In May 2018, the Earth split apart and lava began oozing into Leilani Estates subdivision. Everyone in the area was immediately evacuated, as weeks went by a total of 24 fissures opened up. The lava from those fissures was trapped magma from 1960. As pressure was building underground, Fissure 8 exploded as the Kilauea cauldera began to drain through it causing 200-300 foot fountains of lava over the next 4 months. The explosion pumped 1800-2600 gallons of lava per second out the front and down to the ocean, destroying everything in its path. Over 800 homes, hundreds of acres of forest, popular attractions like the famous Green Lake and Kapoho tidepools were covered. Pele (the fire goddess in Hawaiian history) devastated some and spared others. Her path skimmed the backyard, leaving a nice shelf of pahoehoe (smooth) lava for us to enjoy. I feel lucky to be blessed in this time and space of such an amazing event, I'm happy to share it with those who respect and appreciate the beauty of a new day, rising up from the destruction of what was, to what is. Always steaming vents give amazing sunrises, on clear nights the skies are full of stars on a Mars like terrain. Truly unique in nature, each of the 3 sites offers a different experience. Learn more about this land: Pitch a tent under a covered, 12 foot high roof, surrounded by brush and trees, or directly on the flow from 2018. The lava flow provides an unobstructed, panoramic view of F24 and F8, unreal sunrises and neverending steaming vents.  Site 3 is where the treeline meets the flow, so you are able to connect a canopy for rain shelter.   Site 2 is on the sofa tephra that floated from the 300 foot lava fountain, bushes and trees. The closest to the house,  Site 1 is under a 12 foot high tin roof, and on dirt surrounded by grassy lawn.   This is also a picnic area, with microwave, plug in power, and freezer. (This area can be used in daytime hours by other campers, if you're more comfortable there is uncovered grassy space that's more private)F8 is viewable from all sites, and accessible from other areas of Leilani. This area rains almost everyday at least a little, be it summer or Hawaiian winter! This site is recommended if you don't have a canopy or tarp.   Pahoatown, grocery store, pizza and restaurants, food delivery options and 24 hour 7-11 are available 8 minutes from campsite. Hot ponds, Lava Tree State Park, Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, Kehena Black Sand Beach, Kalapana, hikes and caves are all within 30 minutes. Green Sand Beach and South Point are approx. 2.5 hours, Mauna Kea Mauna Loa 1.5 hrs., Hilo (wal-mart, shopping, dining, etc) is 20 minutes, Keaukaha ( numerous beach parks, ocean ponds and swimmable tidepools about 35 minutes) and Kona 2.5 hours.  3 bedroom 2 bath modern house available for Restroom and hot showers,Pitch a tent under a covered, 12 foot high roof, surrounded by brush and trees, or directly on the flow from 2018. Black Lava Camp 'n' Coffee
My 4 year old daughter and I had a great stay at Melissa’s place. Our camp space was covered, there were multiple spots to sit and picnic, and Melissa was incredibly hospitable. The trail to Fissure 8 was a thrill for both my daughter and I. We are grateful to Melissa for having us and would totally recommend checking her place out.

Black Lava Camp 'n' Coffee
This site was very basic, just a backyard to park/camp in but Melissa was awesome, friendly & very accommodating during our stay. Was super cool to be so close to fissure 8 & explore the Pahoa area.

Black Lava Camp 'n' Coffee
Nice view, messy garden
We stayed 1 night at this place. This area next to the lava flow is increadible- for those who have not seen it before. Also the owner was friendly. But the house & the garden were sadly full of trash. Plastic bottles. Broken little garden house...:( The next morning we couldnt even use a bathroom (which was in the house)..because the owner was not around. Well, so sorry, but I would definately not recommend staying here. It does not look like a place where you wanna spent your holidays
