Pure magic. That’s what this site was to me and my partner staying in Big Sur with our two dogs. This property is like unlike anything else you can get at a campground. There’s communal areas to cook your food, wash your dishes in a sink (with warm water), enjoy a campfire, and each site has its own charm.
The property is first come first serve, and the sites aren’t labeled by any sort of numbers, but my partner and I were lucky enough to find a site with its own fire pit (closest to the entrance of the property). It’s more secluded than the others along the creek which was perfect for what we were looking for. It felt like our own little oasis!
There’s also a short walk from the property to the beach (look for the pile of rocks as you’re heading out of the property and follow that trail), where the creek that runs through the property feeds into the ocean. We stayed for 3 nights, and every morning we took our dogs to the beach and jumped into the cold creek! The most refreshing way to wake up.
And because the creek runs through the property, you get to fall asleep to frogs, crickets, and rushing water. I can’t recommend this property enough, we will definitely be back!

Beautiful spot! The cabana was pretty secluded from the other sites, and the whole grounds were in bloom. Loved the river running through and the path down to the beach. Parking was tight, but we were there on a busy weekend.

Very convenient spot. When we arrived people had to rearrange their cars to make room for us. Driveway is very overgrown and I recommend high clearance vehicles. Our SUV scraped the bottom a couple times and paint is scratched up from the bushes. For how much they charge you would thing the property would be better maintained so it would be easier for everyone to cram in

Let this be your sign to just book the dang thing. The entire property is absolutely gorgeous! Host was kind, the shower and shared kitchen were both super clutch, easy to locate and to get to.
One thing to note is the fire pits—they all were taken by families by the time we got back from our day hikes (it is stated clearly that the gazebo doesn’t have a fire pit and the fire pits are communal, however, they weren’t very communal. The ones we saw were located in the camp sites that were occupied by the families in those designated sites). Turned out we didn’t really need a fire bc we were so zonked after all the hiking anyway, but I’m sure we would’ve used it if they were more accessible. Secondly, watch out for poison oak, there were TONS up the trail up towards the gazebo — always bring your headlamp to make sure you don’t brush up against at night!

Such a nice and peaceful place to stay. Tucked away off of the main highway and exactly what we needed. The tent was very spacious and the site’s amenities such as a warm shower, clean water, and sink for dishes were great additions. I would stay here again

My girlfriend and I had a fantastic experience on Gene’s property. The land is gorgeous, we left feeling so grounded and reset. The family the lives on property are so kind. Different types of sites from big canvas tents, to gazebos with an ocean view, lovely tent sites surrounded by wildflowers, anything you could want. Communal kitchen was fun, we cooked with other travelers who were staying the weekend and made some new friends. Will be returning as soon as we can!

Gene’s place is nicely located on Highway 1. A bit tucked away from the highway, you’ll be just far enough to not hear the cars but enjoy ocean views and a very peaceful scenery. A rustic setup that’s got everything you need for a good camping experience.
Would definitely come back for another visit!

Gene's land and family are so beautiful! We had an incredible weekend stay on the property. So many amenities and much to discover. Great location with a short drive to Sand Dollar Beach and tons of trails. Really appreciated the communication and welcome on arrival. Would definitely stay here again! Very kid-friendly as well - my 2.5 year old love it there, especially the bikes, river, and chickens!

A really unique, very rustic Big Sur camping experience. We snagged a gorgeous secluded campsite right off the creek with a great view of the sunset. The site was a highlight of the trip. Hosts were friendly and helpful in our site selection
Note that amenities are offered but are minimal. There’s a shared kitchen area, and the toilets are basic compost setups (very rustic), so come prepared and know your comfort level.

As a single lady on her own I felt very safe camping here! I also drove from San Diego and planned to do all the Big Sur stops the second day - which worked out perfectly because this spot is located more south of many attractions — except jade beach, which is only 10 minutes south.
There’s literally everything you need to have a great time camping here. I chose one of the sites closer to the parking because I wanted to be by the creek- I could also see the ocean from my site.
The layout of everything could definitely be confusing.. best to arrive before dark. Some of the upper sites had really tall grass which prevented me from exploring up there too much.
The shower was so awesome! Didn’t try the kitchen because I brought my own stove just for my coffee - but on a longer trip I would have used it for sure.
Pit toilets at the day use area at the beach if you don’t like the poopers. Some of the state parks near by also have regular flush bathrooms.
I never met the host but I think it’s the family that lives there.

Absolutely fantastic campsite. Gene was very accommodating, gave me a layout of all the places where we could camp, and even provided me with firewood and a lighter! Really cute kitchen area, fully furnished with a stove, kettle, pans, utensils and cutting knives , bowls and plates; anything you could ever need. The shower is in very good shape as well. I was very surprised at the quality of the campground. It was the gift that kept on giving. 10/10 recommend!
