This area is part of a rich history showcasing the westward expansion, gold mining and simple pursuits. Just step outside the cabin to access miles of single track through the Tahoe national forest, or jump in your car to access lakes, rivers and streams within a 10 minute drive. Snowboarding & skiing is a 25 minute drive away and snowshoeing & cross country skiing can start right off the front deck! Come relax in your own private off grid cabin with a cozy loft and a view of Tahoe National Forest. At just over 5,000 feet in elevation and a dirt road drive Muir's Muse is the perfect place to disconnect. A three minute walk will get you to the Pioneer Trail which is a 25 mile non-motorized trail meandering through Tahoe National Forest, Bear Valley, and mountain lakes at its terminus. Open to hikers, bicyclists, equestrians and all lovers of the outdoors, the adventures are endless! Although there is cell service, there is no electricity or running water. There is an outdoor fire ring, a pit toilet on site and a portable heater and small camp stove for you to use... Just bring your own small propane canisters. You will be sent an informational e-mail (not the one generated from Hipcamp) prior to arriving. This email outlines directions and local hiking/swimming holes etc., PLEASE check the email you provided to Hipcamp (and myself) PRIOR to leaving for your trip so you are best prepared! :) Happy outdoorsing! ***Please note that in winter months Muir's Muse is accessible only by snowshoe as our road is not maintained with snow removal. Very Cute!
The hipcamp was clean and the area around it was well maintained. The ladder to climb up and down the loft is a bit scary, so I would not recommend if you are afraid of heights. The place and area are super cute. We loved our stay.

Had an absolutely amazing time at the tiny house! If it’s cold, for sure bring some small green propane canisters. The stars and being in the woods are unbeatable.

Nestled in the trees
This little getaway is nestled sweetly in the trees. It's a perfect distance from Nevada City (~25 minutes) so you can still participate in all the good happenings in town. The loft is wonderful with a big window and a solid sleeping pad. The ladder took some getting used to....but it allowed our passage up and down just fine. There aren't any solar lights so it'll be helpful for you to bring your own. They had tealight candles for us which was a really nice touch. Don't forget your pillows and blankets too!

Weekend getaway
Fantastic getaway. The tiny house is as advertised. Few miles off the highway, so easy to get to from Bay Area. Great and friendly hosts, who took care of everything as needed. Quiet with safe and responsible fire ring, and plenty of stars.

Such a great place! All the information and details were accurate. The cabin is secluded and you feel like your all alone. Mister Bob stopped by to make sure we got the keys and gave us some information on trails. Porta Potty was clean and they provided plenty of toilet paper, hand sanitizer and air freshener :) The cabin was clean and had plenty of space for 2 people. Would highly recommend and will be coming back in the future.

Definitely will be returning! The cozy cabin was exactly what I was looking for, remotely located while providing protection from the elements. The host is quick to respond and provides valuable information prior to your trip. Although we did not have any issues locating the cabin I can imagine it being difficult to find if you do not read and prepare in advance. So make sure you take time to read it! I recommend visiting Spaulding Lake and go early to find parking if you are visiting the Bowman Lake area on the weekend.

Sweet little cabin in the woods!
We had an awesome time "glamping" in Tahoe National Forest at Muir Muses. The spot was the perfect size for the three of us (mom, dad, and furry friend). We hiked on the Pioneer Trail just a few feet from the cabin down to Emerald Pools (highly recommend on a hot sunny day)! The trail was partially cut off because of the new construction, but we made our own trail for a bit until it reconnected. I recommend AllTrails for a more accurate map of the trails nearby. No bear sightings, but we almost had a bad run-in with a rattle snake. Overall, the space was clean (including the Porta Potty) and very comfortable. Pro tip, bring an air mattress and put it over the futon on the bottom floor for a comfy sleep. The candles inside the cabin were a very sweet and appreciated touch. Finally, Deana was a responsive and helpful host! Great spot for a quick getaway. 10/10 recommend.

We had a great time, despite the following issues. The mosquitoes were relentless. It’s due to the fire buckets that sit stagnant right beside the cabin. My kids have at least 75 bites each. I have probably around 50. We stayed two nights and used bug spray and bug bands. The directions to get the key were wrong and it was awkward to find with the directions wrong. Since I’m wandering in the woods not exactly sure if I turned off the main road correctly or not. Knowing I’m on someone’s land though! A simple post with some sort of making would be great! There was nothing off the sort, and the rope color in directions was wrong. The owners could do a much better job marking where to turn off and correct the instructions to find the key lock box. It did feel secluded though!

