Re-use, Re-purpose, Up-cycle... We are committed to making great treasures from one man's trash! Our sites have tables and chairs created from old tires. We are re-using old pallets to create tent platforms, benches and signs. Our little campground is primitive, but we are a work in progress, with amenities coming in the future.
Property butts up against a large BLM area, with plenty of room to take a walk in the buff. We have an above ground pool if you would prefer to relax and skinny dip. Or if you're preferring to sight see, there are numerous places to go around our area.
In New Mexico, in 45 minutes or less you can be at one of the following: Navajo Lake State Park, Aztec Ruins, Glade Run Recreational area, Jackson Lake Wildlife Refuge, Farmington Lake Recreational area. San Juan Quality Waters in the San Juan River offers world class fishing. The Animas River offers fun river floats. Chaco Canyon National Park is only 2 hours away.
In Colorado, we are about an hour from these attractions: Mesa Verde National Park, McPhee Reservoir, Canyon of the Ancients, Lake Nighthorse Day Use Recreation area, Chimney Rock and Purgatory Ski Resort. La Plata Canyon has great mountain hiking and is only 30 minutes away.

Paddleboarding and windsurfing on Lake Nighthorse. Lots of mountain bike trails near Durango and good road biking on our CR 213. Canyon hiking direct from the ranch. We are a perfectly located vacation campground on 40 acres with amenities and wide-open spaces. Amenities include hot showers, an equipped community kitchen, a pavilion with hammocks, tables, ping pong, etc. Enjoy complimentary coffee, eggs, filtered drinking water and more.
Bright Star Campground is located in the Great Sage Plain in the shadow of Mesa Verde National Park with panoramic mountain/mesa views of the Four Corners region, all only 5 miles southeast of Cortez.
We are in an arid desert climate. Water is scarce, stored in cisterns for use in camp. Because of this we ask that you be conservative with water use in camp.
We are a cannabis-friendly destination but ask that Cannabis use stay at your campsite, cabin or tipi.
There are many things to do/see nearby: Mesa Verde National Park, Canyons of the Ancients, Hovenweep National Monument and Phil's World Mountain Biking. Raft down the Dolores river, maybe rent a SUP or kayak and chill on a quiet reservoir. There are museums and cultural centers in the area as well.
Durango is 45 min, Telluride is 1.5 hrs away, and Moab is about 2.5 hours away-including Arches and Canyonlands National parks.
The best/nearest airport is in Durango. Cortez has Denver Air (Key Lime Air) with connections to Denver and Phoenix. The nearest large international airport is in Salt Lake City or Albuquerque.

From U.S. Highway 550 (north of Nageezi), follow the signs that say Chaco Canyon National Monument Park (County Road 7900). From County Road 7900 and County Road 7950 (turn right on 7950). After 3 miles, at the end of pavement, you will see a sign that says "Dry Camp", with a long dirt driveway. Our campground is 13 miles before the hazardous road to Chaco Canyon. We like to say the we are "The Gateway to Chaco Canyon". Save the wear and tear on your trailers, camp with us! Horse-Thief Campground is an upcoming camp; located on 5 acres of land and more, for campers to enjoy. In a quiet; serene, beautiful landscape area of the Dine Nation. With beautiful sunrise; sunsets and night sky is out of this world. There are trails in which visitors may walk or bike, as well as a Look Out Point. Horse-Thief is currently a Dry Camp with no Electricity or running water however generators are welcome. There is one portable restroom. We look forward to Meeting and Greeting you! Overview
In the heart of Four Corners country (where Colorado, Utah, Arizona, and New Mexico touch), Farmington sits on the Colorado plateau at the juncture of three rivers. Especially important to many Native Americans are the state park lands near Farmington that offer opportunities to experience unique cultural artifacts and monuments in addition to the wild flora and fauna. From old-fashioned homesteads to riverside oases, this open land features tent camping, RV camping, and access to boat-in camping and high-speed watersports.
Where to go
Navajo Lake State Park
Along the northern reaches of the San Juan River, Navajo Lake is the second largest lake in New Mexico. This is a paradise for boaters who can hit the waves on personal watercraft for sailing, water skiing, canoeing, and kayaking. An annual camping pass (valid for all New Mexico state parks) gives campers access to marinas and docks for boat-in beach camping, RV sites with electrical hookups and dump stations, group campsites, and a playground for the kiddos. Rent boats at the visitor’s center and purchase guides for San Juan river fly fishing. At sunset, wind down with a leisurely trek along the riverside trail.
Mesa Verde National Park
To the north sits Mesa Verde National Park, a once-thriving community of ancestral Pueblo peoples and current World Heritage Site. Morefield Campground, Mesa Verde’s only campground, has sites with full hookups for RVs, including water, electric, and sewer, as well as dry tent sites—find fire pits, barbecue grills, and picnic tables at each. Snag an annual pass to experience the mysteriously abandoned ancient city dwellings, hike over 30 miles of trails, or observe mule deer, whiptail lizards, and colorful tanagers in their natural habitat. Mesa Verde is an International Dark Sky park, which means campers sleeping under the stars are in for an incredible cosmic view.
Lake Farmington
Lake Farmington features beachside experiences within city limits, where tent campers and RVers can enjoy year-round camping using a season pass. Each site is equipped with a fire ring, barbecue grill, and picnic table. Go swimming, grab a fishing license for from-shore fishing and night fishing, launch a motorless boat beginning in April, hike the shoreline, or rent pedal boats from Floatsome & Jetsome, a local adventure company.
When to go
Farmington is most enjoyable during warmer months, even though spring is the busiest tourism time for the area. The warmer summer temperatures see campers flocking to the area for watersports and camping experiences in a diverse ecological region. The autumn months feature very comfortable temperatures between 50°F and 88°F, with inclement weather and crowds kept to a minimum.
