If you’re starting in Minnesota, drive from Duluth and up the North Shore toward Canada. The snowmelt brings a series of waterfalls to life in April and May. At Split Rock State Park, you can camp near a historic lighthouse and bike the Gitchi-Gami State Trail. Near Grand Marais, watch surfers navigate enormous waves in the November gales.

If islands are your thing, Lake Superior has you covered. Glide over crystal-clear waters and under tree-covered cliffs in the Apostle Islands in Wisconsin. In the winter, you can walk across the frozen lake to sparkling ice caves. Or, hop a seaplane or boat to the remote Isle Royale National Park. Here, a stunning trail network takes you over rocky ridges to backcountry campsites.

For some serious small-town friendliness, head for Copper Harbor in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. From your Lake Superior campsite, you’re moments from a killer network of mountain biking and hiking trails. In the fall, the changing leaves rival the East Coast for grandeur (bonus: no crowds). Winter brings cross-country skiing and snowboarding—nearby Mount Bohemia has the highest vertical drop in the Midwest.

Summer is the best time for camping on Lake Superior. Take advantage of the sunny days to paddle Pictured Rocks or see the raging Tahquamenon Falls in Michigan. Fall and spring bring crisp temperatures and low crowd levels.

The intense Lake Superior winters aren’t for the faint of heart. If you have a warm sleeping bag or an RV, however, the cold is worthwhile. Spend your days cross-country skiing, snowboarding, and ice fishing. Then, pop into a local brewery to have a pint with the hardy locals.

We were married in 2016 and have four children as part of our blended family. We are both originally from the Upper Peninsula. Superior Times Resort and Campground was the result of us wanting to do something “outside of the box” that would allow us to raise our family and show them there is more out there than the traditional path. We also wanted showcase our love and respect for the beauty of the Upper Peninsula; the area that many refer to as “God’s Country.” In December of 2016, we mistakenly pulled into the driveway of this property. At that time, it was known as Coleman’s Paradise Resort. There was a For Sale sign marking the property. We both knew at that point our fate was sealed to become this property’s new owners. We learned that this property had been a family vacation destination for nearly 100 years. We could only imagine the special memories that had been made here over the years! We wanted to become a part of that deep history. Through the many years of the resort’s history, the owners had changed and the cabins were showing true signs of their age. We knew there was A LOT of work that simply had to be done. On a wing and prayer, we somehow made this great resort ours. In April of 2017, we opened what we named Superior Times Resort and Campground. We pulled up or sleeves and went to work! We are 7 miles from downtown Marquette, 8 miles from the shores of beautiful Lake Superior and 53 miles from Pictured Rocks National Park. We are about 4 miles off of US 41 nestled in a quiet forest like setting. We built our home here in 2019 and are continually making improvements to the land. We tap our trees for maple syrup in the spring-you will drive by our "sugar shack" and raise chickens in our very nice coop -no roosters to awaken you! Come and enjoy some peace and quiet at our Northern Oasis! There is guest internet but its patchy in camping area-better closer to the house and large firepit area There is a charcoal grill near communal firepit area. We are near 2 river basins(McClure Basin and Dead River Basin) for fishing, swimming and boating ( kayaks and canoe for rent on this site-see extras! ) We are on the route of the Ore to Shore Mountain Bike epic and not far from the North Country Trail. We have options of open sites and a couple more private wooded sites. There are at least two areas for small campers and several choices for tents and/or hammocks.. There is a communal/central fire pit, picnic table area as well as a larger fire pit with picnic table closer to house. We have nice fire wood available on site -see "extras" or for purchase when you get here! There are yard games, extra chairs and a small table in the red shed. This can also be used as a storm shelter if needed! There is a "port-a-john" on site- extra TP is kept in red shed hanging on nail in a bag. Please let us know if this needs attention.

Hello friends! Thanks for your interest in Balsam Ridge Retreat! Many folks that have visited our place refer to it as 'country living in the city'. We are so blessed to live in this little piece of serenity just inside the city limits of Duluth. Our home was once an abandoned house that sat for years until a friend mentioned to us that it might be going up for sale. We loved the location and rolled up our sleeves. Twenty years later we still marvel at the beauty around us and can hardly believe that we LIVE here! Just down the road is a trout stream and beyond that was a popular farm that attracted many folks to this neighborhood for hay rides and sleigh rides. The farm has since retired its horses and closed its doors to make room for new homes, but memories live on in the beauty of the open fields. I often imagine the sound of horses and sleigh bells and people singing carols and then warming up around a toasty fire sipping hot cocoa. Some of those memories live on right here at Balsam Ridge (minus the horses). Over the years many groups of folks have enjoyed a sense of community in these back woods no matter the season. Campfires, kids catching frogs, neighborhood campouts, snow picnics, hair-raising toboggan runs, family campouts, spiritual silent retreats, a take-your-breath-away giant swing, and some tales too daring to mention are all part of the fun. This is why we do what we do. We've been given much, and love to give back. It just wouldn't seem right to keep all this good to ourselves.

Located in the Eastern Upper Peninsula of Michigan in the small town of Engadine. We are a few miles from Lake Michigan with the camp nesting beside the tranquil waters of Doe Creek. There is wildlife traveling through the property and at times make this their home. This is a birding paradise for those birds migrating through and others building their nests and raising their babies here. Every spring is different those birds migrating, we see Indigo Bunting, Baltimore Oriole, Grosbeak and Bobolink. Occasionally we see just a flicker of color and wing and they are gone to another home. Actually nesting here are Hummingbirds, Cedar Waxwing and Sandhill Cranes, Every kind of Woodpecker is a daily sighting with the Pileated announcing his arrival that vibrates across the field and through the trees. We are a hobby farm, we hay in July, garden during the summer and at times have a variety of farm animals. There is recreation galore including swimming, fishing, boating, skiing, hiking, and biking to name a few very familiar activities to this area.

