The best camping near Curtis Island National Park guide

Overview

About

Cruise out to Curtis Island or bring a 4WD on the ferry and set out to explore the national park. Hike along the island’s remote east coast, drive along bush trails and beaches in a 4WD, or cruise between sandy coves, where you can pitch your tent on secluded beaches at one of the island’s three campgrounds. Wildlife enthusiasts will be in their element. Look out for rare birds such as black-necked storks, rainbow lorikeet parrots, and Capricorn yellow chats; spot flatback turtles; or dive in to swim and snorkel in the protected marine park.

Notable campgrounds

  • Best for beachside camping: Joey Lees Camping Area has grass pitches along the beachfront for tents, 4WD camper trailers, and 4WD camper vans.
  • Best for wildlife sightings: Turtle Street has sand pitches and direct access to the beach—sea turtles can be seen nesting on the shores in season.
  • Best for escaping the crowds: Yellow Patch camping area has tent-only bush camping along the island's north-eastern tip. Arrive by private boat or on foot, and pitch your tent right by the sand.

Tips for snagging a campsite

  1. Camping permits are required for all the park’s campsites and must be reserved in advance. A tag with your booking number must be displayed on your tent at all times.
  2. Check access to campsites before booking—some camping areas are accessible on foot only, others are reachable only by 4WD or boat.

When to go

Curtis Island has a sub-tropical climate, and the average daytime temperature is 27°C year-round. The dry months of April through September are most popular for hiking and camping. October through March sees the rainiest weather, but it’s also the time to spot flatback turtles nesting and hatching along Turtle Beach.

Know before you go

  • Curtis Island National Park lies along the east coast of Curtis Island. Vehicle and passenger ferries run to the island from Gladstone, about a 90-minute drive from Rockhampton. Access to the national park and camping areas is by 4WD, boat, or hiking.
  • Curtis Island is remote, and there are no facilities, so bring everything you need with you, including drinking water. Campers need to be self-sufficient, and hikers are advised to pack emergency food, spare batteries, a personal locator beacon, and medical supplies. Fuel is only available on the mainland, but there is a general store in Southend on the island.
  • Mobile phone service is unreliable throughout the park, and carrying a satellite phone is also a good idea.
  • Open fires and generators are prohibited at all national park campsites—fuel or gas stoves for cooking are permitted.
  • There are no wheelchair-accessible trails or facilities in the park.
