Over the Creek

8 sites · RVs, Tents178 acres · Tarome, QLD
We have 178 acres of beautiful land hidden in the hills of Tarome in the Scenic Rim community. An amazing view of the national park and Cunninghams Gap. There is a hidden creek at the back of the property that never runs dry, running from Gap Creek Falls at the top of Cunninghams Gap. The location is perfect for a quick getaway or long stay, complete privacy and little reception depending on your phone service, ensuring a peaceful camping stay. There is lots of activities within a short drive from the property including fishing at Lake Moogerah, hiking the mountain tops or having brunch at the amazing local cafe's in the area. Our campsites are hidden in the hills, down by the creek or out in the open. You will need a 4 WD to access the rear of the property. There are 3 x 2WD camping options for caravans over 17ft or those not off road. Depending on the type of vehicle and van will dictate your camping locations. Maximum caravan access for the rear of the property is 17ft off road van. This is due to the hill climb and a tight corner at the top. Dogs are welcome but must stay within the camp, be under control or on a leash. If you have friends who you want to invite but don't have camping gear that's okay, we have the option to hire a camper trailer. All they need to bring is food and drinks. Only 1 available, please see Extras. We welcome self-contained campers who bring their own camping toilet/shower, and drinking water. All human, food and general waste is to be removed upon leaving the campsite. We have fireplaces set up but if you prefer a different site for your fire please bring your own fire pit. Good Firewood for camp ovens etc is available for purchase under Extras. For this one off price we will supply you for wood for your whole stay. There is sometimes wood located at each campsite but the amount and quality is varied. Check in and out times are flexibility but please arrange time prior to arrival

Serenity in the Scenic Rim

8 sites · RVs, Tents170 acres · Tarome, QLD
170 acres of paradise located in Tarome, just 8 minutes from Aratula and the Cunningham Highway. The campsite is best suited to those chasing a quiet, private area to enjoy the best of nature along with unbelievable mountain views. The property is the home base for a grass fed beef business with a sustainable focus so whilst you will share with some beautiful cows and calves, the secluded(and fenced off!) campsite is private and serene. Tarome offers some of the best views of the Main Range and Cunninghams Gap, all of which you can enjoy from the site. The sunsets here are spectacular. The Warrill Creek runs through the property, adjacent to the campsite and is home to an abundance of wildlife and vegetation all of which you are welcome to explore. The creek runs seasonally and makes a beautiful swimming area, but is just as enjoyable when dry allowing for a great path to explore the area. The site is only a short drive off the main road so the property offers an ideal spot for short stopovers, or alternatively use it as a base to explore the rest of the Scenic Rim. The abundance of walking, hiking, fishing or biking opportunities in the area are endless, or if you are more into relaxing into some food tasting and wineries then you’ve hit the jackpot. Just an hour and a half from Brisbane CBD! In lieu of camping with nature there are no amenities and limited service with some providers, but if you are chasing something in particular please let us know. We are happy to help. By staying with us you are helping a young family achieve our dream of running a sustainable, eco friendly food production business, we genuinely appreciate your support.

