Nestled on 33 acres of coastal meadows and forest, Jug Handle Creek Nature Center is a peaceful, nature-centered campground with a rich history and a truly unique landscape. Saved from development in the 1970s, Jug Handle now stands as a thriving nonprofit sanctuary dedicated to education, restoration, and connection with the natural world. Just a five-minute walk from Jug Handle State Reserve, Jug Handle Beach, and the renowned Ecological Staircase Trail - a rare geological formation that reveals 500,000 years of coastal history - you’ll find yourself immersed in one of Mendocino County’s most remarkable environments. We offer 11 spacious campsites, each with two picnic tables, a fire ring, parking for two vehicles, and plenty of room for tents. Spread out across open meadows and forest edges, the sites offer privacy, quiet, and the soothing sounds of nature. Explore on-site nature trails, a native plant nursery, and beautiful woodlands, or simply relax beneath the stars. A few important things to note: Due to the close proximity of neighboring livestock, as well as the bountiful wildlife that call this special place home, PETS ARE NO LONGER PERMITTED on the premises. Firewood is not provided, though there are several roadside stands nearby where it is available for purchase. You'll be pretty independent here. We provide self-check-in for your convenience. Directions and access information (including the bathroom code!) will be messaged to you prior to your stay. Jug Handle is the perfect place to unplug. There is NO WIFI and LIMITED/NO CELL SERVICE. Weather and wind can kick up suddenly on the coast. It is your personal responsibility to be prepared and use caution. We reserve the right to ban campfires at any time. We reserve the right to close the campground at any time if conditions are unsafe. Site #3 - Grandma's Woods is in the midst of a Grand Fir Forest. It also borders our main meadow so you have access to both sun and shade. This is a tent camping only site! Not appropriate for trailers, campers, etc. as the parking area is small and on a slant. Nestled at the back of our 33 acre property, you'll find our beautiful and spacious 11 site campground. Indoor accommodations in our 1875 Victorian Farmhouse, Bunkhouse, Cabins and Cottages are available as well. Entire Campground Buyout Policy An Entire Campground Buyout reserves exclusive use of the campground for your group; however, it does NOT grant permission to host Special Events such as weddings, receptions, parties, reunions, certain retreats, or other organized events. Weddings and special events require a separate event package and prior approval. If you have questions, please contact our Guest Services Coordinator at [xxxxxxxx]. To preserve the peaceful nature of the campground, the following are considered elements of Special Events and are not permitted under a standard campground buyout reservation: Event tents, large canopies, or other temporary event structures Rental tables, chairs, dance floors, staging, or similar party equipment Outside catering or food-service vendors Amplified music, DJs, bands, PA systems, or sound equipment Event decor, wedding installations, or commercial event setups Any gathering involving ceremony setups, rented event equipment, catering, amplified music, or other event infrastructure requires a separate event contract and fees. #11 Large Sunny Group Campsite
We loved the expansiveness and myriad camp choices at the group site (grassy area, wooded area, etc). There were also a generous offering of tables, a prep kitchen area, and two fire rings. It's set apart enough from the other sites that we felt our group could socialize and play without bothering others, but were still close enough to the bathrooms (amazing bathrooms) for our convenience. We did have a significant skunk problem our last night after many folks had left and the trash had accumulated. Next time, I think we would designate a trash area further from our gathering areas and hope that would dissuade their interest.

Jug Handle Creek Hip Camp. Had another quiet visit at Jug Handle. It was a home base for our Mountain Biking and a sweet Albion River kayak paddle. Nearby camp sites were not full to capacity which made our time in camp very nice

Every year I camp with my family and spend the weekend hiking. We love the natural beauty and location of the Jug Handle. The new bathrooms are fantastic! My only critique is the noise level of the campground. Large groups of people partied to loud music, yelled at the top of their lungs, and road bikes throughout the campground ALL night EVERY night until the sun came up (no joke!). I met one of the campers in line at the bathroom and he told me it was a big birthday party at site 10. Great to celebrate one's birthday in such a stunning place but what about other campers who wish to rest at normal hours (10pm to 8am) and enjoy the sounds of birds not dumb music? It was like spring break unhinged college kids vibes. YIKES. There was no host to assist in honoring quiet hours.

