We were lucky enough to have the whole place to ourselves Zak and Katie were super accomodating and went above and beyond to make sure we had everything we needed. The private waterfall was magnificent + toilet very clean. We hope to visit again 🌻🌞🌟

We had a phenomenal time tent camping at Zak and Katie’s, maybe our best hip camp yet. Their property is incredibly well cared for and we were in a stunning spot under huge old growth trees. There were farm animals, notably a very friendly goat named Ernie! Hosts were friendly and attentive, had great “extra” amenities like 5 gal drinking water jugs, and there was a little waterfall. Great spot to catch up with fam and spend some time outside. Thank you Zak and Katie!!!

We loved Zak and Katie camp site. The place is very spacious, clean and seems like a rain forest paradise. Zak and Katie are very nice and responsive hosts. This campsite is kids-friendly with a great spring to swim in (which is not cold), some farm animals to pet (Earnie the goat is so cute) and a lot of trees to shelter under in case it rains. I recommend this hipcamp!

This place is quite the dreamplace. We absolutely loved our stay and we will for sure stay again, if we ever come to Hawaii again. Zak was really kind and lovely host and made us feel really welcome and taken care of. Eventhough we stayed just a couple of nights I miss the morning dips in the waterfall and I am pretty convinced I now also need a property with my own private pond with waterfall. New life goal unlocked.

We really enjoyed our time at Zak and Katie's farm. They were super communicative, so it was really easy to work with them. The site is in a working farm, with cows and goats, which was super fun! We were very lucky that we were there by ourselves and had a chance to enjoy all of the amenities, including a dip in the waterfall-fed spring, which was, as expected super cold, but very refreshing. We were there on a rainy day, so we had to go inside relatively early, although each site does have a gazebo, citronella candles, a camping light, water and bug repellent, so we could have definitely hung out outdoors. We, unfortunately, were jet lagged and tired though, and were looking forward to hearing the chirping of the birds and animals from the comfort of bed. Would absolutely come back though!
