The 160 acre ranch was homesteaded by my grandfather over 100 years ago. He was an engineer. **Please note that the GPS will take you 300 feet away from my property, please follow my clear instructions that are sent in your welcome email. There is signage that you can also follow. ** The plan was to use this property as summer grazing for his cattle. The cattle were wintered at the other ranch about 10 miles away, which was homesteaded by my great grandfather. Because my grandfather could survey, he made sure the property lines zigzaged up the valley so the small creek was in the middle to provide water for the animals. He chose well. It is a beautiful, quiet place with elk, deer and wild turkeys. There are tons of wild flowers in the summer. Columbines, the Colorado state flower, wild roses, paintbrushes and lots of wild chokecherries. With nice views of nearby mountains, open pastures, evergreen forests and aspen groves, it looks like it did 100 years ago. Plus, there are a couple of ponds for your dogs to cool off in. Since the first cattle, the ranch has also been home to goats, chickens, horses, and now more goats, alpacas and llamas. And of course the Great Pyrenees ranch dogs. I had a house built a few years ago and live on the property full time. The ranch is surrounded by Pike National Forest with the Colorado Trail connecting the property in a number of places. Some of the highest ranked mountain bike trails are nearby. There are lots of places on and off the property to hike, mountain bike and ride your horse. On a clear night you can see thousands of stars and hear coyotes howl. For a drone video of the ranch check out: YouTube's Midsummer 2020 Flyover. Elevation 8,000 feet, Average Summer Temperatures: Days 60-80 f, Nights 45-60 f, Sunshine Average 73-80%, Colorado Trail Segment 3, USGS Maps: Windy Peak; Green Mountain quadrangles. This is the official info. Basically, the weather is usually similar to the Denver area - just 10 degrees cooler. About 8 miles away is the small town of Bailey. It has just about everything you might need: small grocery store, coffee shops, gas, laundry, a dollar store, hardware store, camping and sports equipment, brew pub, winery, a few restaurants, potable water station and more.

#10 Creek Song

99%
(113)
RV/tent site · Sleeps 4 · Vehicles under 20 ft
Yes, creeks sing. Spend your evenings listening to the creek flow near your camp. Nestled under the ponderosa trees, this site is great for tents, truck campers and small RVs. There is a small bridge across the creek to the meadow. This campsite is the closest to the creek. There is a table and chairs plus a wooden spool that can be rolled to your favorite spot for prepping and cooking or evening drinks while relaxing around the fire. This spot is a  nice cozy area for families and a small group.  You can drive to and park at the site. Go across the bridge in the evening to the open meadow and view the stars. Maybe the howling coyotes will join in chorus with the singing creek.

# 7 Ponderosa

99%
(84)
RV/tent site · Sleeps 10 · Vehicles under 20 ft
Imagine up on a ridge with views of nearby Windy Peak, surrounded by majestic Ponderosa Pines. This is a long site with the shade of many trees and an open area further down for star gazing at night and catching a few rays during the day. Inspect two trees which were struck by lighting close to 100 years ago.  There is space to spread out, the kids at one end and you at the other. Listen to the coyotes howl while a breeze gently rattles the pine needles. Site had a wooden spool high enough to use a prep surface for meals. Plus, tall chairs that fit under the spool Included is an above ground firepit. Plenty of room to park near the site. Small campers and small rv's can fit at the entrance to the site which is just below the area where the firepit and spool is. Check the photo with the white car in the background to give you an idea.

#3 - Old Corral

RV/tent site · Sleeps 15 · Vehicles under 28 ft
Old Corral:  Yes, it was originally used as a corral years ago. But now it is an interesting artifact. This is a flat area is near the creek, a small pond and of course the old corral. There are willows and aspen on the flat area and an evergreen covered hill that jets up behind the site.  It will fit tents, trailers, and small motorhomes with very little leveling. You can drive to and park at the site. The site can hold 2-12+ people and their vehicles. There is a picnic table, firepit, plus most important - a porta pottie.

#8 Blue Spruce

RV/tent site · Sleeps 6 · Vehicles under 15 ft
Named after the Colorado state tree. This camp site for tents is sprinkled with plenty of Blue Spruces. There is actual grass since it is near the creek. Think of your tents nestled among some of the most majestic trees. Some folks have gotten a small teardrop size trailer in. But this site is primarily for tents. Of course there is a table and chairs along with a firepit. And a porta pottie nearby.

