Hidden Oaks
We had Hidden Oaks reserved, but once we got there we thought Hold Your Horses looked more secluded and private! We asked the host if we could switch since it was the same price and it wasn’t booked, and he kindly let us move! The stay was beautiful- unbelievably hot but the lake was a lifesaver. We had a great time and will be returning someday!

The 2 ladies and 1 gentleman who were there helping host during our stay were very kind and involved us in lots of fun things for the kids, including visits with the horses, cow, chickens, and bunnies. I was surprised to learn upon arrival that the bathrooms were at the entrance of the property (only 2, and one went out while we were there) and not at our site like it seemed to advertise, so we had to time our trips to the toilet for #2. We also were not clearly explained the trail to the lake so we trudged through a barbed wire fence and prickly brush the first day. Going in early June, everything was very dry and we constantly battled stickers. The tree at our site did not provide much shade. Since we were the last camp site on the grounds, we had a surprising amount of people showing up at random times and get out of their car and talk to us. This wasn't ideal as our "potty" was squatting by a tree or car with very little privacy in a setting that was flat and open, very much a horse pasture.

This site was amazing!! The walk to the bathroom isn’t half bad (and the bathroom was extremely clean!!), it was pretty secluded and not far from the lake! Will definitely be coming back to this amazing place! Super cool to see the animals and give them a few treats and bonus points for the sweet ranch dog Kyro!

Wow this place is breathtaking. Incredible views, an hour away from civilization and some very welcoming and friendly staff.
We took advantage of the trails, lake swimming and general camping fun. The crew also brought over their horses for us to pet and one night their guard dog came over to enjoy our company and get some ear scratches.
Sadly there was a fire ban, so no campfire.
Must know:
-the directions sent are so detailed. Follow them and you shouldn’t get lost (like we did). We also found a hand painted sign by the restrooms that had a helpful map of each campsite.
-plan your bathroom trips. Yea there is a flush toilet. But it was a bit of a walk from our site (3-5 minute) and there was only one toilet since the second had an out of order sign.
-double check supplies and gear because you are pretty far from stores/gas stations.
We learned later the crew offers trail rides with the horses, there are geese, rabbits, chickens, dogs, cat, the whole McDonald song to check out, and really friendly people that work here. Every interaction started and ended with huge smiles and they were so helpful.
Oh!! And most importantly, they were SO fast with digital questions. Within 5 minutes there was a detailed and clear answer to any and every question we had before and during our trip.
If you come here, you won’t regret it and we cannot wait for our next trip here!

Can't recommend this spot. My family and I booked for 2 nights but ended up leaving after one night as soon as we got up.
There were a few problems:
-the biggest issue was significant horse poop all over the campsite. Looking back, I realize that the other reviews saying "the horses came right up to the campsite!" imply this, but I didn't realize. FYI. Lots of Poop. Everywhere.
-we were left waiting at the locked gate for almost an hour. The instructions are to "text for a gate code when you arrive". I wish we had texted when we started driving there so that we could have gone right in when we arrived. We arrived around 7pm but didn't get a code until 8 (tried calling, texting, using the HipCamp app) and ended up setting up our tent in the semi-dark.
-there was a giant dog who visited our site a few times and never failed to pee on something - our tent, a camping chair, etc. I like dogs but this was a little gross! The campsite is listed as "pet-friendly" and we originally planned to bring our dog but I'm really glad we didn't, I think things would have gotten territorial pretty quickly.
All that said, the ranch location is extremely beautiful. We were very secluded from the hosts and any other campers. It was mostly very peaceful and quiet at night. This specific site is closest to the animals - the other sites don't seem to have the same poop issue. So, I think one of the other locations (NOT SAVANNAH OAK) could be a nice spot for a camping trip.

It was a great spot to camp, with cute wildlife and nicely spaced-out campsites. The only downside is that the campground is set on a hill, so there's a lot of walking up and down—even just getting around your own site or heading to the lake. Additionally the Moonlight Oaks camp is covered in fine red dirt that got everywhere. The campsite itself was well-shaded, and they provided trash cans, which was convenient. There's a bathroom at the top of the property that's in good condition. As for the lake, the access point is more of a runoff area with a muddy shoreline, but still a fun little place to swim.

