Felt Unsafe and Misled as a Solo Fe

I rarely leave negative reviews, but I feel it’s important to share this for other solo travelers, especially women with dogs.
I booked two nights and left after one. On arrival around 6pm, several dogs immediately swarmed my car; my normally confident dog wouldn’t get out and the host’s dogs repeatedly snapped at her. The yurt door had no real latch, just a makeshift setup, so as a woman alone I did not feel secure.
The listing mentions an aquaponics farm and kitchen, but what I saw felt very improvised and unstable. I ended up not cooking because the kitchen platform didn’t feel safe or clean.
Nighttime bathroom and safety were the biggest issues. When I asked what to do at night, I was told to “use the trees,” and the host casually mentioned a dog dying near the yurt in a fight with a mountain lion. That, combined with no secure bathroom and no real door lock, made me very anxious.
I was also told that only guests staying 3+ nights can shower to “save water,” and heard an unsettling story about the host turning off the hot water mid-shower on a previous guest. The next morning, after hearing me step out around 5am, he came and knocked on my door at 6am to “say hi,” which felt intrusive rather than welcoming.
I decided not to stay the second night and headed back to the Bay. I’m comfortable with rustic, off-grid stays, but this felt unsafe and very different from what was advertised. I would not recommend this for solo women or anyone traveling with a dog.

Staying at Hoppers was truly an unforgettable experience. When we went there were 11 of sweetest puppies, and 4 dare I say sweeter doggy parents and grandparents. (They were all equally sweet)
Hopper was accommodating to us and such a thoughtful host. The yurt was very cozy and beautifully deisgned. His approach to sustainability is novel and special.
As someone who loves to camp in Joshua Tree, Sequoia and Kings Canyon, the area was the was the darkest night sky I’ve seen in a long long time. If you want more comfort than camping at salt point, but still be immersed in the north coast nature this is the place to be.

Hopper's farm was a super fun spot to stay for a weekend with my dog and toddler. The yurt had everything we needed and the detached bathroom with shower and a couple sinks was just a short walk away. His farm is in a beautiful forest about a 20 min drive uphill from sea ranch, so it is a great alternative to Salt Point SP or the other campgrounds closer to Gualala. My daughter enjoyed seeing his rabbits. Hopper is a fountain of wisdom about local plants and agriculture and I'm sure a longer stay would be super interesting, but we mainly used it as a home base for local adventures along the coast. Also if you're coming up from the bay the drive from 101 through dry creek valley is gorgeous and passes through loads of wineries/farms with cool farm stands and other neat things to stop and see if you have more time. Bottom line, it's a really nice, peaceful spot and we hope to return again soon for a longer stay.

I recently had the pleasure of staying at this incredible off-grid Hipcamp spot, and it was nothing short of magical! Thomas was not only friendly but also passionate about sharing his knowledge of the land, making every interaction meaningful and enriching.
One of the highlights of my stay was enjoying morning and night tea while soaking in the breathtaking surroundings. The peaceful ambiance allowed for serene moments of reflection and connection with nature. I also had the joy of meeting the best dogs on the property, who were always ready for some love and mostly at work, being guard dogs!
The swings on the property had a whimsical charm, adding a sense of joy and life to the experience. I felt a wonderful sense of solitude in this beautiful setting, which allowed me to truly unwind and recharge.
And let’s not forget the wild strawberries—hands down the best I’ve ever tasted! They were a delightful treat that perfectly complemented my stay.
I also indulged in a healing massage that left me feeling rejuvenated and at peace. The yurt itself was wonderfully equipped with everything I needed, blending comfort with the beauty of nature.
If you're looking for an unforgettable escape filled with learning, relaxation, and genuine interactions, this is the place to be! I can’t recommend it enough and can’t wait to return!

