Wine Trail Wilderness is located in the heart of the Shawnee National Forest in Southern Illinois. It is actually part of the Ozarks, but in Illinois! We are conveniently situated between a couple of the finest wineries on the Shawnee Hills Wine Trail. Hickory Ridge Winery is only a quarter mile South and Pomona Winery is North about a half mile. On April 8th, 2024 we will once again be on the path of totality for the Solar Eclipse ... a wonderfully surreal experience. We have 37 acres of forest and open field to camp right off Hickory Ridge Road near the "town" of Pomona, Illinois. Little Grand Canyon, Snake Road at La Rue Pine Hills, Pomona Natural Bridge and Oakwood Bottoms are close by for hiking. There are 9 other wineries on the Shawnee Hills Wine Trail as well. Five of those wineries are within 10-15 minutes of the Wine Trail Wilderness campsite. This is a great place to relax, unwind, share a bottle of wine and totally decompress. At night, enjoy stargazing along with a peaceful crackling campfire. The Mississippi River is only 8 miles away and we enjoy lots of migratory birds, making it a great area for bird-watching.We're happy to say that we've been voted Number One Hipcamp in Illinois two years in a row! Forbes magazine also included us in their list of top Hipcamps to camp out. We'd love to have you come out and experience Southern Illinois wine country!

If you stayed here and have some insider info for us, let us know!
We had a wonderful stay at Wine Trail Wilderness. Jon greeted us when we arrived and we rode in his ATV with his two dogs to check out possible sites for our 29-foot travel trailer. We decided to park beside the gazebo as that provided us with the easiest egress. We were also able to hook up to 15-amp electricity there. It would be difficult to get a larger RV in any of the spots. The sites are best for tent campers or camping vans/small RVs.
The night before it had rained heavily, so the grass was soft. Our usual Anderson levelers sunk into the ground and were useless. So Jon nicely provided us with two pieces of wood to put under our tires. He stayed with us and chatted with us until we were set up. We were able to level side-to-side but couldn’t quite level front-to-back.
The first night it poured rain and was very windy. However, the night day was lovely. That evening we had a nice fire in the fire pit with firewood we purchased from Jon. We heard coyotes howling in the distance. There were two tent campers as well, but they were quite some distance from us, so they didn’t disturb us. Jon stopped by while we were sitting by the fire to check on us. He is very friendly and wants to make sure his guests are satisfied with their camping experience.
We would definitely recommend Wine Trail Wilderness!
Wine trail wilderness camping
Jon's Wine Trail Wilderness is a lovely camping spot well positioned within a quarter of a mile from Hickory Ridge Winery. The camp sites afford plenty of privacy, had good seating, drinking water and firewood. The compost toilets were very clean and convenient. Jon was a great host from start to finish, and I look forward to my next outing there.
This place and Jon were great! Great communication especially considering we were nervous about there getting there in the dark without service. He led us to our site ahead of us in his atv and had 5 gallons of cold water, dry firewood, and a firewood pyramid in the firepit set up for us. In the morning, he brought us some more firewood (make sure you bring cash) and checked on us and gave us great advice for a day of hiking and wine trails. Definitely recommend!
Couldn’t have asked for a better camping experience! Jon and his family are so kind/welcoming and provided everything I needed and more for an easy night of camping after a long day of driving. Since I was just stopping through on a long road trip I didn’t have much time to explore the area, but I got a taste of it and it’s lovely. Thanks a bunch, Jon!
We had a wonderful time staying at Jon's Hipcamp. Jon was an outstanding host, provided lots of information and set our site up wonderfully. Being so close to two wineries was alot of fun and we very much enjoyed our stay. We would definitely stay with Jon again, thank you!!
So nice we’ve been twice
Great time, once again. The land is beautiful and the people are friendly. Jon is a wonderful host. If you like hiking and/or drinking wine, this is the spot!
I had a great two nights at WTW, with a well-maintained site, water, table, and firewood. Sites are very spread out for privacy and quiet, and the field is a great place to watch the stars come out at night. There's plenty to explore with kayaking, hiking, wineries, and breweries nearby, so I'm sure I'll be back!
