We moved to Draco Hill in 2010 and built a 5-star-plus Energy Star home overlooking the Cedar River. We then got to work restoring the soil that had been eroded by industrial farming and tending to the overgrazed timber. We planted 27 acres of prairie, discovered native prairie on a hill top (less than 1/10 of 1 percent of Iowa still retains its original prairie), planted nearly 15 acres of trees and then started an orchard with heartnuts, chestnuts, honeyberries and pears. Ayshe went off to college and then to live her dream in Japan and Suzan and Paul enjoy sharing this land, their organic gardens and other natural challenges with WWOOFers, AirBnB guests and now HipCampers!
