Larry & Penny Thompson Campground stands out as one of the last remaining pockets of wilderness in Miami-Dade County, offering visitors a unique blend of natural beauty and rich history. This serene campground, which spans part of the former Richmond Naval Station, was acquired in December 1974 as part of a significant 1,010-acre land transfer from the federal government, which also included the Zoo Miami property. The campground features remnants of historic fruit groves that once belonged to the University of Miami, providing a natural buffer and showcasing a variety of trees, including avocado, mango, and lychee. These lush surroundings create a tranquil atmosphere for campers, who can enjoy the vibrant wildflowers, palmettos, and rock pinelands that define the area. Larry Thompson (1911-1973) was a cherished humorist and daily columnist for the Miami Herald for 25 years, while his wife, Penny Thompson (1917-1975), was a pioneering figure in women's aviation during the 1940s and early 1950s in South Florida. Their family camping trips across the country were lovingly chronicled in Thompson's homespun columns, allowing South Floridians to share in their adventures.
