Popular hikers' campsite at the start of the Pennine Way and the foot of Kinder Scout, right next to a small visitor centre

Every journey has a beginning and an end — it just so happens that Edale is situated at both of them. The Pennine Way is the UK's first (and most famous) long-distance walking path, stretching both to and from the village and along the Pennine hills, otherwise known as the "backbone of England". Depending on how adventurers tackle the historic route, Edale can either be their starting point or their destination, and Fieldhead Campsite finds itself slap bang in the centre of this small but significant part of the Peak District.

Fittingly, Fieldhead is itself small while providing a significant selling point: its close proximity to the highest hills in the UK's original national park. The campsite is situated around the back of the Moorland Visitor Centre, giving you easy access to the best of the Peaks, along with magnificent views across to Mam Tor. Its positioning at the foot of moorland plateau Kinder Scout also means that you can hop right out of your tent and experience the scenery first-hand, with a scramble up the Grinds Brook Footpath, which is more of a rocky riverside hopscotch than a navigable walking trail.

Unsurprisingly, then, Fieldhead Campsite is most popular with hikers and mountain bikers. In fact, it surely has everything a walker requires. It's a matter of yards to the nearest footpath, there are two pubs within strolling distance, there's a bothy where you can hang wet clothes and the only train line to cross the national park – between Manchester and Sheffield – is a five-minute walk away, so you can easily get here by public transport.

The site itself is decidedly no-frills, consisting of five intimately-sized fields on varying levels of a riverside hillock, sheltered by fences and hedges. There are no electric hook-ups and mobile signal isn't exactly strong here, giving you the perfect excuse to switch off your devices. This break from modern life is further exemplified by the site's strict peace-keeping regulations, with visitors encouraged to keep it nice and quiet after 10pm and no cars allowed beyond the small parking area at the entrance to the site. It'll just be you, your tent, and the Peak District for the duration of your stay. And we'd wager that there are few combinations better than that.

We loved the central location of the campsite, between two pubs, near the station and with a car park. Great, for walking in the hills. Friendly campsite, where dogs are welcome. The shower is 20p for 2minutes. The location of the coin slot for the shower is outside the shower cubicle. This caused me some stress because I am not used to this inconvenience. The lady in the reception had plenty of 20p change. Great campsite, we will be back.

I went up to Edale in early August for a weekend trip with my son to do a bit of camping and walking. The countryside around Edale is stunning and the walks challenging enough to keep an 11 year old interested but not too difficult as to put them off from ever putting a pair of boots on again. The Fieldhead campsite is a favourite. It’s always well kept, never overcrowded and usually full of likeminded people. We camped on the bottom field by the stream which is a cracking spot. The only issue this year were the number of midges. They came out at twilight and were a pain. I think if we were there for more than a couple of nights we would have moved to a spot away from the water. Shower blocks are clean and tidy and there’s no issue with late night revellers. The owners are very friendly and happy to give advice. We had a great stay. The weather was fantastic and a beer at the Nags Head was fully appreciated after a days walking. I would thoroughly recommend the campsite for people wanting to explore the countryside around Edale. It’s definitely more suitable for walkers / cyclists / climbers than people wanting to party but if that’s what you’re after give it a go.

From the host
Fieldhead Campsite is in the centre of Edale village at the foot of Kinder Scout and at the start (or Southern end) of the Pennine Way. Giving perfect access onto the fells for walkers and cyclists. We are a small campsite around the back of the Peak District National Park Visitor Centre. If being outdoors is what your interested in then we are the place for you. We are a small quiet site that welcomes everyone that wants to experience the outdoors whether that be wild swimming, climbing, hill walking, mountain biking or just sitting outside reading a book to get away from it all. There is limited signal onsite so you can really escape from the hustle bustle of the outside world and holiday in peace. The area has plenty to offer, with amazing walks for all, beautiful scenery and a range of amenities including pubs, cafes and a visitor centre. We are a quiet site set in the centre of a small village, people stay here for the peace and tranquil atmosphere so we do expect noise to be kept as a minimum. Please note: We cannot accommodate large family or friend groups (over 5 adults). Organised groups such as DofE welcome but please contact us direct. Campers must be quiet after 10.30pm until 7.30am in the morning, and no loud music to played on site at all No fires. No disposable or charcoal BBQ's allowed (gas stoves are accepted). Arrivals from 2pm. Depart by 10.30am.
Nearby attractions

Fieldhead Campsite is located at the foot of Kinder Scout, the highest point of the Peak District with one of the best routes up to the high plateau summit via the Grindbrook Footpath starting just a matter of yards from the campsite. So pack a good pair of boots. The path follows the rocky route of a brook that bubbles down the mountain in a series of waterfalls and spills and is a tremendously atmospheric setting. The top of the mountain itself is a large peat bog and can be wet at times, so the most popular walking route is to return back down or to follow the edge of the ridge (rather than crossing the flat, boggy plateau, and coming back down the mountain via the Jacob's Ladder Path and the Pennine Way (around a four-hour walk in total if doing the full loop from Edale to Kinder Scout and back via Jacob's Ladder and Upper Booth). Elsewhere, Mam Tor, is the most popular peak in the National Park (views of it from the campsite). You can hike there from the campsite or cheat by driving to the car park near the summit. The mountain pass via Mam Tor will also take you over to Castleton and the underground cave system of Speedwell Cavern (around a 10-minute drive). Reaching both involves a drive through the dramatic, steep and narrow road of Winnats Pass. Ladybower Reservoir is a 20-minute drive, with a five-mile walk around its perimeter and good cycle hire options. Of course, the best place to get your bearings is just to wander the few yards from the campsite to the Moorland Visitor Centre, which is right next door!

Food and drink

Edale has two local pubs: The Old Nags Head (01433 670291) is a 16th-century stone-built pub higher in the village near the head of the footpaths, with tons of character, its low ceilings reminding of a time gone by that's seen it rank among The Times' 20 best pubs in the UK. Then there's also the Rambler Inn (01433 670268), an excellent place to stop off after a brisk walk. It has a decent garden that catches the sun and is always busy thanks to it's convenient location lower in the village across from the train station where walkers wait with a pint before catching their ride back to Sheffield of Manchester. The village also has two cafes: Penny Pot Cafe (01433 670688) provides cakes and coffee with outdoor seating on the deck, while Newfold Farm Cafe claims "great coffee and good vibes", while its titular farm also has a small general store.
