Crosswinds Airport was built around 1959 by a pilot out of Santa Paulo Ca. named Joe Silvas.  He had such a fondness to the design of the hangars of Santa Paulo, so he was sure to build the one at Crosswinds Airport just the same.  Don Dench, a local teacher at the time who befriended Joe did the hard work of lining the runways and airport with tires to give it a good outline to all flying by.  Interestingly, Don was a teacher of the future owner of Crosswinds Mark Clemons. At some point Crosswinds was sold to another pilot and his wife. When they were not out flying their plane, they were manufacturing SIPS, structural insulated panels, in the hangar.  They not only manufactured the panels but used them in 9 custom home builds in the lower desert.  The metal frames laying near the dilapidated military building were used to manufacture these panels.  At a glance it looks like junk but when photographed (photo in gallery) it transforms into a piece of art.    In 2014 Crosswinds was sold to its current owner Mark Clemons.  Being a pilot himself and the grandson of one of the pioneering families of 29 Palms it was Marks dream to one day own the airport.   Though it is listed as a private airport we welcome fellow aviators to get in contact with us and plan a visit.  In the near future we will have a vehicle on sight for those who would like to fly in and explore our great town and outstanding Joshua Tree National Park. Learn more about this land: We are an operational dirt runway airport located on 78 acres of flat desert land in 29 Palms. Occasionally there are visitors that land for a quick stop, those that may be practicing take offs and landings and then those who like to just buzz on by to their destinations.  We also have tie downs for those who would like to fly in and camp.  Let us know in advance and we can supply additional information to accommodate your stay.  Located on the property is an airplane hangar and a dilapidated historical military building that was brought in by a previous owner.  The desert is filled with adventure seekers so expect occasional dirt bike riding and offroad vehicle action.   Being just east of 29 Palms means there is plenty of surrounding desert for walks, dirt bike riding and when the sun sets the best show begins. The night skies and the star show is one you won't soon forget. We are located minutes away from the east entrance of the Joshua Tree National Park.
