A family-friendly, 10-pitch campsite in Cornwall with big views, rustic facilities and a touch of magic

No, it's not an ice-cream induced mirage. This really is a quiet campsite in Cornwall within walking distance of a beach, standing stones, a wild swimming spot and a pub. Located on a six-acre smallholding with sheep, horses and a mule, it has views of the sea and beautiful sunsets. Campfires are allowed; tents, campervans and dogs are all welcome. If you’re wondering what the catch is with Ryn Gwari Farm, we’ll tell you: it’s only got 10 pitches. But, of course, that’s only a problem if you’re not fast enough to book one.

Before you get carried away though, there are a few things you need to know before you reserve your place at this site. Its rustic facilities and exposed location won’t be for everyone. There are just a couple of compost loos and a basic, but hot, shower as well as an outdoor sink for washing-up and, er well, that’s about it. This is camping like it used to be and should the heavens open or a Cornish wind blow in off the sea, it’s just you and your tent against the elements. There’s no under-cover area and little by way of shelter but Rebecca, who’s had the smallholding here for over 15 years, will let you know if something’s brewing. And, if you’re here in good weather, the pay-off is as huge as the skies you’ll be camping under.

This two-acre field offers expansive views and ample room for the ten families who’ll share it at any one time, some in their own tents, others in the pre-pitched tipis provided – and Rebecca’s animals, including an especially friendly farm-yard cat, will be a hit with the kids. The closest beach is just a mile-and-a-half away at rocky Priest’s Cove, where there’s a sea-water pool hewn out of the rocks. From there you can walk out on the glorious South West Coast Path for miles safe in the knowledge that you can ride the open-top bus back.

For sand and surf head for Sennen or Gwynver, about six miles down the road, stopping to pick up a pasty at nearby St Just. But, if you don’t fancy getting in the car, you can simply walk straight out the back gate and on to Truthwall Common to discover a little bit of Cornish magic. It’s a short walk to the ancient Tregeseal Standing Stones with a delightful little swimming hole nearby. While other parts of Cornwall are swamped with visitors in summer, it’s possible to enjoy a stroll and a swim here without seeing a soul.

Star Bell Tent
Camping with a sea view
Nestled in a spacious camping field with sea views, this tent offers a unique and comfortable camping experience. The tent has one double bed and two single air beds set up, an outdoor kitchen area, an outdoor shower and toilet. One of the standout features of the Star Bell Tent is its lighting. Fairy lights twinkle overhead, and bunting adds a touch of whimsy to the decor. Facilities are shared with fellow campers, fostering a sense of community and adventure. The communal aspect adds to the overall charm of the experience, making it a great choice for social campers and families.

Lovely quiet and simple campsite between the moor and the village. A nice mile to the coast path. Rebecca is a great host and we'd love to stay again!

Camping Pitch
August holiday
The campsite is set in a quiet lane not far from the nearest village. The Queens arms and The Trewallard arms were our favourite pubs both within walking distance. The site has spectacular views of the sea and the sunsets are incredible. There are no set pitches just set up where you like, most people were around the edges when we were there. The toilets are fine just what you would expect with compost toilets. We did take our own light as one night someone damaged one of the campsite lights that are located inside. The washing up sink only has cold water so we washed up at our pitch. The shower is very basic and was very temperamental, for me this would be the thing I would change ( basic is fine if hot water readily available) and could also be made better by having two showers as there was quite a queue some days. Overall this site is great, quiet, well located, extremely picturesque and laid back. We will rebook as we had such a great week if I could ask for anything please sort the shower ! Thanks 👍🏻

Camping Pitch
Sea views, quiet coastal paradise.
Fantastic campsite! Sea views from the whole field and there were never more than 11 pitches occupied even though it was the August bank holiday. Other campers seemed to be there to enjoy the glorious views and sounds of nature - no loud voices or music - just the sound of choughs next to our tent. Well -placed for coast path walks and circuits taking in the stone circles and other neolithic sites up on the moors. 2 composting toilets were adequate for number of people - I really hope the numbers continue to be restricted. Rebecca was very responsive to questions too.

From the host
Welcome to Ryn Gwari Farm. We are a family run 6 acre small-holding with camping available during the summer holidays. Ryn Gwari is situated along a quiet lane, 1 mile from the nearest small town of St Just. Our camping field is a 2 acre field, with panoramic sea views towards the Isles of Scilly. The 10 family-sized pitches are spread across the 2 acre field, with loads of room between pitches. On the small-holding we have sheep, ponies and a very friendly farm cat. We are popular with people who love the rustic, simple nature of our farm and being away from the crowd. We are a quiet campsite, orientated towards families or adults that are looking for a relaxing time. We are pleased to offer a relaxed way of life up here, but we do love a gathering round the campfire and there is wood available for you to share a fire with other campers each night. The area is the wild far-west end of Cornwall. Expect epic sunsets and big skies. We are close to the fantastic surfing beach of Sennen (6 miles) and Gwenvor and easy access to the south-coast beaches of Perranuthnoe and Praa Sands. Nearer to the farm and within walking distance (1.5 miles) is the cove of Cape Cornwall. We also love the moorland behind the farm, it’s possible to walk for miles without seeing a soul, even in August! From the camping field you can walk up to the moors without touching the road. Up here you will find a beautiful natural environment with a rocky carn, a stone circle and a pool that you can swim in. This moor links up to others that stretch all the way along the North Coast to St Ives. Less than a mile from the farm in the other direction, you reach the South West Coast Path. Here you can turn left or right and walk for miles. We can help you to plan circular walks from the farm, or for larger groups, we may be able to organise guided day walks. In St Just there are various cafes, pubs and takeaways, coop and local shops. There is also a pub about half a mile from the farm in the village of Truthwall. We also offer the whole farm or camping field for hire for events such as weddings and large gatherings, please contact us if you would like further information on this. We can also offer exclusive use of the site for large groups of campers or camp groups including school groups.
Nearby attractions

You can walk from the campsite out on to Truthwall Common, the edge of West Penwith Moors within the Cornwall Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Here you can see the Tregeseal Stone Circle and take a dip in a nearby pool. The moors stretch all the way to St Ives, more than 10 miles away. Cape Cornwall is a mile-and-a-half from from site. You can walk there or drive the short distance and park up at the National Trust car park. The stunning South West Coast path passes here and an open-top bus provides a service along the coast. The Priest’s Cove, just below, is a rocky beach with a small sea water pool carved out of the rocks and a slipway for local fishermen. Sennen Beach is six miles away Gwynver Beach, just before it. St Just (two miles from site) is a good spot for picking up supplies, eating out and browsing independent shops and galleries. The South Coast Beaches of Perranunthnoe and Praa Sands are within 20 miles of site too.

Food and drink

Rebecca can organise deliveries of milk, bread and a few other basics from a nearby dairy. There’s a pub with a beer garden, The Queens Arms (01736 788 318), half a mile down the road in Botallack. For more places to eat out and pick up supplies, head to St Just (two miles away) where there’s plenty of choice; the Dog and Rabbit (01736 449811) café comes recommended.
