Discover the most magical spots to pitch your tent or park your rig on your next Chillagoe-Mungana Caves National Park adventure.
From natural caves to Aboriginal rock art, this Queensland park’s wonders lie underground.
Rocky outcrops of limestone and grassy woodlands blanket Chillagoe-Mungana Caves National Park, but the real wonders lie underground. Venture into the Donna, Trezkinn, and Royal Arch caves on a ranger-guided tour, learn about the region’s industrial heritage at the Chillagoe Smelters site, or head out on a short walk to see ancient Aboriginal rock art sites. Adventurous travellers can also explore the Archways, Pompeii, and Bauhinia caves without a guide—watch out for bats swooping overhead and rock-wallabies and scampering over the rocks. Camping is not permitted in the national park, but there are options for campers in Chillagoe town.
Cave tours run daily (except Christmas day) year-round, and underground temperatures maintain a steady 22°C, so there’s no best time to visit. However, access to the park can be limited during the wet season (December through March). A 4WD is recommended if visiting at this time, and roads can sometimes be closed, so check ahead.
