Toccoa Valley Campground stands out as a unique destination, nestled at the confluence of Big Creek and the Toccoa River, offering a serene escape for families seeking outdoor adventure and relaxation. Long before the era of interstate highways and modern conveniences, a young boy named Herman Long roamed this picturesque land, dreaming of one day calling it home. In 1942, shortly after marrying his beloved Lois, Herman fulfilled his childhood dream by purchasing the expansive acreage that would eventually become Toccoa Valley Campground. They built a home and settled into this beautiful landscape, unaware that Herman's vision for the land was only beginning to take shape. The 1950s marked the beginning of Herman's second dream as he joined the United States Forest Service, where he was responsible for developing recreational areas and campgrounds in the Blue Ridge region. His work on sites like Morganton Point and Fort Mountain inspired him to create a campground of his own, blending his passion for nature with family fun. Pioneering the river tubing experience, Herman began inviting travelers to picnic on his property and float down the river on large inner tubes. Upon retiring from the Forest Service in 1986, he officially established Toccoa Valley Campground, which has since been recognized as the oldest
