It is a beautiful site, had a chance to hang out with wild horses and deers. Felt the earthquake too, was a great time! Got connected to the nature, perfect spot for gateway! Site is very clean too.

I had such a nice time staying here. I was supposed to meet my husband for the weekend but his work schedule changed, so it ended up being a solo trip. It turned out to he a lovely spot for some quiet time, and I enjoyed drinking tea with the big window open and listening to birds and breezes. There were lots of thoughtful touches in the space and the property was beautiful and welcoming. I hope to stay here again sometime!

Cutest, most artisanal and affordable place to stay in Julian!
We didn't have time to ask how to get the stove to work.

A great spot to camp. Lots of deer and horses roaming around in the field. The view is great. The deck can fit one large tent, maybe two small ones. There’s a small flat spot just below the deck where you can put another tent. That’s about it though. It’s on the side of a hill so flat spots are hard to come by. The deck chairs were falling apart so bring some camp chairs. There’s no fires so you may want to bring something to keep you warm at night.

Property is seriously beautiful and wildlife is abundant. The deck was a perfect spot to enjoy sunset and sunrise. We had a very minor issue with arriving, and bathroom/water pipe was a bit further from camp than desired, but overall a positive experience.

My husband and I tent camp quite often. The amount of things we have to take for tent camping takes a lot of fun out of the experience. We loved our stay atThe DEER SHED ( cabin). Unsure what exactly to what to bring ,we realized that we over packed with too much unnecessary items. We were so surprised when we got there to see how much was provided. Towels for the shower, shampoo, conditioner, and dishes , pots and pans dish soap.The cabin had it all. It had a cozy down comforter and soft sheets. We loved the roll-up window. We watch dear, wild turkeys, and cows nearby. It was wonderful sitting there looking at the vineyard across the fence. Quiet, peaceful, relaxing and comfortable. The bank leading up to the cabin was a little steep for my knees, but manageable. We're hoping to be able to come back soon. We highly recommend THE DEER SHED. 👍👍

Julian Backcountry Retreat
Beautiful little getaway from our everyday lives. The view was magnificent! We watched wild turkeys fly through the meadow in the morning, and a few horses grazed in front of us in the evening. Was a beautiful secluded area and would definitely come stay here again.

The site is beautiful and we had a great stay. Like other reviewers have suggested, we set up our tent on the deck next to the yurt. We saw lots of animals - deer, horses, wild turkeys, and a fox. It was nice and shady in the evening and private. We did see another couple camping as we were coming in, but their site was down the road from ours at the Deer Hut. Bring your bug spray, there were mosquitoes and bugs throughout the evening. During the day the site have no shade cover. Consider bringing a shade structure or umbrella if you're staying more than one night, or plan to leave early and spend the day out and about. The porta potty at the parking spot was nice and clean, and we appreciated having it available.
The directions for parking were clear, but beyond that we were confused as to where to camp. There are no obvious flat areas to set up a tent. We looked up near the house and down at the lower parking spot. From past reviewers we were able to decipher that we had to walk down the dirt road from the parking spot until we got to the last yurt with the deck. To get there you'll pass a small cabin called Deer Hut and a yurt tucked into the trees, until you reach the second yurt with the open deck. It would be helpful if the host had a drawing or map of the property upon arrival.
A few minutes away is William Heise County Park. Such a great park and campground! It was $3 (cash or debit) for day-use access to the park. We used the picnic area and went on a hike with great views.

Julian Backcountry Retreat
The perfect sunrise spot! We stayed on the platform you see in the photos and it was really beautiful. Note that yurts are being built around the property (the platform is part of one of the under-construction yurts) so you'll see a few on your way to the site. I'll be sad to see that spot go when the yurt is finished :(

I stayed here for one night with a friend after visiting Anza-Borrego Park. We had a super great time and the property is beautiful! I wanted to clear up a few hazy details others mention in reviews and share a few photos. Hope this is helpful!
-Getting to the site is SIMPLE. Just drive all the way to the bottom of the dirt drive way and when it dead ends you're there!
-The platform has a vacant yurt attached to it. You pitch your tent right next to it. The ground is a steep incline so it is best to set up on the platform.
-The portable restroom is all the way at the beginning of the drive way. From this site it would take about 5 minutes walking up hill to get there or a car ride. We picked a spot by the site and went in nature since we were only there one night.
-We brought a Buddy propane heater to keep warm after the sun went down since campfires are not allowed.

This site is absolutely stunning.
I stayed here for a weekend getaway and absolutely loved this location. I set up camp on the deck pictured in the sites description and it did not disappoint. Wild turkeys and deer roam the grassy field which the deck overlooks it was a breathtaking sight to wake up to. I will definitely be back!

Julian Backcountry Retreat
The camping here was really a neat experience. Since we left after work on Friday we didn’t get to the property until after dark, but we were still able to find the deck pictured in photos from other guests. We chose to park at the bottom of the drive and opted for the valley view. The view we woke up to did not disappoint! It’s a little bit of a walk from the parking spot to the platform that was big enough for our tent, but not too bad. It looks like they’re in the process of expanding and building a series of small glamping cottages on the property, so we were a little confused as to where to set up our tent when we arrived. We assumed that since we found the wooden deck, chairs and hammock pictured by other guests that the deck was an appropriate place to set up, even though there was a new tent cottage being built adjacent. At any rate, it’s a great place with lots of privacy and a lovely morning view!

I had a really beautiful trip here. I arrived in time to join David and a friend in meditation. The property is really serene - super cool old train tracks that go thru the property.
There is a deck area at the back of the property where I set up my tent - there was a seating area and great view of the stars at night. Wild deer ran through the property often, just so many of them!
It's primitive and you'll have to go to the bathroom in nature, but it is private. There's a little bit of a walk to the camp site, not super far - just a heads up so you can try to bring everything in one or two trips down.

Great location close to Julian and all it has to offer. Lovely views from the property and beautiful night skies. Not much flat space for camping but David directed us to a great spot. The basic wild camping set up was perfect for us and we'd definitely stay here again.
