Camping near Métis-sur-Mer guide

Overview

Boasting a population of fewer than 600 residents, Métis-sur-Mer offers plenty of reasons to make a stop on your Gaspé Peninsula trip. In addition to the expected cafes, restaurants, and grocery stores for stocking up on essentials, the city's sand-and-pebble swimming beach and Route MacNider covered bridge are top spots in town. Métis-sur-Mer is known its many architecturally significant buildings, including the 1909 Pointe-Mitis Lighthouse, which is set near an array of brightly painted coastal homes. The waterfront and area hiking trails are busy in summer (as are the handful of national parks set within a few hours' drive), while winter skiing and snow activities reign supreme in the winter months.

When to go

Though the Gaspé Peninsula is a year-round destination that offers myriad adventures once cold weather comes, many Métis-sur-Mer facilties aimed at tourists shut down outside of the primary June to October season. The town's many charms can make it very busy between mid-July and late August, so it may be best to visit outside of these crowded months if you're looking for a quieter trip.

Know before you go

  • Métis-sur-Mer has an electric vehicle charging station as well as free wifi at its seaside rest area.
  • The entire Gaspé Peninsula is very difficult to explore without a car, so you’re advised to rent one in a bigger community before heading to Métis-sur-Mer.
  • Quebec is Canada's French-speaking province, and in many parts of the Gaspesie region, locals are not fluent in English. Métis-sur-Mer, however, prides itself on being a bilingual community, housing the region's only bilingual library. Even still, it won’t hurt to have a translation app on your phone if you don’t speak any French.