#9 Wild Rose

(68)
RV/tent site · Sleeps 25 · Vehicles under 20 ft
Wild Rose is a quiet cozy site that can fit 16-20 campers in tents and smaller RVs. Very private spot for for small groups. It is up a bit from the creek and the pond, but a short walk will take you to it. There are wild roses in the summer with ponderosa and lodge pole trees sprinkled throughout for a bit of shade. Plus, the aspens of course. There is a table and chairs. Around the fire pit area there is circle of logs to sit on in the evening. Pull up some chairs to get comfortable roasting marshmallows for s’mores. Nearby, the tree level is thin enough to see the stars at night. This private site has its own toilet, no sharing at all with other sites.

#4 Backwoods

97%
(62)
RV/tent site · Sleeps 52 · Vehicles under 28 ft
A canopy for rain or shine. Way back away from it all. This is a private site for groups or a few. Up high facing the north and east. With great views of a nearby mountain, you can set up your motor home in an open spot or your tent in little nooks back in the trees. Parts are flat with a bit of leveling depending on where you park. It will fit campers, trailers, tents and even a large motor home has been back there. You can drive to and park at the site.  A steep hill of lodge pole and ponderosa trees provides a natural back wall to the site. Plus, a great rock formation for climbing on. There is a porta pottie and the site can hold up to 2-50+ people and their vehicles. Check out the YouTube video of the ranch. (Midsummer Flyover 2020) Where the drone makes a turn halfway through the video is an aerial view of the “Backwoods” campsite.

#2 Steller Jay

98%
(60)
RV/tent site · Sleeps 18 · Vehicles under 20 ft
There are actual Steller Jays in the forest. These active birds are the unoffical host of Colorado mountain camping. Or as some say, they really are camp robbers not hosts. Either way this site is named for my favorite blue bird. Part of the site is surrounded by ponderosa and lodge pole evergreens to provide shade during the day with a peak at the stars at night. There is a picnic table for serving and eating dinner, plus breakfast and lunch of course. A wood fire pit is provided with plenty of nearby wood to scrounge for a fire to warm the chilly evenings. Nearby is a trail that leads down to a bridge across the creek. There is plenty of room for tents, and smaller Rv's, smaller campers.  Want to get together with the extended family? This is a nice, favorite camping spot for a number of people. Or you can leave everyone else in town and enjoy the peace and quiet. Either way there is plenty of room for parking and most important a porta pottie nearby.

#6 Pie Rock

98%
(58)
RV/tent site · Sleeps 6 · Vehicles under 15 ft
Pie Rock: Want a little space behind the rocks for only a few? This is it. Tucked away in a very small valley and surrounded by aspens.  Enough room for a family group. It is a very nice spot for a tent for the kids and room for a camper or small trailer for parents.  You can drive to and park at the site and there is a porta pottie right across the road. Why is it called Pie Rock? Right near the site is a large rock that is round. It looks like someone took a very large and very sharp knife and cut a huge slice out of it. As kids, my brother, sister and I starting calling it Pie Rock. When building the house, the excavator suggested moving the “slice of pie” to hold in dirt around the house. No way could we let that particular rock be moved.

#11 Humming Bird

98%
(53)
RV/tent site · Sleeps 12 · Vehicles under 20 ft
When I lived in Alaska, the people that went south escaping the cold, dark winters and returning for the glorious, sun filled summers were called Snowbirds. The Broad-tailed Humming Bird is Colorado’s version of a true Snowbird.  The red throated males return to the ranch about the third week in April and the females shortly thereafter.  They spend the summer here drinking from feeders and flowers. Then leaving around the first of September. On the first of July, the aggressive copper/orange Rufous Hummingbirds arrive buzzing and dive bombing like fighter pilots, trying to chase the Broad-tails away from the feeders. Humming Birds fly up from Mexico to spend the summers in the mountains of Colorado. Aren’t you glad you live close and don’t have to drive that far, or fly? Drink your morning coffee at the table while watching the sun rise over the mountain. Or at the end of the day do the opposite while the sun sets over Windy Peak. There is plenty of room for tents and small trailers/rv’s. The site is fairly level and there are enough pine cones to create any kind of pinecone art you can imagine or to use as kindling for your evening fire. A fire pit is included, plus a wooden bench, table and four chairs as well as a wooden cable spool for cooking on and rolling to the meadow to hold your drinks. The Humming Bird site is surrounded by aspen and ponderosa trees. Nearby is a trail that leads down to the creek and a small bridge that crosses it. And another trail that leads to the Colorado Trail.

#20 Little Meadow

95%
(52)
RV/tent site · Sleeps 60 · Vehicles under 28 ft
There is a canopy for rain and shine! Plus, we cleared more across the creek ich will give more space and shade in the trees. The spot we call the Little Meadow has become popular. Probably, because it is the most private site. No other campers will come near you. But you might get a visit from the alpaca herd in the late afternoon on their way to bed.  You are way in back beyond everything in a meadow with the fancy outhouse and a few school buses. What? School buses? Yep, this is how we moved down from Alaska. They make great weather proof storage. Just so you know, back further, but not in the camping area is the storage spot of the ranch. Necessary items such as t-posts, nuts and bolts, pony cart, fencing panels and other fencing materials. The meadow can accommodate large RVs. Tents of course, and there is a fantastic, flat and cool spot across the creek. Great place for tents. Plus, right next to the site is what we call the "slash pile." Bring a bow saw or borrow one of mine and you will have plenty of firewood!

