The best camping near Chillagoe-Mungana Caves National Park guide

Overview

About

Rocky outcrops of limestone and grassy woodlands blanket Chillagoe-Mungana Caves National Park, but the real wonders lie underground. Venture into the Donna, Trezkinn, and Royal Arch caves on a ranger-guided tour, learn about the region’s industrial heritage at the Chillagoe Smelters site, or head out on a short walk to see ancient Aboriginal rock art sites. Adventurous travellers can also explore the Archways, Pompeii, and Bauhinia caves without a guide—watch out for bats swooping overhead and rock-wallabies and scampering over the rocks. Camping is not permitted in the national park, but there are options for campers in Chillagoe town.

When to go

Cave tours run daily (except Christmas day) year-round, and underground temperatures maintain a steady 22°C, so there’s no best time to visit. However, access to the park can be limited during the wet season (December through March). A 4WD is recommended if visiting at this time, and roads can sometimes be closed, so check ahead.

Know before you go

  • Chillagoe-Mungana Caves National Park is located in North Queensland, 215km west of Cairns, or about a 3-hour drive. Car parking is available at Donna Cave, Royal Arch Cave, and Balancing Rock.
  • Facilities are limited within the park, so bring everything you need with you. Chillagoe town has a small supermarket where you can pick up picnic supplies.
  • Sturdy, closed-toe shoes and protective clothing is advised for exploring the caves as the limestone rocks can be sharp and slippery. Bring a torch (and spare batteries) if you plan on a self-guided visit.
  • The caves are not accessible, and there are no wheelchair-accessible facilities in the national park.
