It is on this property that I saw my first grouse. Also look for warblers-notably Audubon's and the Hermit Warblers- along with the White-headed Woodpecker. You will likely hear a Pileated Woodpecker and if you are lucky you will see one Learn more about this land: Welcome to Sugarpine Slopes. The Sugarpine has the longest cones in the world and many birds and mammals like the pine nuts and use the tree for habitat. This is a spring through fall place only. There is no winter access. The property is at 5800 feet.  Depending on the weather the road may close from Nov 15th to May 15th.  The road on the property is a dirt road.  All wheel drive or 4WD vehicles recommended although the lower section could be accessed by most vehicles. Shorter trailers allowed at Site A. Site 3 can also accommodate a small teardrop-style trailer The property is totally undeveloped at this time. It is a wildlife corridor for deer and bear (keep all food contained), the mountain quail and the blue grouse. Keep your eyes open for the Hermit Warbler, Audubon's Warbler, and our gorgeous visitor from the tropics the Western Tanager. You are likely to hear the Pileated Woodpecker and if you are lucky you will see it and its red crest in an undulating flight through the trees. The property has a lovely west facing slope which climbs gradually at first then more steeply to the top of the property. We have drive-in camping on the lower section.  There is one walk-in site at the top of the property. There is wonderful hiking nearby with several trailheads in the area within approximately 4 miles.  More information can be provided upon request.

Walk-in Grouse Ridge View

100%
(3)
Tent site · Sleeps 4
Pitch your tent or sleep under the stars at the top of Sugarpine Slopes which looks eastward to Grouse Ridge. It is a short walk, approximately a half mile up an old logging road to the top (this is a park and hike-in, your car will not be next to the tent-site). It takes 10 to 15 minutes depending on you! Follow the ribbons to the top and pick your spot.  The views through the trees are lovely and will give you the morning sunrise and in the evenings the setting sun will light up the Ridge. Look to your right and slightly downhill to see an old and large sugarpine tree with its huge cones hanging down from the end of its branches. This would be a perfect spot for your first overnight backpacking with young kids because it is a short hike but has the feel of being "out there" and you are close enough to the parking for you to go back at anytime. You are within 4 miles to the South Yuba River and various hiking trailheads in the area.

Site 3 Hermit Warbler

Site 3 is on the right under large trees with a small circular turn-around. This is a nice spot for just 2 people or more if you have extra friends or family along. Outhouse is down the road a smidge and across from the site. There is a large Sugarpine at this site. This is the site I saw my first Hermit Warbler, a beauty with a great voice. This bird travels all the way from the tropics to raise a family here for the summer.

Sunnyside Site A at Grouse Ridge

I think this site is best in the shoulder seasons because it gets a lot of Sun in the summer. In a few years some of the pines will be big enough to help out but not yet. Come along for some mountain air and listen to the sounds of warblers and woodpeckers.  You can find great hiking, biking, swimming in the local lakes, wildflowers, and just being outdoors for what ails you.  It can be chilly in the mornings and then hot on summer afternoons so be sure to bring various layers of clothing as well as sunglasses and a sunhat!

Site 1 Sugar Daddy Tent Site

RV/tent site · Sleeps 4 · Vehicles under 10 ft
Site 1 is best as a tent camping site but there is a somewhat level parking spot for a truck-camper or van across from the path to the tent site. Nestled under a large Sugarpine and a Ponderosa pine on a bed of pine needles, you can put down your tent or sleep in the open if you like that in warmer weather. There is a short trail that takes you to the top part of the site which is also a good place for tents or to set up your kitchen area. There is a backside entrance to the outhouse from there. Or you can go on the road to the outhouse up the dirt road on the left.
