Cabin on 110+ acres back'n to national forest will recharge your soul! It sits on Sangre de Cristo mountainside w/ 100 mile views & access to some of the areas best hiking & alpine lakes!
**READ ALL INFO BEFORE REQUESTING A STAY, ESPECIALLY WINTER AND SUMMER ACCOMODATIONS** DRIVING TO THE CABIN WILL REQUIRE A HIGH CLEARANCE 4x4 .
If you don't have the right vehicle, backpack it! You can park at the trailhead during your stay and hike to the cabin (1.4 miles with elevation gain of 1k ft).
The space
If you are expecting the ritz on the side of the mountain and are a fussy hospitality guest this is not for you and please stop reading. If you have a great attitude, love nature and want your breath to be taken away by views and nature you will have an incredible experience. We work hard on this property but given it's remoteness challenges do arise from time to time and there is work required from you for a successful visit, keep reading :)
WINTER and SUMMER stays are quite different, read entire listing before inquiring as this cabin is not your typical airbnb. If you aren't willing to read the write up I'll be less likely to approve your stay as this takes effort from both the host and guest for successful stays.
WINTER BOOKINGS --NO WATER OR TOILET, OUTHOUSE ONLY. (December through April): We are now offering this cabin during winter season for ski touring, cross country skiing and snowmobilie enthusiasts! This will be pack it in, pack it out and clean up after yourselves honor system. 3 night minimum booking in the winter season. NO WATER OR INDOOR TOILET, outhouse only for your toilet, propane cooking stove for food and wood burning stove for heat. I have personally visited for winter ski touring and the skin up is a nice workout but not unreasonable (1.5 miles from parking below to cabin). Cozy fireplace and true winter escape! Note in Winter there is still a "cleaning" fee but this is to offset our winter stocking of materials, firewood, etc; pack it in pack it out during winter no official cleaner.
SUMMER & FALL (May 9th through August): Recent feedback / reviews were heard and resolved mid 2021 and we improved the property with linens on site, periodic deep cleanings, and the place is looking great! The initial part of the road to the cabin is VERY rough. Low clearance vehicles don't have a chance. Jeeps, SUVs and high clearance trucks/SUVs can make it if they have AWD or 4WD. Pack it in pack it out, no cleaner, fee is for stocking.
CLEANING FEE: upon booking (after 3.6.23) cleaning fees are charged at $225. $75 will be refunded after the guest sends videos to the host with a code word in the video proving they have left the property in good condition. The $75 is only refundable if the property is left in good clean condition and the videos are clear inside and outside with a code word. This helps the host verify the condition is ready for the next guest. Outdoors people understand this is a unique property and has extra work, if you're not willing to do this don't bother coming to this property.
This property is run similar to the 10th mtn division hut system, PACK IT IN PACK IT OUT, WE CHARGE A CLEANING FEE TO STOCK UP GASOLINE (FOR THE GENERATOR), WOOD AND PROPANE BUT YOU ARE IN CHARGE OF LEAVING IT READY FOR THE NEXT GUEST. AND REQUIRED TO SEND CHECKOUT VIDEOS.This property is simply too remote for regular cleaners to be economically feasible but the remoteness is the beauty of it!
For a great experience you provide: cooler, drinking water, food, ice (fridge is shut off), towel, toilet paper + a good attitude. Linens are on site but since it's off grid there's no washer and dryer so feel free to bring a sleeping bag if desired (but not totally necessary).
We provide: an amazing cabin, generator power to fill up the cistern, running water (*summer and fall--not during winter*), flushing toilet inside and an outhouse outside, mountain cold shower, firewood & all you need to prepare & serve food.
*Please note, we do not allow single night bookings for Fridays or Saturdays during the summer, 2 night minimum requested (you can book Thursday or Sunday to get to your two nights though). This is due to our limited seasonal rental window and the costs to maintain an off-grid cabin of this magnitude. Please note if you have pets we do leave rodent poison in corners/closets etc so be mindful for your loved critters.
Guest access
The 100+ acre property is gated and private backing to thousands of acres of national forest right out the backdoor.
Other things to note
Westcliffe is a certified Dark Sky City, we highly recommend you come ready to gawk at the stars as the views are ABSOLUTELY STUNNING!!
From the cabin, you can bag a 14er (Humboldt peak) if you are an animal, or take a gorgeous 4.4 mile one way hike to south colony lake for us mortals. Don't forget your pole, there be fish in them lakes!!! Or simply take in the views and enjoy the serenity. Your choice!
We have a welcome packet that deeply details the ins and outs of how to run an off grid home. It also provides maps of the local hiking trails and amenities.
There is also very detailed document to help you access the property. These are sent one day prior to your arrival.