Named after my favorite wild berry. The tall bushes grow at the edge of the of the meadow. This spot is a Great Group Site! Got lots of people? #14 Dancing Leaves

99%
(47)
RV/tent site · Sleeps 10 · Vehicles under 16 ft
One thing I have always loved about aspen, besides the white and black bark is the way the leaves dance in the slightest breeze. In the fall it is like the trees are filled with shimmering gold. This site is in a small aspen grove with a few spruces thrown in for contrasting color and texture. A perfect little spot to park your tent/s. The site faces north, so there is plenty of shade under the trees to keep you cool in the summer. It is not too far from one of the springs, so due to the shade and somewhat nearby water there are numerous wild flowers. Which means plenty of humming birds. Also, there’s lots of firewood to be scrounged, some already cut to length. A couple tables, chairs and firepit are in place.

#13 Aspen Grove

100%
(46)
RV/tent site · Sleeps 8 · Vehicles under 20 ft
A SITE FOR TENTS and SMALL CAMPERS/RVs: Did you know that Quaking Aspen trees grow in a colony connected by their root system? They are the most, wide spread tree in North America. Individual trees can live from 40 -150 years. New trees grow via suckers from the roots which continue to live even after a forest fire. The oldest known colony of aspen is in Utah and is the oldest living organism on earth. It is estimated to be over 80,000 years old with root system weighing an estimated 6,600 tons. Ok, enough on the aspen lesson…. on to the site info. This site is back in a large aspen grove, though it is not 80,000 years old. It can hold a large number of people in tents, campers and small RV’s. There are lots of bunnies and numerous birds including the famous summer visitors – the Humming Birds. Plus, the wild flowers including wild roses, fairy trumpets and paintbrushes. With a high clearance vehicle, you can get back there easily and set up your camper with very little leveling. Cars will just need to be a bit careful until the access gets a bit smoother. You can put tents as far back in the trees as you would like, close together or spread out. There of course table, chairs and a fire pit. Lots of firewood to be scrounged at this site. Bring a hand saw or borrow one of mine. An ax is too much work - bow saws are best.

#16 Chickadee

95%
(46)
RV/tent site · Sleeps 20 · Vehicles under 30 ft
A wide open site for SITE for TENTS and TRUCK CAMPERS AND RV’s: I enjoy the flashy summer visitors, the Humming Birds. But, I REALLY like the Mountain Chickadees. Maybe it is because they are around all year singing: “Chick a dee dee dee.” Or maybe it is because they are a frequent visitor at the feeder in the winter showing off their black capped heads and white stripe above their eyes. These busy little birds are always a delight, having a discussion about lunch with the Juncos and Nuthatches. Or having a showdown with the Woodpeckers. This site is at the end of the large meadow, next to the willow and tree lined creek and fairly flat depending on where you park. It is wide open so you can view the stars at night sitting next to the fire pit to keep your toes warm. Coyotes might even serenade you.  There is a table, chairs and of course the fire pit.

#17 In the Hollow

100%
(43)
RV/tent site · Sleeps 6 · Vehicles under 15 ft
The Hollow is a very short walk down a small hill to a wonderful tent location. If you have a high clearance vehicle you could actually drive down to the tent area. It's in the middle of a grove of lodgepole pines, spruces, aspen and next to the small creek lined with willows. Though it is a steep climb to actually get to the creek. With the hills creeping up on two sides, this makes for a private site to hangout and relax. It is fairly flat in spots with lots of room for tents. Set your tent under the trees or near the creek. It is up to you. The site has a table and chairs along with a firepit if there is no fire ban. Since it is near water, there are many different wild flowers that bloom all summer long.

#19 The Dog House

96%
(42)
RV/tent site · Sleeps 19 · Vehicles under 20 ft
The Dog House, well it is one of my favorite places on the ranch. It a great, very flat spot under the aspens; right next to one of the springs that feed the creek. But - it is a bit close to the house. Though there is a row of trees along the creek that blocks the view to the house. Why is this an issue? The Great Pyrenees ranch dogs. These gentle giants are a bit nocturnal. They feel it is their job (and it is) to announce to the world the presence of just about everything that goes bump in the night. Foxes, bears, deer, elk, skunks, coyotes, frogs and at times I think mosquitoes. They might even like to visit you. So, if you feel brave, don't mind a chance of a bit working dog noise, or a possible visit of hairy white dogs, go for it.