Gumridge

40 sites · RVs, Tents50 acres · Rathdowney, QLD
We have a 50 acre elevated bush block with space for approximately 80 people with tents, camper trailers or caravans. We have a range of different sites with two main camping areas and many smaller semi isolated spots. Caravans are best set up on the lower campground where the main view is, and we send noisier groups in tents or swags to our upper campground. If you want to be away from the main groups you can choose one of the quieter spots. There is a council maintained 2 km gravel road which provides access & most vehicles can make it here reliably in any weather. Please note that you are unlikely to make it up our road due to the lack of grip on the gravel if you have a front wheel drive vehicle with any significant sized trailer. Our campgrounds can also be very slippery if wet but dry out within a few hours. WE ASK OUR CAMPERS TO BRING A TOILET IF THEY'RE STAYING MORE THAN ONE NIGHT. We now sell bagged firewood for $20/ 20kg and fill LPG bottles, cash only. We're happy for campers to gather firewood from the bush around the campgrounds, bring your preferred method of cutting it. We are dog friendly but ask that campers keep their pets on a lead to stop them wandering onto adjacent properties or chasing our wildlife. The camping area has no amenities, however it shares a spectacular view south across the QLD/NSW border from 300 meters above sea level, with Mt. Maroon 6 km away. Also visible are Mt. Barney and Mt. Lindsay. The nearest toilets and showers are at Maroon Dam or Rathdowney, 15mins away. The local area has a tourism focus with plenty of opportunities to explore the Scenic Rim. Mt. Maroon and Mt. Barney offer walking trails to the top, Lake Moogera and Maroon Dam are not far away for jetskis, kayaking and swimming and we also have several eateries within 25 minutes. Scenic Rim website has more details. Dog friendly. We have an abundance of wildlife from Wedge Tailed Eagles to Bettongs and Koala. We also get some dangerous snakes and 2.5mt Lace Monitors (Goannas). I often have campers bring telescopes and big cameras to take advantage of the long range views and dark night sky. Kids are classed as age 10 and under. If aged 11 and over, please book at adult rate.

The best camping near Main Range National Park guide

Overview

About

Swathes of World Heritage-listed Gondwana Rainforest blanket the peaks of the Great Dividing Range in Main Range National Park. There are four sections of the park to explore—Cunninghams Gap, Spicers Gap, Queen Mary Falls, and Goomburra—along with a network of hiking trails. Climb up to mountain lookouts, trek to waterfalls, picnic amid the rainforest, or tackle the 110-kilometre Scenic Rim hike. Look out for wildlife and rare birds, including eastern bristle birds and the Coxen's fig-parrot along the way. Adventurous hikers will find it easy to venture off the beaten track, and remote bush camps offer a back-to-nature experience for self-sufficient campers.

Notable campgrounds

  • Best for caravans and motorhomes: Poplar Flat Camping Area is accessible for caravans and camper trailers, and has ample shady pitches within a short stroll of Dalrymple Creek. Bring your own wood for the wood-fired barbecue.
  • Best for wildlife watching: Spicers Gap camping area has grass pitches for tents and camper trailers, with easy access to the park’s walking trails. Keep a lookout for koalas, wallabies, and possums around the camp.
  • Best for experienced hikers: Laidley Creek Falls bush camp boasts a remote location along Laidley Creek. Getting there is all part of the experience—hike past the ‘Hole in the Wall’ and enjoy views of Mount Castle.

Tips for snagging a campsite

  1. Camping must be booked in advance, and you will need to pay the full fee upfront to secure your reservation.
  2. Camping permits are required for all the park’s campsites and a tag with your booking number must be displayed on your tent at all times.
  3. Book at least six weeks in advance if visiting in summer (December to February) or on bank holiday weekends.

When to go

The weather is notoriously changeable at Main Range, so come prepared whenever you visit. Summer (December through February) temperatures can reach up to 35°C, but nights are still cool enough to need warm clothes. Pack a raincoat if visiting between November and March too—thunderstorms are common at the end of a sunny day.

Know before you go

  • Main Range National Park is 116 kilometres m south of Brisbane, about a 1.5-hour drive along the Cunningham Highway. You can also enter the park at Queen Mary Falls in the south, along Spring Creek Road. Some campsites are accessible only by 4WD or on foot, so check access before booking.
  • All campsites have limited facilities and no power. Composting toilets and tap water (not potable, so bring plenty of drinking water or water purification tablets) are available. The closest gas stations and shops to the park are in Cunninghams Gap and Goomburra, so stock up on supplies before entering the park.
  • Ticks and leeches are common in the rainforest, so wear long trousers and use insect repellent.
  • There is a strict open-fire ban within the park—barbecues are provided at some picnic and camping areas. Generators are prohibited at all park camping grounds.
  • Some picnic areas and camping areas in Main Range National Park are wheelchair accessible, but there are no wheelchair-accessible trails.
