Choose your own camping spot out in the prairie! As previously mentioned, depending on when you stay, you will be greeted by a host of flowering plants and natural vegetation. On clear nights you can see the milky way arching across the sky, shooting stars, and the moon which lights up the prairie. Lightning bugs dazzle by the thousands in June and July, the coyotes sing at night, and the roosters crow at dawn. Mowed trails are available to explore the prairie and more privacy is felt when you set up camp in the prairie among the plants and trees, though you are welcome to set up where you feel comfortable. Nearby, enjoy fishing, kayaking, canoeing, exploring local canals and the famous Mississippi River. We have many great nearby breweries, farmers markets, a children's museum, excellent coffee shops, and delicious local foods. Stay for a while, or just to pass through. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to send a message!
Enjoy time on my small flower farm and prairie of 14 acres located nearby the Rock River and Hennepin Canal trailway. There are trails mowed throughout the prairie for you to wander about in as well as little areas for you to choose your own campsite with small trees that are big enough to feel nestled in privacy depending on where you decide to camp.
The farm features many flower beds that are still growing and small at the moment in June, but depending on when you stay you may be met by hundreds of sunflowers, lilies blooming in late June/beginning of July, zinnias, and hundreds of dahlias come late August and early September. The farm also features many marigolds, indigo, coreopsis flowers, and other crops planted especially for dyeing fabrics with natural plants. And if I have the time and I am home, I would be happy to show you around and encourage your exploration of these natural beauties. Additionally, in September, there are acres of goldenrod blooming which I lovingly refer to as my sea of gold. These plants are also used for natural dyes that would capture your heart and eyes. Depending on the season you will also have access to plucking fresh blackberries from the cane, apples from trees, and juicy fat pears as well.
I honor your privacy and desire to be in nature and so I will leave you to yourself - though you are free to ask me any questions or make any needs known. At this point in time of posting you are welcome to use the indoor main house bathroom and shower, and as the summer goes on, I hope to have an outdoor bathtub/shower for you to use and outside portapotty.
Also in the works are cozy barn quarters which look out onto the sunrise back pasture of sheep and goats. Depending on the time of your stay you may have access to this if interested!
Espresso machine flows hot pours - just ask if you would like a cup! There is an outdoor grill or you are free to bring your own propane camping cook units, coolers, etc. A fire pit is accessible for use on low-fire risk days.
A disclaimer on animal allergies and animal safety: There are outside cats who live here and will love on you if given the chance. I also have a 16-year old black lab mix, Bo. Chickens are free range and roam the property but not typically deep into the prairie. There are two small breed goats and one black Shetland sheep who are kept in their own pastures. You are free to visit with them but please keep hands free from between the animals and fence as an extra safety to yourself and fellow travelers.
Please also understand that this is a farm and you stay at your own risk and I will not be held responsible for behaviors warned against or negligent behavior on your part. I am open and welcoming and just want you to be safe and have fun, delighting in the world and this gift of a prairie as you make your way in your travels! I am here to try and aid in you having the experience you would like and to help be hospitable in any way that I can. Please note that the mosquitoes can get intense out here especially based on rainfall, so be sure to pack appropriate clothes and bug spray to assist in your comfort.
Nearby, you will also find campgrounds which rent out kayaks and canoes for exploration of the Hennepin Canal. I am located nearby the Quad Cities at large and so there are many great restaurants, breweries, farmers markets, Mississippi River trails and delights, and so much more to explore in our area.
As Illinois is a cannabis friendly state, the farm is also cannabis friendly; but please abstain use of or bringing other controlled and illegal substances during your stay.
Hope to see you soon! Blessings on your travels!
