The Big Pond is a 5-site campground on a 20-acre old farm in SW Virginia with a pond, a creek, rolling pastures, and a number of quaint buildings. We fell in love with the area, its people, the music, and the beautiful scenery a long time ago. We bought the Big Pond in 2021, with the idea to start a small campground catering to campers who share our love for nature, bicycling, mountain music, and a laid-back lifestyle (people drive the speed limit here!). This farm was developed in 1920, and had a small neighborhood store, and a number of structures such as a fish house, a spring house, and a big barn. We made the house livable, and are slowly reclaiming the other buildings. The pond is spring-fed, and also gets water from the Glade Creek, which borders the east side of the property. Our biggest surprise the first summer we owned the Big Pond was the huge variety of wild flowers and song birds. Our guests can walk the perimeter of the property, and enjoy the views from the highest point, the creek, the flowers, and the pond. If you want to make (acoustic) music, you can do so, and maybe we'll even join you in the gazebo at the pond!Enter through the gate on Breezy Ridge Rd, onto the designated camping area (see aerial). Do not go beyond the red stakes! Find a level spot to set up camp (self-contained RVs up to 23 ft. only), and enjoy a hike around our 20-acre property with a big pond, a creek along the eastern boundary, and lots of wildflowers. Hike to the highest point (on the SW corner), and enjoy the beautiful views from there while you catch your breathe. Pick your banjo (or any other instrument) in the gazebo at the edge of the pond, and enjoy the wild geese that will probably check you out. If you're into painting or photography, you will find many great subjects on and around our property. Ask your hosts about the many opportunities of bicycling and hiking in the area. Check out our great attractions such as the New River SP, the Blue Ridge Parkway, jam sessions, concerts, and music festivals in most towns in the area (Mt Airy, Galax, Floyd, Independence, Sparta, Elk Creek, Happy Valley, etc.), and enjoy a slower pace of life in a beautiful, rural area. Galax is a cute little town which hosts the largest, and oldest old-time and bluegrass festival in August, and is home to the Rex Theater (check out their website). There are also plenty of farmers markets, breweries, and distilleries in the area.
