Learn more about this land:
Roaming Wild Hideaways - Hidden in Hartsel campsite is located in the heart of Colorado in a mountain prairie with beautiful views and pine trees for privacy. You will have mountain views to the east and even a peak view of Mt Silverheels to the northwest, a 13,829-foot thirteener located in Pike National Forest. At the top of the hill/rv/stargazing site, you also can see Spinney Reservoir in the distance. We also have Wild Things Nature Playground for the kids- with a swing, teeter totter, fort, and balancing course! Let their imaginations run wild! A horseshoe pit is also on site! There is a cooking fire pit located in the pine tree tenting area and a propane fire pit (please bring your own propane) located in the open prairie tent/rv site. Walk around the 5.65 acres and look for fossils, arrowheads, agates, and petrified wood! Beautiful wild flowers also bloom across the field, so please only drive on designated driveway and parking areas! Currently this is listed as one site for the whole 5 acres, you can choose whether you want to be out in the prairie or hidden in the pines or use both areas!
The central location of the campsite makes adventuring throughout Colorado easy! The city of Hartsel is just a short 10 minute drive down the mountain where you will find a gas station, grocery store, coffee and rock shop, and a restaurant/bar.
Located just under 30 minutes is the popular Eleven Mile State Park where you can hike, fish, bike, picnic, kayak and paddle. There is a playground and marina where you can rent canoes, kayaks, paddle boards and boats. They also have coin operated showers and laundry on site. My kids loved parking by the Coyote Ridge Nature Trail and hiking towards the Backcountry Campsites where they would cliff jump off of the big boulders! The water is cool, but refreshing! Eleven Mile Canyon State Recreation Area is also nearby.
Also just under 30 minutes is Spinney Mountain State Park with great fishing! And the popular "Dream Stream" where fishing is said to be spectacular! Antero Reservoir is also another fishing option close by.
To the northwest, Fairplay, Colorado is just a short 30 minute drive. This fun mountain town is home to the famous South Park tv show and features a museum. It also has a gold prospecting area at Fairplay Beach Park, and for a minimal $10 fee, you can try your hand at panning or sluicing for gold! Fishing is also great here and there are picnic areas as well.
Breckenridge is also about an hour away with plenty of hiking, mountain views, and tourist attractions in the popular ski town! Also fun for kids-see if you can find the gigantic troll!
Mueller State Park is about 45 minutes east and is a beautiful area for hiking and a great pit stop if you are headed to Colorado Springs.
Colorado Springs should not be missed, with Garden of the Gods and many other hidden gems! Check out Red Mountain Open Space park nearby for quieter crowds! Colorado Springs is an hour fifteen and the closest Walmart is in Woodland Park, about 50 minutes away in the same direction. Denver is about 2 hours north. There are so many areas to explore and enjoy within a couple hours from camp!
Hartsel is named after being in the heart of Colorado. It is a great location to set up camp and explore the state in all directions!
We hope you enjoy the mountains and views as much as we do! And please remember to abide by current fire regulations of Park County and pack out everything to keep it enjoyable for others!
