The Town of Chicken stands out as a unique destination due to its rich mining history and the remnants of its gold rush era. Established in 1886, a decade prior to the Klondike Gold Rush, Chicken emerged as a vibrant community following the discovery of gold on Franklin Creek. At its peak, Chicken was home to approximately 400 residents, but today, its population fluctuates between 50 in the summer and just 4 during the harsh winter months. Despite this decline, miners continue to work the surrounding hills, searching for that elusive pay streak. While many utilize suction dredges, a handful of dedicated placer miners still operate their claims in the area. Visitors can explore the remnants of massive dredges that were operational until the mid-1960s, left behind by the F.E. Gold Company. A short hike from the Taylor Highway leads to a stunning viewpoint where the Cowden Dredge, a steam-driven relic, rests abandoned on the Mosquito Fork. For those seeking more information on local attractions and how to reach these historical sites, a visit to the Goldpanner is highly recommended.
