Edge Of The Waters

2 sites ¡ RVs1 acre ¡ Port Bolivar, TX
NOTE for February through April / May: The canals are being dredged. This is much needed maintenance for the neighborhood but does present an inconvenience. The fishing areas are closed for the duration of the construction work. I also don't know when they will be working right behind us in a way that will maybe make it less than an ideal week. If I learn anything else I will update this. The Mabry boat ramp will be accessible the full time. Waterfront RV Port on Bolivar Peninsula. Has water, sewer, and electric with a new 20-30-50 amp panel. Covered RV spot with a screen porch. Property is fenced and dogs are welcome. The screened porch needs a bit more work but we ate there in the evenings without being swarmed by mosquitoes which is the way evenings at the coast do be. There is a dining table with chairs in the porch, and some patio chairs to use on the property. They are really great to sit on the dock! Also have a charcoal grill and a crab trap for you to use. (You need a fishing license and bait. Chicken bones works great!) Plenty of birding and fishing on the peninsula. Community fishing area is on the end of both Van Sant and Mabry, Mabry has a boat ramp. Beach Access via community gate at end of street. Combination for those will be shared in arrival instructions. Spot is a residential lot... It is 60 x 130. I know it says 1 acre but that is the smallest hipcamp will show. Two sides have other RV spots. One is a rental, the other is used by some pretty cool and quiet folks. The back side fronts on the water. You will probably see more seagulls and purple martins than people. We have weekly discounts. Message me and I can go over them because the Hipcamp platform makes them difficult. It works out to approximately 7 nights for the price of 5. Be prepared: Bolivar has mosquitoes. This is the coast. If it has rained they can be really bad. The county sprays on a regular rotation but it can be bad. They tend to swarm when you pull in. Spray helps. We also send recommendations for what sprays work best for us in the arrival instructions. We do not offer refunds for mosquitoes. We have never found them unmanageable, and the screen porch keeps them almost entirely away. We are east of Rollover Pass. Easiest to arrive through Winnie and south on 124. Unless you are coming from Galveston or southeast Houston it is probably shorter. The ferry is fun (dolphins and such) but the waits can be long. Also: Do not bring loose propane tanks or gasoline cans on the ferry, they will send you away. (Propane on RV is fine, but that is all they allow) https://www.txdot.gov/discover/ferry-boat-schedules/ferry-rules.html Regarding COVID and other health issues, you have exclusive use of the property so there should be no problems. We can't always come between to do any cleaning but there are no indoor spaces anyway.

Camping near Beaumont guide

Overview

With the Gulf Shore to the south and the Texas Pine Curtain to the north, Beaumont makes it easy to escape to nature. This southeast Texas city sits along the border of Louisiana, about halfway between Houston and Lake Charles. A mild climate means camping is possible throughout the year, giving campers access to kayaking, hiking, biking, and some of the best bird watching in the country.

Where to go

Gulf Coast

Sea Rim State Park, a popular destination for beach combing, paddling, horseback riding, and fishing, occupies 5.2 miles of Gulf shoreline an hour south of Beaumont, where you can pitch a tent in the sand, reserve an electric hook-up RV site or even kayak to a floating campsite. Further west on the Bolivar Peninsula, you can camp anywhere you’d like along the 27-mile-long Crystal Beach.

Piney Woods

Beaumont serves as the southern gateway to the Piney Woods region of East Texas. Camp at the edge of the Big Thicket in Village Creek State Park, just north of Beaumont, for recreation along one of the few free-flowing creeks in the Lone Star State. Head further north into Big Thicket National Preserve for a backcountry camping adventure only accessible by hiking or paddling.

Lake Livingston

Just under two hours northwest of Beaumont sits Lake Livingston, a reservoir in the East Texas Piney Woods popular for on-the-water recreation. Lake Livingston State Park at the southeast corner of the lake offers tent sites, full hook-up RV sites, and ADA-accessible screened shelters. Hike and bike along the lakeshore, or get out on the water for boating, kayaking, or fishing for white bass, catfish and perch.

When to go

Unless you’re camping near the cooling waters of the Gulf of Mexico, the best weather for pitching a tent and enjoying the great outdoors tends to fall from March to May or September to November. Summers can get hot and humid. Gulf currents tend to keep winter temperatures mild, but the region does experience an occasional freeze. Springtime is a favorite among birdwatchers along the Texas coast.

Know before you go

  • Alligators make their homes in the waterways in and around Beaumont, so remember to only swim in designated areas. If you do see an alligator, keep at least 30 feet away.
  • Remember to pack your rain gear, as Beaumont receives more rainfall than any other region in Texas.
  • Having your own transport is a must in much of Texas, including the Beaumont area.
  • Some areas of Big Thicket close to camping during hunting season, so be sure to check the calendar before your visit.