From the moment we pulled in, we knew we were somewhere special. Thomas went above and beyond to make sure everything was perfect for our stay — and it honestly felt like visiting an old friend rather than just a host. He had a tent already set up for us, with a table, a couch and a tarp.
His land is beautiful and peaceful — it just has this calm energy to it. We felt super safe and relaxed the whole time. Our dog was in heaven, running around freely with Thomas’s dogs. They got along great, and it was so nice to be somewhere truly dog-friendly.
The next morning, Thomas gave us a little tour of the place, including his hydroponic garden. I don’t think I’ll ever look at store-bought arugula the same way again — it was insanely good. The eggs were also super fresh and delicious, and he even offers customized baskets with produce from his farm. It’s such a cool, personal touch that makes the stay even more unique.
Also — can’t forget to mention the swing. It was such a fun surprise and made us feel like kids again.
This place is the definition of good vibes. Genuine host, beautiful land, and thoughtful touches everywhere. We’re already talking about when we can come back.

This was a very unique, eclectic Hip Camp experience. It was a little less peaceful than I was expecting, given the abundance of roosters, dogs, and other people around. The arrival instructions were also out of date (it referenced a combination code lock that has since been replaced by a keyed lock). However, Hopper was a generous and friendly host, and the amenities were exactly what we were expecting (fully stocked shared kitchen, flushing toilet, etc.). I would recommend this Hip Camp for people who are interested in having a getaway with some (hopefully delightful) surprise and perhaps chaos, and not so much for people looking for a more energetically simple or private getaway. Important to note is that for every person over 2 at the yurt, there’s an additional $55 charge that’s not mentioned in the original hip camp listing. This location is also a little out of the way—so be prepared to drive some rocky dirt roads and to bring your own groceries, and I would definitely not arrive after dark (it would be very easy to get lost and on the wrong property).
One of my friends who went with me on this trip had this to add: “I almost didn’t want us to write a review because of how amazing it was. We wanted to keep this hipcamp to ourselves as our own little gem. But alas, if it’s calling to you, we want you to discover this special place too”

If you’re looking for a lil’ off-grid slice of paradise and a fascinating experience, this is it. (Although the cell service was actually great at Hopper’s place). His property is beautiful and unique, the Yurt was cozy and the beds were comfy AF, nice n’ clean. All around the views and vibes were just pretty solid here. Grateful we had the opportunity to spend a weekend here and get a taste of what it’s like to truly live amongst and be one with nature. Not to mention Hopper is an awesome dude, doing awesome things. This was a good weekend.

Wow. 5 stars. Ian was an absolutely exceptional host. He set up camp a camp spot for us with a tent, a table, a couch, and a tarp even though we booked last minute. He even left a sign out and Christmas lights so that we could find our spot since we were arriving in the dark. His property was beautiful and felt very safe. We let the dogs run around off-leash because they got along with his amazing pups and they had the time of their lives. In the morning he showed us the property and his hydroponic farm he is starting and I have never tasted arugula that good ever. Like I didn’t even know arugula was supposed to taste like that. The shit we are buying in the stores must not even be arugula at all lol and the eggs he had were amazing. I don’t even remember what else he let us try because I was so in awe of it and the best is that you can get a personalized basket at the property. This place is exactly the vibe of what Hip Camp is all about. Oh and had a super fun swing to swing on too.

This place is like a fairytale. The yurts are designed so seemlessly to accommodate your stay. Hopper (the host) is such an awesome guy with so much knowledge about basically everything earth and beyond. He can chat about the local plants, sustainable living, the area, and much much more. Well worth the “trip”.

We loved our stay on the farm! The setting is beautiful and peaceful. It is secluded enough to feel away from it all but convenient to the coast, groceries, trails, gas, wineries and restaurants.
We were warmly welcomed upon arrival by everyone at the farm and the experience is as communal and social as you choose. We enjoyed meeting the host, staff and guests on the farm and socializing with them in the common areas. However, when we wanted to have some alone time it was well respected. Our dogs were welcome and were allowed to wander around and interact with the host's and other guest's dogs.
The fresh eggs and produce were delicious and a must try!
The yurt was cozy, comfortable, and clean and the bathroom was nearby and nicely stocked and furnished. We enjoyed wandering the area and getting a tour of the working farm.
We can't wait to return and again enjoy all the offerings.
