Rancho Del Comienzo is located at the intersection of Somonauk Creek and the Fox River. 150+ years ago, it was a commonly used Native American encampment. Now it is the site fo Rancho Del Comienzo Hay and Horses. We ask that if you find an arrowhead that you respect the land and leave it where it lays.
The Fox River is known for catfishing, small mouth fishing, and boating/paddling. There is access to both the Fox River and Somonauk Creek for kayaking, canoeing, fishing and other water-activities!

So awesome. Loved it. Nice and clean, (keep it that way people!), hospitable hosts, no bugs really bothered me despite being paranoid from the one review that mentioned ticks, just beautiful!
Be prepared to walk through a tall grass prairie, It was a bit of a walk to campsite from car with all of our belongings, other than that, it was great.
We had an awesome stay here. I was taking my girlfriend (city girl from Chicago) for a trial camping run. Caught her looking at camping gear websites on her phone the day after, so we will be returning.
The river and property were beautiful. It was insane to see a sky so full of stars so close to the city (1.5 hr drive), we even saw multiple shooting stars.
10/10 go on a staycation.
Nice night on the river. Very relaxing on a clear night you will see shooting stars ⭐
We really enjoyed a weekend of group camping by the river here! We celebrated a big birthday and appreciated being able to bring more than 8 people—the hosts were kindly accommodating with easy and clear communication.
The walk to the site was definitely long but manageable with the cart we brought. It would have been much easier if the grass were more recently mowed (it was mid-calf length), however this was our only concern/complaint all weekend. Everything else was perfect!
There is currently much more brush/overgrowth behind the fire ring/camp area compared to the posted photos, and we loved this because it felt very private. There were a lot of tubers floating on the water Saturday and Sunday but we never felt exposed at all because of the setting. The views inland look over a field with woods behind and are lovely. Lots of wildflowers, birds and birdsongs. You can’t really see the horses or the main buildings from the campsite. There are definitely also lots of ticks, so recommend to plan accordingly with good repellent!
Thank you to our hosts for a great camping weekend!!
Beautiful location and very responsive, friendly hosts. Pack light - its a bit of a haul to the site - but well worth it!
I would give a great review. The campsite is gorgeous. Downside it's a half mile hike both ways to the campsite. So with your gear if you have to take multiple trips it's quite a hike and can be very inconvenient. Also they do not bring the canoe to the river. If you rent the canoe you have to carry the canoe a half mile both ways to the campsite. Other than that it was a great time.
The location we stayed at was beautiful and scenic, a path back to nature. Just be careful not to bring to much, because it's a nice hike back to your vehicle. Our host was gracious and accommodating.
One of the best campsite i been to, i will come back again and again for sure.