Site is very remote and primitive. No water. No place to dump garbage. Lake Access is a drive to a parking area. Portable toilets (2) are located outside of the camping area near where the property owners live. Road was very poor both on private road to the ranch as well as Rattlesnake Bar Road and Hwy 49 to Auburn. Nothing worth stopping for before Auburn or Placerville. Directions are difficult- driving back to campsite at night is very difficult and can be hazardous. Lanes are barely wide enough for one vehicle in places, roads are sharp winding and no guard rail on blind turns with cliff dropoff in many spots. Horses do not come to your campsite as suggested on website. Not as expected from photos.

This was me and my partner’s first time camping—and we brought three kids along for the ride. We weren’t sure what to expect, but what we found was something special.
The farm was full of charm and life—goats, horses, chickens, bunnies, and even friendly dogs wandering by to say hi. Our siblings had the time of their lives feeding animals and running free. The lake was calm and beautiful, perfect after a hot day. The people we met—campers and workers alike—were warm, welcoming, and always ready with a wave or a smile.
Of course, things didn’t go perfectly. We had a little mix-up with our water refill, got a little lost coming back into camp , and one of the kids had an… urgent trail moment. But honestly? Even those parts brought us closer. It felt like real-life magic—messy, funny, loving, and full of heart.
This place brought our blended family together in a way we didn’t expect. We left with stories, laughter, stronger bonds… and a few bug bites to remember it by. We’ll definitely be back—maybe just us next time… or maybe the whole circus again.

The drive to the ranch is pretty windy and challenging. The lake is really gross - filled with algae and duck poop. We felt so gross after jumping in that we left instead of staying the night.

This secluded cite was a gorgeous getaway from the city. The overlook over folsom lake is nothing short of stunning both at night and during the day. The cite owners were very helpful in providing directions to get into our spot even though we were getting in relatively late at night (about 11pm). I would 10/10 recommend camping here and will be saving this spot to come back to again someday!!

Hidden Oaks
We came in a small RV. Some parts of the dirt road can feel a little iffy but very doable.
Access to the water was perfect. We brought iSUPs and a wagon to get everything to the water and inflated there. The cove was perfect with minimal boaters.
We slept outside under the stars the first night and were checked in on by the sweetest dog. All the neighboring campers were just as happy to be there. It was a perfect get away.

This is a very cool place. Our campsite was impressively spacious. The hosts were responsive and helpful through the app.
The two guardian dogs are absolute angels and spent a lot of time at our site, which we loved. All the other animal life, both domestic and wild, was fun to see in this environment. The lake is a short walk and felt great for a swim! Bathroom is a little ways away from the site, but impeccably clean.
Just a couple things to note. There is a very active ecosystem there, which was great to see BUT watch where you step — we encountered a wolf spider on our table and a young rattlesnake under our tent. Both manageable, but good to be aware. Also, our specific site also said it had potable water, but all we could find was a livestock water trough that wasn’t turned on. It was 110° the weekend we went (we knew what we were getting into), so if we hadn’t brought our own water we would have been in some trouble.
We also chose this place partly because they advertise recreation such as archery, but were not clear that you need to bring your own targets. They do allow it on the property, but you need to bring everything yourself including targets. We brought our bows but ended up feeling a little misled by the wording of the post.
Those things aside, we do hope to come back for another visit. We had a blast and appreciate our gracious hosts for sharing their ranch with us. Definitely recommend, just come prepared.

The campsite was in a beautiful location with plenty of room for our 7 tents and 15 people. The lake was a short walk (10 mins) and refreshing after a hiking. There were several other camping sites nearby but it was so quiet and private.
That being said, the bathroom was very far away. Too far from this campsite to walk so we ended up driving a lot. Only one of the two bathrooms was operational. Also, there was stinging nettle everywhere. We worked around but had to wear hiking shoes and socks to go anywhere on the property.

Hidden Oaks
I’ll start by saying that the hosts did their best to make it right and accommodate us. We still had a great time, but it was a rough start. We had a group of 10 with 4 dogs and 3 kids. The listing says Hidden Oaks sleeps up to 20 people. After driving around for over 30 minutes trying to find the site (not marked) and get in touch for help, we were finally able to find it with some directions from the hosts. The site itself can accommodate a family of 4 at best. At first, they tried to have us just pitch tents in the parking area at the site. Luckily there is a lot of land and they were kind enough to weed whack some space nearby so that our families could set up camp. The lake is a bit farther than expected, but walkable enough and we ended up having a great time on the water. I don’t think I would go back to this particular campground, but very thankful they helped make things work for us.

