We had a wonderful time in the cabana. Amazing place, beautiful landscape. I was a bit scared about sleeping in a hammock but I sept like a baby. 10/10
Great hostel vibe! We met greet people and live the walk to the waterfall. Kitchen space was clean and well stocked. Hammock sleeping might not be for everyone, but we enjoyed. It was magic to fall asleep to the sound of frogs and rain.
We stayed in a cabana at Hamakua House for 1 night during a rainstorm and it was magical! The sounds of the rainforest were so relaxing during the night. The hammocks were comfy and all the amenities you need are provided. If you’re looking for a little off grid island experience, this is it! We can’t wait to come back.
I cannot say enough about staying at these cabanas, and the magic that surrounds them. I've travelled quite a bit throughout the US using hipcamp and air bnb and Mathew's place is worth coming to the big island in of itself. The people were so welcoming, the secluded waterfall was beyond enchanting, and the cabana itself has inspired me to attempt to create something similar back home...although my version will pale in comparison. If you are coming to the big island for any period of time, this is a destination in of itself.
Great location, great structure, nice people!! And as a bonus you get to enjoy a magical and private water fall down the road. Truly amazing!! The bathrooms and kitchen are well taken care of and everything has a sign so you don't get lost. I would definitely return to this spot!

I loved everything about our stay. Listening to the rain curled up in a comfy hammock. Looking up at the moon and sea at midnight. Swimming in the amazing waterfall in the morning after breakfast. Meeting other interesting and friendly travelers in the common area. The cats were cute too, especially Cuddles. 1000% will stay again.
While the cabana itself was cozy, provided a lovely glamping spot in the Hilo rainforest, and had unbelievable views (sunrise from the hammock was a huge highlight), I can’t in good faith recommend this stay.
We selected our accommodations this trip based on COVID protocols and although this was marked as adhering to them, I’m not sure what those were. Not only was no one masking or distancing in shared indoor spaces (which we luckily managed to avoid due to the shared fridge being full of rotten food, so we used our cooler outside instead), but my husband was vibed for wearing his mask when going into the shared space when we arrived.
Travelers should be definitely be aware that there is a hostel in addition to the cabanas, so prepare for that feel also. While our cabana was clean, the kitchen spaces were filthy, and after cooking there one night (being swarmed by feral cats, one of which took a swipe at my husband’s foot) we ate the rest of our meals away. In fact, we stayed away pretty much except to sleep as there were not any weather conducive, non-indoor hangout spaces.
There were a few smokers on premises and while the semi-outdoor shower should’ve been a perk, even at 6:45 am we were breathing in secondhand smoke while trying to get clean. Other guests weren’t very friendly and didn’t even seem to care when we asked around about a light on in someone’s truck.
We do a lot of camping (and also have stayed in many hostels in the past) and wanted to love this spot so much, but left very disappointed.
I had such a fantastic stay in the hammock cabana! The views were amazing and the facilities were perfect for the stay. Nearby to lots of attractions and hikes. It was the perfect, relaxing getaway spot. Already planning my next stay!

Worth every penny. The waterfall alone was incredible. Thanks so much!
