The Otter Space Conference Centerwas purchased in 2002 by Dr. Peter Alsop as a place of peace and healing, where human service professionals have come to train with Dr. Alsop and learn how to help children and families cope with issues such as chemical dependency, loss and grief, child abuse and trauma. We are located on the Yurok Indian reservation right on the Klamath River just outside Orick, CA. The name Otter Space comes from a family of otters that live just down river. It’s also combination of “Artist’s Space” and “Outer Space” and implies the importance of thinking “out of the box” and valuing music and the arts in healing and living our lives fully, as well as the need to pass on earth and people-friendly skills to help our children survive into the future. We are "off the grid", through a Redwood forest and over a mountain down into the Klamath River valley. We have a 5 acre meadow, and orchard with 50 trees, peaches pears, apples, cherries, plums, pluots, apricots and grapes. We are right on the Klamath river on the Yurok reservation. It's a great place to come and recharge your internal batteries. (We have some solar panels and we have to start the generator to charge the other kind of batteries, because we're off the grid!) There is no telephone or internet service to interrupt your peace and quiet.. Our Main House was built in 1952 and retains the flavor of the 50’s. It houses a kitchen, dining hall, a living room, two bedrooms and a bathroom with a bathtub and shower. Our  Lodge currently houses Joe and Wendy Moore and their three children. Joe and Wendy live sustainably off the land and offer workshops on a number of sustainable practices. They will be available to help if help is needed. They also have emergency phone service to the outside world, … emphasis on “emergency”.  The Upper Barn is upstairs above the Barn and has it's own bathroom. Our Pumpkin & Blue Cottages each sleep 4-5 people. They are close to the shower house and toilets, and have hot and cold running water, a propane cooktop, and a wood stove for heat. We do NOT HAVE refrigeration, and we now have some solar battery electricity for lights at nigh or if the generator is on. We try not to turn it on very often.  Campers who use our Cottages may use their own sleeping bags, but we have beds with mattresses and pillows and clean bedding.  Then, ... for an adventure, there is our Romantic Tipi, that sleeps two (or three), and has it’s own fire pit and full size bed. Our Riverview Yurt will appeal to folks who want a full kitchen, a private shower and flush toilet overlooking the Klamath river from the 50 x 50 foot upper deck. Luscious to sit outside and watch the river flow by during the day, and to let the water lull you to sleep at night. For families (up to 8), old friends, folks who like to fish, or just for a very special get-away. We also have a plenty of places to camp. Our Maple River Camp and Grotto River Camp tent sites overlook the gorgeous Klamath River. Our Otter Space Meadow tent sites (Orchard Meadow, Morning Meadow, Deer Meadow), each have a picnic table and a fire pit and are close to our 5 acre meadow where blacktail deer graze in the evenings.  Our Yellow Shower House has two separate sides, each with a toilet, sink and shower with on demand hot water, so folks don't have to wait. There is also a new Camp Shower at the corner of the orchard for our campers,, and we have an outhouse at the bottom of the road down to the meadow, and another in the woods just past Deer Meadow Camp.  Feel free to pee outside (with discretion if there are other campers present), for any solid waste, please use the appropriate accommodations.  Please be considerate of others. We see lots of wildlife, we have silver foxes, a bald eagle, a family of river otters just downstream, ... we see vultures and blue heron and osprey who fly overhead when they catch a salmon and call to each other to brag about it! Sometimes we see timid black bears who run from humans but sometimes can be seen grazing in the meadow with the black-tail deer.  We are surrounded by old logging trails made by the lumber companies 80 years ago when they clear cut the old growth redwood on our side of the mountain, and now it's completely reforested with 200 ft tall Doug Fir, Madrone, Cedar, Oak, other pine species and Pepper wood trees.

Otter Space Maple River Camp
Off the beaten path with amenities
Due to the national forest closures, we had to make some last minute changes to our camping plans. Luckily, we found a campsite for two nights prior to our backcountry backpacking in the Redwoods at Otter Space. We booked for the Maple River Camp- this spot had a fire ring, picnic table, and we fit two small tents for 4 people under the trees. This is a shady campsite, and very clean. We did ask to use the unoccupied Grotto tent site the next night as this space was open (we wanted to do some stargazing). The amenities at Otter Space exceeded expectations- self serve wood ($8 for a large bundle), an outdoor shower (heavenly), and excellent hosts. The outhouse is a portajohn like structure over dugout hole, nothing fancy but got the job done and very private. Our group was not turned off by the dirt roads (expect about an hour drive from 101) but keep that in mind before booking. We truly enjoyed our stay from listening to the symphony of frogs at night (holy cow, you will not believe the frogs), to watching the deer in the meadow in the mornings, and walking along the river. Otter Space saved our camping weekend, and we cannot wait to stay again!