Our group had a fantastic time at the Meadow campground. It was super clean and convenient. A short walk to the bathrooms/potable water and a short hike to the lake. The farm dogs, Cairo and Anna, were quite possibly the highlight of the trip. Cairo made his rounds to check on everyone at the campground each night and Anna hung out with us all weekend trying to maximize her belly rub time. Overall this was a fantastic campground and look forward to coming back eventually!

Oak Savannah was a great spot - very secluded and still relatively close to the lake. Two friendly dogs hung out at our campsite for most of the trip, which was fun during the day. The only downside was that they barked and howled a lot at night, which made it a bit tough to sleep. Still, I’d definitely go back and would love to try out some of the other campsites too.

The ride in was very scenic. The place itself remote. Had a relaxing night.
Only drawback is that i cant download the Hipcamper app. So there was a small hiccup at the gate. But thats not on Ascention.
Id def recommend of you like rural but not too rural. Perfect for familys.

Hidden Oaks
We stayed at Hidden Oaks at Ascension Ranch and had a wonderful time! The meadow was so pretty with beautiful horse and the working dogs running around. The lake access was easy to drive to (and very walkable) and from there a 3 minute walk to the lake. Checking in was so easy, the site had a picnic table and a pit for a campfire, and good shade. I would definitely recommend this spot and would totally go back again one day!

This was our 2nd stay here this month ! We are in love the horses came right up to us and we so sweet to our kids it’s so beautiful bring bug spray for sure but besides that it’s amazing we took the trail to the lake and the kids absolutely loved it they wanted to stay all day we had the best Easter weekend ever here as a family thank you guys again we will be back !!

Hold your HORSES!
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay it was very laid back easy to find you can buy firewood there in person with cash they have farm animals at the entrance it’s pretty spacious we hardly saw our neighbors it’s so pretty and feels so secure because it’s someone property and not just a camp site they have flushing toilets at the entrance and trash cans at each site it looked like which was very nice we had a huge picnic table and a fire ring and some logs to sit on at the hold your horses site my daughter is 3 and can’t stop talking about camping now we will definitely be back!

Not for us. We had to leave due to the farm dogs presence. We have to keep our 1.5 year old pup on a leash out of respect for the property, we wouldn’t went him running in the cow area unexpectedly. You can’t introduce a leashed dog and two unleashed dogs. The farm dogs camp out in your camp.
The lake is nice but you need chairs to sit. Lots of plants and tall grass.
Narrow winding road to the property. Bring all water and supplies.

The painted animals on the trash cans are super cute. Host checked in via text, he was away while we were there. It was fine because I go camping to hermit. We booked this campsite to try out backpacking gear we borrowed from our friends. This was a nice base and there's lots of good trails nearby. I now know I don't like backpacking .
I really enjoyed this campsite, it was very private feeling and well cared for. I'm looking forward to coming back with our regular set up.

This was my first solo camping trip and first camping in Cali (I grew up camping a lot in Washington with family but it’s been years) so I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. It absolutely POURED rain while I was there, I thought I had a flat, and I wasn’t fully prepared for the rain or food so I was STRESSED. But let me tell you - it was one of the best trips I’ve had. The pictures don’t do justice. It was so stunning there and is an absolute gem of a site. I was kept company by so many creatures - dogs and cats and horses and chickens and goats and cow were absolutely treasures. The dogs cats and horses are so friendly and felt like forest guardians walking us to the bathroom, watching over us at night and taking afternoon naps with us intermittently. They didn’t say they were an animal haven but it felt like a paradise. The pair of horses roaming and eating were so dreamy and moving to see. Other campers were so nice and we had so much space that it felt really perfect for peace and optional interaction. I came to reconnect with myself and my dog and nature and figure out some hard life questions and it was just beyond perfect. I read and breathed and just existed - and it felt more okay to be that way, and just pace to the sun and basic needs than I’ve felt in years. The wind and sunshine and meadows were an absolute dream, (it smelled green and whole) and I’m already missing being there. They were also responsive to needs!