I stayed here with my family on a road trip down the coast of CA. This was a beautiful place to stay with easy access to beautiful trails & a quick walk to a stunning beach. It was also ideal with a toddler because of all the room to run and play and amenities made camping with a 3-year-old much easier.

We were in site 2. Very nice, just as advertised. Nice trails. Beautiful pleasant beach about a 15 minute walk on the trail. Only issue is the bathroom code was not sent with our confirmation email. That email told us we would not have cell service and to write directions down on how to get there which we did. The same email, however, did not warn us that there would be an additional email coming with a bathroom code. Consequently, we drove to the site because we had written down all the information and then when we got there, on the bathroom door, it said to check your email for a bathroom code. Unfortunately, that was impossible to do because there’s no cell service there so we were without access to the bathroom all night. That was not fun. The next morning I had just enough cell service to download the additional email that had the bathroom code. Big recommendation: owners, when you send the first email confirmation, send the bathroom code with it or clearly specify that there will be an additional email coming with the bathroom code. Otherwise the site is exactly as described and was very nice and I would stop there again. The only other downside is the high fee that Hipcamp charges plus the taxes makes this more expensive than camping at a state park. That is a shame because this makes it a last choice instead of a first choice. If they would reduce their fees, this would make it less expensive than a state camp and this would be a first choice!

Jug Handle Campground is everything you hope for in a campground: level spots, great views, proximity to beach and trails, clean potties, of course, and this campground also has some really wonderful history. I won't spoil it for you, but take the trails, see the bridge and the beach, and read the signs. We need more places like this, protected, undeveloped.

It was a nice camp ground picnic bench fairly private with a camp fire circle . Close enough to the beach you can hear the seals at night or walk to the beach . The bathrooms were clean . The only negative is the lack of showers . Great spot .

The nicest campground I’ve ever stayed at! Bathroom facilities were spotless, well stocked, and cared for—running water, toilet paper, and hand soap. The outdoor sink for washing dishes was super convenient. Quiet, beautiful, and private, with a short trail to the beach and the ecological staircase hike. Highly recommend!

We loved site #10 and the very clean restrooms, fire pit and traditional picnic table. The site is a perfect size for our one car family with 3 preteens and a baby. We loved the walk to the beach and the elevated boardwalk through the woods. Met a skunk later at night who wandered through our site right by the fire, so beware of that, but he was a friendly little beast and just ambled along when I tossed a twig at it. Will definitely return!

#11 Large Sunny Group Campsite
This is our second time at Jug Handle! Our first time, we were at campsite #2. That was great. It was close to #1 but luckily no one rented that site. This time, we stayed at site #11 -- the large group one as we had 10 people total (apparently this site fits 30 people!). It was huge and open! Probably my favorite site there. It had 5 picnic tables, an outdoor kitchen, and so much space. The other campsites are pretty close to each other so having the big space felt more private, as we were able to put our tents furthest from the other campsites. I think even if we had a smaller group, I would still choose #11 for the privacy and the kitchen sink. Also, I dont remember the bathrooms being there last time we visited, but this time there were 2 bathrooms that were SUPER CLEAN and seemed new. I usually bring my own toilet because campground bathrooms are usually dirty and not maintained but these bathrooms were fantastic!

Perfect Camping Trip
#11 Large Sunny Group Campsite
Our whole family went camping and set up our tents at site #11. Soooo much room and open space for the kids to play. The hike to the beach is very nice and the beach! I can't say enough about the beauty of this location. Kids loved playing in the inlet water. I didn't worry about them going in the ocean. Only downside was getting information from Hip Camp on our email because there is little to no internet services. I never got my welcome email with the bathroom code. Thankfully a grounds keeper helped me. Other than that, our camping trip was a huge success.

Nice camp site with clean flushing toilets. It was quiet even though it was just off the highway. The camp sites are tucked further up the hill.

Very cool area! Stayed at site 5 and it was a great time! My setup is a rooftop tent on my truck which worked great at this site as the parking was part of the camp site, where a couple other sites you could not get a vehicle right next to the site. Overall had a great time and will definitely be returning!

#7 - Large Sunny Family Spot
Love Jughandle! Not too crowded with only 11, we'll spaced sites. Nice restrooms, close to town, beach access. It has it all (except power, wifi and showers) People are quiet and grateful we no longer have to deal with barking and out of control off leash dogs!