Cute cabin, not totally private
This is totally my fault, but I’ve never rented a structure of any kind that didn’t have any kitchen wares available for use, so that caught me off guard—especially since there WAS a camp stove. But that’s all there was, and my incorrect assumption left me without a saucepan, forks and plates, which made cooking…well, impossible. Cold spaghetti it had to be! Anyway, the mini cabin is cute & quaint, but not nearly as private as I expected it to be based on the listing description. While the site host was kind, he also got a little carried away talking politics without any invitation to do so. I appreciated that there was a clean port-o-let close by.

The off the grid accommodation is the perfect retreat from the hectic outside world. Be prepared to explore the richness of gold country, go for peaceful hikes in the Tahoe National Forest and even go back in time in North Bloomfield. All this would not be possible without the SUPER WARM hospitality of our hosts - Bob and Vicky. They are genuine human beings. A gigantic THANK YOU to them.

Muirs Muse is an amazing place to decompress and escape city life. The restroom and cabin were clean upon arrival. The host was delightful and provided helpful info for our stay. The cabin provides a propane two-burner stove, a propane heater, bear spray, air horn, books, and games. Can't wait to return!

This is our second stay at Muirs Muse and we loved our stay both times! We were lucky enough to get a snow storm both times and we enjoyed sledding and snowball fights. The host is incredibly friendly and helpful. Our little boy and chocolate lab rate it a 5 out of 5 stars because “we had everything we need and Bob chopped wood for us and this place is the best.”

Great spot. Houses/ keeper on site
Great little spot. There are houses all around but it did feel private.Top areawas to hard for me to get down( did it once... scared ave almost hurt myself) from so we slept on the main floor and the foldout couch futon thing us about as uncomfortable as you would imagine. Bring your own airmat.. it will be better. We made it up before the storm but had to go trough 8 propane canisters to stay warm at night. The house is set up for power and has a generator plug but there is not one at the tiny home. There's one running nonstop next door...so if you have one I would bring it. We did get cell signal( verizon) I know some people cannot go without so its always good to note.Fire pit was nice and right out the front door. Very clean porta potty( GO BEFORE BED! LOL). The only real downside besides the fact that for some reason I thought this was on an acre or private is a sad thing to note.I LOVE BIG DOGS! I had a 188 pound dane so I am used to them. The new very full size Doberman did charge a couple times. I my ground knowing better then to turn and run but a child or someone who doesn't know big dogs might trigger the dogs attack i Instinct when someone is on is property and runs. A child 100% could and would do this. Beautiful boy hopefully he gets trained and 1 the family taking care of the property that lives there & let's the dog come down to the tiny house at will, will get it trained and be able to keep him. 2 hopefully this happens and no one is bitten.

Relaxing and comfortable glamping
Muirs Muse is such a special place! My partner and I had a wonderful time relaxing and hiking (we enjoyed the Pioneer Trail and drove 40 minutes to Carr Lake for a hike in the snow!). The cabin stayed cozy with the heater, so we were glad we brought propane. We love Nevada City, so it was also nice to spend some time in town, less than a 30 minute drive from Muirs Muse. This is a great getaway for folks who enjoy camping but want the comfort and warmth of 4 walls, a roof, and a lofted bed area. We hope to come again and would definitely recommend this place to others! Probably wonderful in any season, but Fall was particularly gorgeous.

Waiting out the storm
The Muir’s Muse Retreat was wonderful ! My two dogs and I spent the weekend inside staying warm during the heavy rainfall storm. This off-grid location is a perfect getaway for relaxation & time away from the busy life. What you see is what you get but the most basic comforts are available. Provided: propane stove, two propane heaters, umbrella, porta-potty, futon couch, coffee table & mattress make the stay just comfortable enough while still allowing for the camping spirit! I would suggest for a two night trip (in the winter) to bring 2-4 mini propane tanks- to use between the stove and heaters, lots of blankets, pillows, and extra candles or battery powered lights because it is very dark out there! Also during non-rainy months the established fire pit is available for cooking over the flames instead of needing the propane stove. I hope to come back in the spring time to enjoy this awesome getaway again!
