The name Batchewana is derived from the Ojibwe word “Badjiwanung” meaning “water that boils up” describing the turbulent waters in the narrow passage between Sand Point and Batchewana Island. Batchewana bay was an important fishing place for the Ojibwa and later for the Hudson Bay Company, which maintained an outpost and fishing station where Batchewana River enters the bay.

The lighthouse was constructed in 1873 of wood and was frequently struck by lightning.in June 1931 a lightening strike burned the original lighthouse to the ground. The lighthouse had keepers until 1955 when the hand operated fog-horn was discontinued. The lighthouse was discontinued in 1962.

What’s Available for water enthusiasts to enjoy you ask? Bring your own toys or Rent from Us. Paddle Boats are free to use for a limited time with a deposit. Lake Superior fishing, hiking, boating, kayaks, canoes, swimming trail blazing.

For the more chill guests: sunbathing, forest bathing, bird spotting, photography. Art lessons with local native Shaw TV guest, Crissy Burby!
