Horseshoe Eco Farm Retreat was a creation I started 4 years ago when I moved here with my 4 kids to homestead and live rurally on a beautiful piece of land. My passion for gardening, building and living in harmony with the land led me to build up an extensive food forest using permaculture principles to work with the forces of nature. Because I love the beauty of working with natural materials I have been drawn to natural building techniques and have built various structures such as a cob oven, a cob/strawbale cabin and most recently a light straw/clay slip outdoor kitchen, bathroom and shower. Our farm is run on solar power. My other passion for herbal medicine and natural healing has led me to offer my services as a Massage Therapist and Ayurvedic counselor for those in need of healing. Horseshoe Eco Farm Retreat is a wonderful place to come and to enjoy the peaceful beauties of nature in the quiet countryside of Mendocino County.

Glamping in the oaks Horseshoe Farm
Hilariously Disastrous
This was a hilariously disastrous “glamping” experience. My husband and I are both experienced campers and now that we have a toddler are looking for easier camping set ups, accepting quite a bit of compromise on the ‘wilderness’ front for the convenience of a kitchen, bathroom, and shower. We chose Horseshoe Farms specifically for those reasons. The description says: "a fully supplied outdoor kitchen (includes mini fridge, 2 burner infrared stove, dishware, pot and pan). There is another central kitchen close by with a flush toilet and hot showers." There are also pictures up of a beautiful outdoor kitchen with pots, pans, and a basic sink with a faucet to wash dishes. Upon arrival we were surprised to find a very sparse kitchen with no pots, no cooking utensils, an electric stove, and a hose wrapped up in the corner. We were frustrated to find that all the appliances run through one surge protector so with the fridge, lights, and stove running, the power kept shutting off. We figured out if we unplugged the fridge while cooking, the power would stay on, annoying but workable. When the cozy propane heater failed the first morning we had to use the back up electric heater which you also can’t run at the same time as the stove. There also was the communal kitchen next door but we were hoping to mostly avoid it (especially with covid). We used the communal kitchen out of necessity but that first morning it was a mess, the trash was full, no cooking utensils, and nothing was in order. It was hard to tell what was to be used and what were personal belongings of the 2 full time tenants living on the property. We asked Tina if she had a pot and cooking utensils we could use and she was quick to attend to us. She clearly noticed the state of the kitchen and cleaned it that afternoon. The general feel was that this place had not been cared for in a long time. The platform under the tent is rotting and breaking. Any of these things alone would not be a big deal but all together it made it feel like a disaster waiting to happen... and then it did! Night 2 my husband was putting our baby to bed so I went up to the communal kitchen to wash a few dishes in the functional sink and a pipe under the sink exploded and flooded the whole building. This was the building with the only toilet and shower. Tina turned off the main water line and said she’d get a plumber in a few days (after we left) and until then we could have a bucket with water to flush the toilet. There was no hand-washing set up or hand sanitizer provided in the only bathroom (gross even without a global pandemic surging!). This place really could have a lot going for it, the property is beautiful, love the animals, and the little campsite could be really cool. We ended up leaving the morning after the plumbing exploded, a day early, and spoke to Tina about compensating us for our trouble. She was willing to refund us for the last night. All in all I would say we had a fun trip despite the accommodations and I would not recommend staying there. If you do go bring all of your own cookware, your own stove, possibly a heater, and be prepared for surprises.

This Horseshoe was lucky for us
We loved staying at Horseshoe Eco Farm Retreat. The tent was cozy and comfortable and the site was fully set up to make it easy to just drop in. The views and the terrain were splendid. It was a short hike down to the river and several swimming spots so no need to get in the car. I am seriously thinking of when we could go back for another stay.

Glamping in the oaks Horseshoe Farm
Tina's beautiful farm and property was the perfect retreat away from all of the holiday craziness of a more busy campground and we were able to enjoy not only having our own glamping area, but also the beautiful scenery surrounding it! Tina was also a great host and very responsive to our needs!