#15 Raven's Roost

97%
(38)
RV/tent site · Sleeps 50 · Vehicles under 15 ft
This site honors the most common birds in the forest. Ravens are a constant visitor on the ranch. Flying high in the sky, landing on branches and cawing just for the fun of it. Even sneaking cat food out of the barn. This is a huge, wild, wide space with numerous trees for shade. Up and away from the creek, but near the path to the Colorado Trail.   Plenty of room for a few folks or many more where they can spread out and not be crowded.  The access is not the smoothest into the site at this time. So higher clearance SUV or pickup trucks are advised. Truck campers and small trailers are fine. Some leveling might be needed. But there are plenty of flat areas for tents. If you want to drive your town car, there is space nearby that you can park. Then carry your gear a very short distance. There is a table, chairs and a fire pit. But most important, a porta pottie is nearby.

Wild Turkey Meadow is in the center of the large grass meadow right next to the creek. Room for smaller RVs, campers and of course tents. There is even a spot for a medium size tent right next to the creek. You will need some leveling for sure. We have a stack of lumber at the site that you can use. The most level spot will be pointed out on your map. There is a table and chairs and of course a fire pit.  Plus, a canopy to provide a bit of shade on the sunny days. It is a tarp on a frame. But hey, shade is shade. Plus, if it decides to rain, you won't have to hide out in your tent. This is a wide open space to view the stars at night and maybe even see some wild turkeys during the day.

#21 Sherwood Forest

93%
(21)
RV/tent site · Sleeps 10 · Vehicles under 15 ft
Rough but ready: Sherwood Forest – NEW SITE for TENTS and Small CAMPERS/RVs. The original Sherwood Forest is in Nottinghamshire, in central England. Well folks, welcome to the Colorado version. This is where Robin Hood stays with his band of merry campers and hides out. A perfect, private hide away back in the trees. The Sheriff of Nottingham won’t be able to find you for sure in this hidden site. Surrounded by ponderosa and lodgepole trees, plus some aspen, it makes for lots of shade on a hot summer day. Until the access gets a bit smoother, in your high clearance vehicle ( SUV’s, Trucks, etc. ) you can drive in. If you brought your town car, you can park on the edge and it is only a very short walk to carry your gear. Or camp right on the edge of the site behind a few trees. The meadow right across the road is a favorite spot for grazing deer, elk and of course alpacas, cashmere goats and ponies. Plus, it is a great location to take the chairs down in the evenings to have a cup of hot chocolate and view the stars in the night sky. Many birds like to visit – Chickadees, Hummingbirds, Pine Siskins and Wood Peckers just to name a few. There is a table, chairs and firepit. And plenty of dead aspen to gather for firewood. A small bow saw would come in handy. Leave the ax at home. It takes too much work. And YES there is a pottie near by.

#23 Fairy Glen

100%
(13)
RV/tent site · Sleeps 6 · Vehicles under 15 ft
Glen: a secluded narrow valley. The ranch has always been a magical place for me. As a little kid, I loved listening to and watching the little fairies singing while flying all around the forest. This smaller site is in honor of those magical creatures. Of course it was when I got older that I realize those little fairies were actually hummingbirds. Still magical though. This small site is deep in the forest, between two short ridges which block views of other sites and the road. It is good for a couple regular size tents. r a SMALL RV. You can park at the entrance and walk a few feet or drive back into the site with a higher clearance vehicle. If you can back up a trailer easily, a small teardrop type trailer can fit right inside the first part of the site. Towards the rear of the site is of course a table, chairs, fire pit and the famous wooden spool where you can cook on and place your drinks in the evenings. There is a short trail right over the ridge to a porta pottie. What more could you want? Maybe some fairies will come to visit. Well, at the least a few hummingbirds will.

#18 Chipmuk

RV/tent site · Sleeps 4 · Vehicles under 30 ft
Everyone must have a favorite rodent. Mine is the Colorado Chipmunk. Well, I like the Abert’s Squirrel too. But the Chipmunk ranks a bit higher. Quick little guys that scamper around with their tail vertical. When they slow down, the tail wags side to side while singing a high pitched “chip.” See all those chewed up spruce cones and ends of ponderosa needle clumps on the ground, that’s lunch. Or breakfast, or dinner, or snack. Well, you get the idea. The Chipmunk site is a small site near the ranch road. But just by chance we found out a 28’ trailer can be backed in and still have room for another vehicle. Must have been interesting getting around a 90 degree turn to get there. Flat space that will fit a few tents also. Complete with a table, chairs, fire pit, wood spool. Most importantly, a large pottie right behind the site.
