Melissahof - Mountain Farm Stay

1 site · RV, Tent35 acres · Lander, WY
This is no staid tour. You can throw in for any task of the day. There are twice daily pasture walks to move irrigation water when you may be chased by the resident pair of Sandhill cranes protecting their colt. The roosters will crow at sunrise. Esther Hobart Morris, the resident livestock guardian dog, will bark to prevent coyotes, foxes, etc. from dining on chicken. You will step in manure. Eggs are gathered from the rare, heritage breed laying hens twice daily. The mobile coops are rotated weekly to move the poultry to fresh pasture. Cattle are rotated every few days, too. Keep an eye to the sky to spot American kestrels, Northern harriers, Short-eared owls, and other raptors.  Melissahof is located five miles from Lander, Wyoming. A 15-year resident of Lander, Melissa knows the best eateries, mountain trails to suit your recreational pursuits, and town celebrations not to be missed. Melissa is five states away from her Bucket List goal to visit all 50 states. She worked for NOLS for eight years, and now operates Melissahof and leads a Local Food Economy project. She believes plants, animals, and people intersect within agriculture, which is determined by how we eat.

Jim Moss Arena Campground

24 sites · Lodging, RVs, Tents250 acres · Riverton, WY
JMA Campground is located about 15 minutes west of Riverton, Wyoming. Outstanding views of the Wind River Mountain Range and the Owl Creek Mountain Range. We do not have trees or green grass - bring your own shade. LOL We have 30 and 50 amp RV sites (each site has water) along with primitive tent sites. Amenities at the park include WiFi, fire pits, firewood, shower and restroom facilities, picnic areas, trash services and a RV dump station available for $10. Visitors can take advantage of the various outdoor activities such as basketball, hiking, biking and stargazing. Our campers enjoy our quiet solitude - we're not located along a busy noisy highway! Jim and I established our place in 1983. We produced team ropings and barrel racing jackpots for nearly 40 years - we no longer produce rodeo events (due to health). In 2017, we decided to share our property with campers - we have cherished each and every moment - we have made so many friends!  From the JMA Campground, it is 50 miles to Thermopolis (hot springs, whitewater rafting, fishing, buffalo, dinosaur museum, etc.); 60 miles to the National Military Museum in Dubois; 130 miles to the South Entrance of Grand Teton National Park; 45 miles to Lander; 70 miles to South Pass City - many other local attractions.

Camping near Lander guide

Overview

In the heart of Fremont County, Lander is a gateway to the rocky canyons and mountain views of the American West. Follow the Popo Agie River through Sinks Canyon State Park and admire the disappearing water formation, or head over to Boysen State Park to see early American engineering at Boysen Dam. Learn more about the area’s diverse local history at the Museum of the American West, then relax after a long day with a mineral soak in Hot Springs State Park. Stay near trailheads while tent camping inside state parks, or bring the comforts of home along to local RV parks with full hookups and riverside cabin rentals with beds and furniture. With sweeping views of Wind River Mountains, any type of camping near Lander is full of excitement and nature.

Where to go

Sinks Canyon State Park

Hike alongside Popo Agie River as it rushes over granite cliffs, through canyons, and disappears underground in a rare formation called “The Sinks.” Views of Wind River Mountains make Sinks Canyon State Park a popular camping destination, with primitive tent camping and some RV spots near hiking trailheads inside the park. All Wyoming state parks require a camping reservation; book early to score a waterfront campsite by Popo Agie River.

Boysen State Park

Admire Boysen Reservoir, walk along Boysen Dam, and pitch a tent at a waterfront campsite at year-round campgrounds in Boysen State Park. The park offers a variety of camping locations for tents and RVs that are near swimming areas, picnic tables, and a boat launch. Three primitive cabin rentals are also available near the river with wood furniture, bunk beds, and a fire pit. For a look into Boysen State Park history, explore the original Boysen Dam site, CB&O Railroad, and the retired power-plant historic areas.

Hot Springs State Park

Soak away your cares with a visit to Hot Springs State Park, where the BigHorn River creates natural mineral springs. The free bath house welcomes campers to relax in the 104°F water, while picnic spots, hiking, and bison viewing offer plenty of outdoor excitement. Though camping is not permitted inside the park, nearby private tent and RV campsites make it easy to enjoy a day trip to the hot springs.

When to go

Camping near Lander is most popular from June to August, when warm weather offers a comfortable environment for hiking, horseback riding, and splashing in lakes and rivers. Fall is slightly cooler and quieter, with colorful leaf displays, and winters are typically cold and snowy. Many campgrounds and RV parks near Lander are open year-round, though some may close in extreme weather conditions.