It's situated on 21 acres of what was the original Wawonowin Country Club, a 9-hole golf course that was built in the early 1800s and then closed in the mid 1960s. And now we have a beautiful mix of hardwoods and pines, forests and fields with multiplied non-motorized trails accessible right off the property. The very popular RAMBA bike trails are literally an ‘stones throw’ away! We had an absolutely amazing stay at this campsite! It is perfectly located just 10 minutes outside of town. You get the peace and quiet of nature without being far from Bayfield's shops and restaurants.The highlight of the camp was definitely the sandy beach. It provided the ultimate spot to relax during the day and catch stunning views. The entire campsite felt very private. We had plenty of space to stretch out and set up camp. It is truly the perfect place to camp and have fun with friends or family.Whether you want to build a campfire, swim, or just hang out with your favorite people, this spot has it all. Weekend Trip to Keweenaw Homestead Camping

This was our first trip to Michigan, and we couldn't have picked a better place to stay! The campsite was peaceful, private, and thoughtfully set up, with a nice mix of sun and shade, a picnic table, a fire ring (no grate), and beautiful sunset views. The potable water was convenient, and the outhouse was the cleanest we've ever used—it looked brand new! Evan was a wonderful host, greeting us when we arrived, showing us around the property, and then giving us complete privacy for the rest of our stay. We loved spotting fireflies, hawk moths, and chipmunks around camp, and the friendly dog was a sweet bonus. The site is also just about 10 minutes from town and close to a beautiful beach. We had such a wonderful long weekend and would highly recommend staying here!

Weekend Trip to Balsam Ridge Retreat

We stayed at “Danny’s Tent” site for 4th of July weekend and it was the perfect quick escape. I loved that it was chilly after midnight that we got to use the heater/stove in the tent, even though it hit the 80s during the day, and there was even a heated blanket option (stove was preferred). The tent had an outlet to charge your devices overnight and a fan for airflow, plus a solid and impressive outhouse with a handwashing spigot right outside and another one by the tent. There was tons of shade to stay cool during the day, and I liked that our tent was closest to the communal area where we played instruments, hung out by the pond, and tried all the different seating setups. The trails were super easy to navigate day and night, and the campfire area felt cozy with well-lit string lights overhead. The campground is close to plenty of stores in case you forget something, which makes it feel low-stress and beginner-friendly. Overall we had a great time and you can tell how much thought went into this private campground. You have to try the swings they built, both the “Screamer” and the “Dreamer.” It’s amazing how we felt like we were deep in a forest camping, but didn’t have to drive out as far as people typically do for the privacy and top tier space. Even though it was peak tick season, we didn’t see a single tick despite constantly checking our clothes, gear, and the inside of the tent. Balsam Ridge was a great time, tysm for having us!

Weekend Trip to Balsam Ridge Retreat

Linda and Chris are incredible hosts. You can see their heartfelt thought and intentions throughout the camp. The way the path lights up at night is absolutely magical and serene. There are multiple community areas to hang out at, and two swings that were the highlight of our family’s trip. We really appreciated the tour around the camp when we first got there so we knew where everything was. The Roost was so cozy and comfortable, with two walls lined with windows for a lot of natural light and a nice breeze, but blinds to pull down for privacy when needed. Also, Chris has great insight on all things to see and do near and around Duluth. We appreciated him answering our questions about a few places to check out. Thank you, Linda and Chris, for a wonderful stay and the amazing memories we made as a family.

Weekend Trip to Keweenaw Homestead Camping

Spectacular! Can't wait to return. Sites 1-3 are in a tent-only sanctuary by the water, a ~1 min walk from parking. In early July there were no annoying daytime bugs, minimal (for the UP) mosquitoes at night, and no biting flies! Upon arrival, Evan was quite welcoming, & after a brief tour we had that area of the property to ourselves. The new bathroom has fantastic views of the sunrise & smells only of fresh lumber. The location also makes for great day trips to Horseshoe Harbor, Bete Grise, Brunette Park, & other natural gems in the Keweenaw.

Weekend Trip to Shivering Timbers Family Campground

The stay was wonderful, very helpful on local activities! We stayed on site 10, which was a nice location. The only downside was there was little shade until late evening. Everything else was great! I really appreciated the family dropping the firewood off at the site while we played cards. Site was clean, and everyone respected the quiet hours! You could barely hear a single car driving at night. Loudest part (and a highlight for me) was listening to the wildlife talking throughout the evening. We will definitly be coming back to visit again in the fall hopefully!

It was nice that Andy stopped in and introduced himself, making himself available for any needs we might have. The area is close to Grand Marias and if going back we will spend more time in the area. We did go looking for the uv rocks on that beach with some success and made for a fun evening . I would have liked to have fished the area. I booked our camping trip late so we were limited on choices of campsites near the touristy areas. But it ended up being more centrally located to most sites we wanted to visit. If visiting Andy's I would recommend mosquito spray and infusers. Being July they were brutal. Not Andy's fault. Out houses are what they are but they were clean. And were cleaned while we were there. I would not recommend the shower that has been provided. We did instead buy an annual pass to the state parks and took showers there. That was the bomb. Hot clean showers near our daily events. Andy was communicative and helpful.

Such a gem! I’m so excited to have found this place! I plan to come back in the fall. And for another Fourth of July trip I will book in advance. Nice showers, store, and bathroom. I like the sites and locations. The golf carts are fun to rent.

Weekend Trip to Bugwayji Beach

I had a nice relaxing 4th of July weekend here. The campsite itself was nice but the highlight was the private beach. I spent most of my time there. Porcupine Mountains visitor center is about 10 minutes away for some great hiking.