Nice and peaceful place to spend a few nights. Camp sites are far from each other so it feels like you are the only ones there. Walking around the grounds and down to the river is a must!

Otter Space Maple River Camp
A Fantastic Adventure
This place is incredible. It is certainly remote, but Peter gives helpful directions. The grounds were incredibly clean and quiet. The views were peaceful and serene. The river, while low, was still cool and flowing nicely. Our kids picked wild blackberries endlessly each day we were there. The guest hosts were incredibly kind and helpful. There is potable water, bath houses, flush toilets, an outhouse, and a hot shower available. You can buy firewood on the grounds for $10 a crate. Don't hesitate to book here. It was an incredible place to stay. Our family can't wait to come back. One note, the site is an hour away up and down logging roads from the major Redwoods Trails in Orick. Be prepared for that, but don't let it dissuade you. The trek to and from our site each day was all part of the adventure for our family.

Otter Space Pumpkin Cottage
My 20 year old son and I had a great time at Otter Space! We stayed 2 nights. We visited Otter Space as a highlight to our road trip from San Diego to Humboldt. We stayed at the Pumpkin cottage which had everything we needed. A small stove, a functioning sink, lights, No refrigerator but the cabin had a small insulated cooler that came in handy. It was very clean and comfy. The bathroom and shower were just below our cabin. We explored the riverbank and the nearby creek in the forest. Ate lots of wild blackberries. Saw deer, and a black bear across the river. We also chartered a sunset boat ride with Local resident Randy up the Klamath River. Otter Space is a great place to visit if you want to get away, enjoy nature and get off the grid for a bit. We didn’t take our fishing poles out but it would have been perfect for fishing.

Otter Space Maple River Camp
What a hidden treasure! Such a beautiful property and just loved our campsite overlooking the Klamath river. We brought our kayaks and left them down on the banks for our 4 nights there. Sometimes didn’t feel like we were roughing it due to the camp kitchen sink and the outdoor hot shower! We fell asleep each night to the frogs croaking and blackberries to pick for breakfast as they were everywhere! Peter, the owner, is an interesting man to talk to and we so enjoyed his unobtrusive hospitality! We will definitely be returning!

A Must Visit!!!
Otter space was our favorite campsite we’ve stayed at. You are in your own little oasis. The campground has so much to do that there’s no reason to leave. We spent time in the meadow and the river. The sunsets are beautiful!!! Highly recommend you if you’re on the fence about this place, just do It!!!

Otter Space Deer Meadow Camp
The forest setting of Otter Space is nice and there is certainly an opportunity for solitude. We intended to use the space to relax and also explore the nearby redwoods. The long dusty gravel road to Otter Space really means that you should plan to spend all of your time at Otter Space instead of also viewing it as an opportunity to explore the surrounding area. Peter has a very detailed listing and definitely make sure you read all of the details to ensure it’s the right place for you.

Otter Space Orchard Meadow Camp
This hipcamp is great!
This hipcamp is great! I enjoyed the charming pastoral aesthetics of the pastures, orchard, trees, and farm-like environs. The surrounding forested hills are likewise beautiful, and access to the Klamath River was wonderful. The hosts were super responsive and helpful. The campsites were nicely spread out so they weren't in eyeshot and felt private. (Neighboring campers from a single site adjacent to mine occasionally walked past to the facilities, but it was comfortable and no big deal.) My particular campsite was a bit dusty and would benefit from some wood chips that a different hipcamp at another location I visited spread out for just such a situation. The camp is quite remote (about an hour's drive through forest from Highway 101), which lent a nice atmosphere of remove, though it makes it a little more of a destination than a "stop-over" as the host mentioned to me--although I stayed for just one night as a "stop-over" on my way to the scenic attractions of redwoods nearby and was happy with it for that purpose. The remoteness also ensured virtually no sound of vehicular traffic (there's a road on the other side of the river, but I only saw and heard two vehicles pass during the course of an hour I peacefully spent at the river). It's good to know this resource is available to campers in Humboldt County; I was very happy to stay here for a night during the tourist season when many campgrounds and other options were fully booked. I recommend this place!

Otter Space Grotto River Camp
Late July Camping Trip
It was a quiet place. The river was nice. It was a little warmer during the day than it is when we camp at the coast, but the nights were very pleasant: Cool enough for a fire and a light jacket, but not too cold. It does rain there during the summer, so come prepared. The drive is a bit long, but the road is in good shape. Also, we took a jet boat trip up the river with Randy, one of the residents. It cost $150 but was well worth it!

