Nestled in Smith River, CA, this remarkable site, known as Xaa-wan’-k’wvt, translates to “Along-There Upon-It” in our Dee-ni’ language. This name reflects the prime land setting along the eastern oceanfront in the Smith River estuary, previously recognized as Ship Ashore and Salmon Harbor Resorts. On September 10, 2016, during the celebration of Dee-ni’ Day, the Tolowa Dee-ni’ Nation signed the initial offer for this property. This significant day marked the beginning of our journey to reclaim our historical Xaa-wan’-k’wvt Village, culminating in its return to our people as a Cultural and Economic Development Project on November 30, 2016. The land holds immense socio-economic importance for the Tolowa Dee-ni’, as it was once the site of the Xaa-wan’-k’wvt municipality, which provided governance, food, housing, and spiritual practices. Spanning sixty acres of prime oceanfront property, this area offers exceptional opportunities for business development and growth.
