Elk Country Resort and Campground stands out as a unique destination, nestled within nearly 200 acres of Northern California's breathtaking coastal landscape. This serene retreat features its own private lake, scenic hiking trails, and a year-round creek, all surrounded by majestic old-growth trees in a park-like setting that invites relaxation and adventure. Previously known as Redwood Lake Resort and Stone Lagoon Campground, Elk Country RV Resort is conveniently located along the renowned Redwood Highway (Hwy 101), just a short 35-minute drive south of Eureka, CA. Visitors can easily spot the local elk herd or the charming little Red School House and Barn nearby. The area offers a wealth of outdoor activities, including hiking, swimming, fishing, kayaking, canoeing, horseback riding, agate hunting, and bird watching—all within a quick five-minute drive from the resort. Plus, an awe-inspiring ocean beach is just one mile away. Home to a large herd of Roosevelt elk, the resort provides guests with the incredible opportunity to observe these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat, often seen grazing in the meadows and fields. With its stunning surroundings and abundant recreational options, Elk Country Resort and Campground is the perfect getaway for nature lovers and adventure seekers alike.

This campsite offers stunning views and a peaceful setting, with highlights like the presence of elk and proximity to the Redwoods. Visitors appreciate the privacy and natural surroundings, especially near the pond or forested areas. However, some campers have encountered issues with cleanliness, particularly in the bathrooms and showers, and the additional costs for amenities like WiFi and showers can be a drawback. The lack of responsiveness from the hosts and the occasional noisy neighbors might also detract from the experience for some.

019) Back In Forest SMALLER SITE UP TO 20'
Beautiful area and easy to find. Stayed for 2 nights in a truck camping set up. Only qualms were that the shower and wifi were add-on amenities, which was not clear in the listing. Wifi was $20 for 5gb in 48hrs, showers were $6 in quarters. Also host was not responsive on the Hipcamp app, likely only through the provided phone number as it is a larger RV park.

014) Back-In Forest
We originally booked spot 014 which is a beautiful location underneath trees and by a lake. But the site was very unlevel (by over 7”). Luckily I was able to speak to someone to change sites and I moved to the meadow side in 534. This site was much better and was almost perfectly level. There is plenty of space between sites to feel comfortable. The surrounding areas are breathtaking, and you are minutes away from beach access, forests, and the northern Redwoods. I highly recommend this location, aside from the unlevel site 014.

This is an established campground that appears to have been around for some time. Has several full-time residents. I was in the tent area with power to keep my battery generator charged. The site is small, but I sleep in my Jeep, so adequate for me, although I was the only camper in that area. Post Labor Day, so no crowd. I would not have liked it if it was full. Closest toilet was port-a-potties. Long walk to actually bathrooms and showers. Most obvious problem was the picnic table. It was so old, I thought it would collapse if I sat at it. Never saw a host. Office was lock when I checked mornings and evenings, though that's normal for most HipCamp locations I've been to. Don't think I would stay again.

The bathrooms were porta potties and there was animal poo everywhere. The bathrooms weren’t dirty. And you had to pay for the showers. Way too expensive. And there was no one to ask for directions.

The campground was covered in dog poop, had to watch every strep, and the bathrooms were absolutely disgusting with a few stalls overflowing in both men’s and women’s. There’s also a bathroom code that we were not informed about and had to wait for someone else to let us in. We left a day early on our two day stay. Site 78 specifically has zero privacy and is right up against the road so you hear e-bikes, scooters, and cars going by all day and late into the night, it kicks up quite a bit of dust.

Great hosts very friendly and all around beautiful camping location! This camping spot specifically that I got was perfect for my solo week long camping trip out in the redwoods. I stayed for one night and it was private enough to feel isolating with a great view of the lake and the lush green forest behind you!

This place is PERFECT. Quiet & less than 10 minutes from the closest redwoods visitor center. Water at every site and well-kept bathrooms. Even caught two packs of elk on my last morning there. There was no service at my site, but there is service in the parking lot where I was able to call my friends and family and load directions. My site was by a small lake and a creek, so prepare with bug spray because it got a little buggy at night. On the other hand, the running creek while falling asleep was heavenly (very subtle and soothing).

We adored our spots in the forest tent area with electricity. Spot 98 was especially great, very private at the end of the campground and still got plenty of sunlight which is much needed in this cool coastal area. A bit of a walk to the bathrooms but they put some porta potties nearby in case of emergency

This campsite was pretty loud, with a group of folk playing karaoke until late at night, and loud music until the early morning as they partied and drank. For all the extensive rules they make you sign and initial when you check in, it seems there’s no actual enforcement mechanism for any of them. Probably makes this a good spot to throw a party, not a great spot to enjoy a relaxing night in nature — so probably not a great destination for folks headed to nearby state and national parks.

The bathrooms were filthy. The showers were also dirty and coin operated. Our site was dirty with previous guests garbage in the fire pit and napkin and food wrappers throughout. There was an additional charge for WiFi, the free WiFi advertised was for a one time 30 minute period. Cell phone coverage was only available on or near the highway.

This is a large site set amongst the trees. I had a tent site with a stream behind me and a pond in front with a muskrat swimming about! I'm not a fan of big camp sites due to the fire pit smoke and the noise and the majority being made up of RV's. . But the tent sites were set up and above and around the road from the RV sites and were big enough and private enough that it turned out to be a great place to camp! PortaPotty's were well maintained and flush toilets could be accessed back down the road for those who prefer them.