Otter Space Blue Cottage
Our stay was magical. The only regret is that we had to pack up and get on the road! We stayed in the cottage, it had more than is needed for a comfortable stay. I never enjoyed making breakfast more than I did at Otter Space, there are these wonderful wooden plates and bowls, a propane stove with excellent burners, and vintage steel cookware (Paul Revere, anyone?). The nature is serene, luscious and has an instant transcendental effect. The hosts are a beautiful, hard working family. You can tell that so much thought and care is put into the entire setting. We enjoyed every minute so very much.

This place was MAGICAL! As others have noted, you'll want to dedicate two nights to this special place... Sadly, we only had one! The river is worth a full day in itself so pack a picnic and get ready to lay out and enjoy the surroundings! The drive is long and windy to get in but once you're there, everything is available to you. I'd love to come back to this beautiful, hidden gem again!

Destination!
What an amazing stay! The property was beautiful. We picked blackberries, swam in the river, watched the deer in the meadow, and more. It definitely is more than a place to just spend the night, so make sure you get there early and stay a few days. The hosts were wonderful and my kids enjoyed their kids. We are interested in coming back next summer with this place as our destination!

Otter Space Riverview Yurt
Perfect place for a family reunion
This was the absolute most perfect spot for a family reunion! 14 of us (ages 5-75) from all over California and Oregon met up at Otter Space. We stayed in the Yurt, tipi, blue and pumpkin cottages, and the upper barn. Our home base was the yurt as it was the perfect location to the river, large enough deck for all of us to eat our meals, and full kitchen to prepare food. Everyone in attendance loved Otter Space. We spent our mornings having coffee on the deck of the yurt or in our private accommodations (all equipped with stove and kettle); afternoons on the beach relaxing, floating or playing in the river, or fishing; evenings playing volleyball or other sports on the meadow (usually with the hosts kids who were sweet and friendly and overall fun to have around); and nights having bbqs at the yurt or bonfires on the beach. Things to note: 1. the hill from Otter Space to the river is quite steep - 2 folks in our group with mobility problems needed to be driven down but everyone else could walk just fine including the 5 year old. We drove our truck down to shuttle those that needed it but the hosts also generously offered to give rides when needed 2. the tipi is totally open on the bottom so we were visited by lots of bugs, a snake and frogs, so if you prefer to minimize wildlife sleeping with you then avoid the tipi, there are plenty of other options. I personally loved the tipi because it felt very rustic and remote and when my teenage freaked out from the bugs and went to the upper barn with his grandparents, I had the tipi all to myself which was perfect! Joe and Wendy and the kids are extremely helpful. They were always available if we needed anything but careful to give us privacy in our spaces. Prior to the trip I had tons of questions for Peter and he always responded immediately via email, text or phone. Overall I can't recommend Otter Space enough. Our entire group kept saying how lucky we were to find this gem, and we already talk about coming back!

Such a fun reunion!
We had a family reunion of 14 taking almost all of the buildings and tipi. Had a glorious time on the river and on the deck of the yurt! Everyone was happy with the rustic accommodations. Our stay in the upper barn was really comfortable. Very clean and basic, but exactly what we needed for our stay. Be warned: the road is bumpy and difficult if you’re in a loaded mini van with 6 adults and gear!

Otter Space Maple River Camp
Amazing location, wonderful time
I love camping and fishing, and this location was the best camping I have ever ever had. The hosts were amazing, and their children enjoyed playing with ours. There was fishing right on the Klamath, although the week we were there was not a good fishing week. They tell us that the salmon do run right through there. It is quite a drive, so make sure you have good tires and a car that can off-road a bit. It was perfect for a trip to the redwoods. Great privacy, but also all the amenities, including a warm shower! There are lots of trees for hammock camping, pleanty of space for a large tent (we use a Kingdom 6 and it fit with pleanty of room), and there is a rock firepit, although I would recommend bringing your own grill/camping stove and table. This was the perfect vacation. We will be back.

Take your Time getting There.
Very hard to get to for our Ford E150 camper van. It took us two hours to drive in and out. Other than that our little spot was a peaceful, rustic, dream. Little dear fed around us as we cooked our dinner. The shower was hot clean and they leave peppermint Dr. Bronner’s for you to use. A few other campers around that kept to themselves. I only say them from across the field. No one was close to us. Very cool place.

Otter Space Deer Meadow Camp
Wonderful remote oasis on the river
Had such a wonderful stay. The Dear Meadow site was a great site - lots of trees to keep the site shaded during the warmer hours of the day but still open enough where you can view the stars right from the campfire. Add on being within walking distance to the river, it was a treat! The hosts we're very accomodating and friendly. Driving instructions are clear and I would definitely take their recommendation seriously and arrive before dark. We navigated the winding road during the day and it's slow going, I imagine it would be very difficult to navigate at night. Then at the end of the winding road you're rewarded with a wonderful, quiet camping experience. Would definitely recommend staying for more than a night.
